1Holofernes, jefe del ejército asirio, recibió la noticia de que los hijos de; Israel se preparaban para resistirle y que tenían cerrados los pasos de los montes. And it was reported to Holofernes, the leader of the military of the Assyrians, that the sons of Israel were preparing themselves to resist, and also that they had closed the mountain passes.2Entonces, montando en cólera, e irritándose sobremanera, hizo venir a todos los príncipes de Moab, y a los capitanes de los ammonitas, And he was enraged with extreme fury and great indignation, and he called together all the leaders of Moab and the leaders of Ammon.3y les habló de esta manera: “Decidme ¿Qué pueblo es ese que ocupa los montes, qué ciudades son las suyas, cuáles y cuan grandes; cuál es su poder, cuánta su gente, y quién es el jefe de sus tropas? And he said to them: “Tell me who this people may be, who obstruct the mountains. And which are their cities, and of what kind, and how many? And then, what may be their power, and what may be their number, and who is king over their military?4¿Por qué estos, entre todos los que moran en el oriente, nos han menospreciado y no han venido a nuestro encuentro para recibirnos como amigos?” And why have these, more than all who dwell in the east, shown contempt for us, and have not gone out to meet us, so that they might receive us with peace?”5Entonces Aquior, jefe de todos los ammonitas, le respondió y dijo: “Si te dignas escucharme, diré, señor mío, en tu presencia la verdad acerca de ese pueblo que habita en las montañas, y no saldrá de mi boca palabra falsa, Then Achior, commander of all the sons of Ammon, responding, said: “If you would deign to listen, my lord, I will tell the truth in your sight about this people, who dwell in the mountains, and not a false word will go forth from my mouth.6Ese pueblo es del linaje de los caldeos. This people is from the progeny of the Chaldeans.7Habitó primeramente en Mesopotamia, pues no quisieron seguir los dioses de sus padres, que vivían en el país de los caldeos. These dwelt at first in Mesopotamia, because they were not willing to follow the gods of their fathers, who were in the land of the Chaldeans.8Abandonando las ceremonias de sus padres, que rendían culto a muchos dioses, And so, forsaking the ceremonies of their fathers, which were with a multitude of gods,9adoraron al solo Dios del cielo, el cual les mandó salir de allí y pasar a vivir en Canaán. Mas cuando una gran hambre invadió todo aquel país, bajaron a Egipto, donde por espacio de cuatrocientos años se multiplicaron hasta hacerse incontable su número. they worshipped one God of heaven, who also instructed them to go forth from that place and to dwell in Canaan. And when a famine covered the whole land, they went down into Egypt, and there, through four hundred years, they were so multiplied, that the army of them could not be numbered.10Tratados con dureza por el Rey de Egipto y forzados a edificar ciudades con barro y ladrillos, clamaron a su Señor, el cual hirió a toda la tierra de Egipto con varias plagas. And when the king of Egypt oppressed them, and also subjugated them to labor with clay and brick in the building of his cities, they cried out to their Lord, and he struck the entire land of Egypt with various plagues.11Entonces los egipcios los arrojaron de sí. Pero cuando cesaron las plagas, quisieron de nuevo cautivarlos y reducirlos a la anterior servidumbre. And when the Egyptians had cast them away from them, and the plague had ceased from them, and they were willing to seize them again and recall them to their servitude:12Mas ellos huyeron, y el Dios del cielo les abrió el mar; de tal manera que de un lado y otro las aguas formaron una masa sólida como un muro; y así caminando a pie enjuto, atravesaron el fondo del mar. the God of heaven opened the sea to these as they fled, so that the waters were made to stand firm like a wall on either side, and these walked across the bottom of the sea and passed through with dry feet.13Un ejército innumerable de egipcios que los perseguía por el mismo paso, fue de tal suerte cubierto de las aguas, que ni uno siquiera quedó para contar el suceso a la posteridad. In that place, when an innumerable army of the Egyptians pursued after them, they were so overwhelmed with the waters, that not even one remained to report to posterity what had happened.14Salidos del Mar Rojo ocuparon los desiertos del monte Sinaí, donde jamás hombre alguno pudo