1Entonces los reyes y los príncipes de todas las ciudades y provincias, es a saber, de la Siria de Mesopotamia y de la Siria de Sobal, de Libia y de Cilicia, enviaron sus embajadores, que se presentaron a Holofernes y le dijeron: Then the kings as well as the princes of the provinces sent their emissaries from all of the cities: from Syria, particularly Mesopotamia, and Syria Sobal, and Libya as well as Cilicia. These, upon coming to Holofernes, said:2“Cese tu indignación para con nosotros, porque vale más vivir sirviendo al gran rey Nabucodonosor y someternos a ti, que morir y con nuestra ruina sufrir los males de nuestra esclavitud. “Let your indignation concerning us cease. For it is better for us to live in service to Nebuchadnezzar, the great king, and to become subject to you, rather than to die, even though we may have to suffer our condemnation into the annihilation of slavery.3Todas nuestras ciudades, todas nuestras posesiones, todos nuestros montes y collados, los campos, las vacadas, los rebaños de ovejas, cabras, caballos y camellos, todas nuestras facultades y nuestras familias están a tu disposición. All our cities and all our possessions, all mountains, and hills, and fields, and herds of cattle, and flocks of sheep, and goats, and horses, and camels, and all our resources and families are in your sight.4Quede a tu arbitrio todo lo que poseemos. Let all that we have be subject to your law.5Nosotros y nuestros hijos somos tus siervos. We, and our sons, are your servants.6Ven a nosotros como señor pacífico y empléanos en tu servicio como gustares.” Come to us as a peaceful lord, and use our service, just as it pleases you.”7Entonces bajó de las montañas con la caballería y su ejército numeroso, y se apoderó de todas las ciudades y de todos los pueblos del país. Then he descended from the mountains with horsemen, in great power, and he took charge of every city and of every inhabitant of the land.8De todas las ciudades enroló como tropas auxiliares a los hombres robustos y escogidos para la guerra. And, from all the cities, he took for himself auxiliaries: strong men and well-chosen for war.9Fue tan grande el espanto que se apoderó de aquellas provincias, que los habitantes de todas las ciudades, tanto los príncipes y distinguidos, como el pueblo, a su llegada le salían al encuentro, And such a dread lay upon those provinces, that the leading and honored inhabitants of all the cities, together with the people, went out to meet him at his arrival.10recibiéndolo con coronas y antorchas encendidas y formando danzas al son de tamboriles y flautas. They received him with garlands and lamps; they were led by choirs with timbrels and flutes.11Pero aun haciendo todo esto no pudieron mitigar la ferocidad de aquel corazón. Yet, not even by doing these things were they able to mitigate the ferocity of his chest.12Porque siguió destruyendo sus ciudades y talando sus árboles sagrados, For he both destroyed their cities and cut down their sacred groves.13por cuanto el rey Nabucodonosor le había dado orden de exterminar todos los dioses de la tierra, para que él solo fuese llamado dios por aquellas naciones que el poder de Holofernes pudiese subyugarle. For king Nebuchadnezzar had instructed him to exterminate all the gods of the earth, evidently so that he alone might be called ‘god’ by those nations which were able to be subjugated by the power of Holofernes.14Habiendo atravesado la Siria de Sobal, toda la Apamea y toda la Mesopotamia, llegó a los idumeos, al país de Gabaá, But when he had passed through Syria Sobal, and all of Apamea, and all Mesopotamia, he came to the Idumeans in the land of Gibeah.15tomó sus ciudades y se detuvo allí por espacio de treinta días, durante los cuales mandó que se reuniese toda la fuerza de su ejército. And he took their cities, and he sat there for thirty days, during which days he instructed all the troops of his army to regroup.