habitar, ni descansar persona alguna. In truth, going forth from the Red Sea, they occupied the deserts of mount Sinai, in which man could never dwell, nor a son of man take rest.15Allí las fuentes amargas se les convirtieron en dulces, a fin de que pudiesen beber, y por espacio de cuarenta años recibieron el manjar del cielo. In that place, bitter fountains became sweet for them to drink, and, through forty years, they continued to receive provisions from heaven.16Dondequiera que llegaron, sin arco ni saeta, sin escudo ni espada, peleó por ellos su Dios y salió vencedor. And, although they had entered without bow and arrow, and without shield and sword, their God fought on their behalf and was victorious.17No hubo jamás quien pudiese hacer daño a este pueblo, mientras no se apartó del culto del Señor su Dios. And there was no one who could attack this people, except when they withdrew from the worship of the Lord their God.18Pero siempre que, fuera de su Dios, adoraron a otro, fueron entregados al saqueo, a la espada y al oprobio. But as often as they worshipped any other, except their own God, they were delivered to plunder, and to the sword, and into reproach.19En cambio, cuando se arrepintieron de haber abandonado el culto de su Dios, el Dios del cielo les dio fuerzas para resistir. But as often as they were repentant for having withdrawn from the worship of their God, the God of heaven gave them the power to resist.20Así que al fin abatieron a los reyes cananeos, jebuseos, fereceos, heteos, heveos, amorreos y a todos los potentados de Hesebón, de cuyas tierras y ciudades tomaron posesión. And, indeed, they overthrew the king of the Canaanites, and of the Jebusites, and of the Perizzites, and of the Hethites, and of the Hevites, and of the Amorrhites, and all the powerful ones in Hesebon, and these same possessed their lands and their cities.21Mientras no pecaron contra su Dios, les fue bien, porque su Dios aborrece la iniquidad. And, as long as they did not sin in the sight of their God, it was well with them. For their God hates iniquity.22Pocos años hace, se desviaron del camino que Dios les había señalado para que anduviesen por él, y fueron destruidos en batallas por muchas naciones y llevados cautivos muchísimos de ellos a tierra extraña And even some years ago, when they had withdrawn from the way that their God had given them to walk, they were destroyed in battles by many nations and very many of them were led away captive into a land not their own.23Mas habiéndose convertido poco ha al Señor, su Dios, se han reunido de nuevo (volviendo) de los lugares en que habían sido esparcidos, han repoblado todas estas montañas y poseen nuevamente a Jerusalén, donde está su santuario. But, more recently, returning to the Lord their God, from the dispersion in which they had been scattered, they have united and have ascended into all these mountains, and they again possess Jerusalem, where their holy things are.24Ahora, pues, infórmate, oh señor mío, si ellos son reos de algún delito delante de su Dios. (De ser así) marcharemos contra ellos, porque indudablemente su Dios los entregará en tus manos y quedarán sujetos al yugo de tu poder. Therefore, now my lord, inquire if there may be any iniquity of theirs in the sight of their God. If so, let us ascend to them, because their God will surely deliver them to you, and they will be subjugated under the yoke of your power.25Pero si este pueblo no ha ofendido a su Dios, no podremos resistirle, porque le defenderá su Dios, y vendremos a ser el escarnio de toda la tierra.” But if, in truth, there may be no offense of this people before their God, we will not be able to resist them, because their God will defend them, and we will become a disgrace to the whole earth.”26Acabado que hubo Aquior de hablar estas palabras, se indignaron todos los magnates de Holofernes y pensaban quitarle la vida, diciéndose uno a otro: And it happened, when Achior had ceased to speak these words, all the great men of Holofernes were angry, and they intended to execute him, saying to each other:27“¿Quién es este que dice que al rey Nabucodonosor y a sus ejércitos pueden resistir los hijos de Israel, unos hombres sin armas, sin valor y sin pericia en el arte militar? “Who is this, that says the sons of Israel are able to resist king Nebuchadnezzar and his armies: unarmed men, and without strength, and without skill in the art of fighting?28Por eso, para que Aquior conozca cómo nos engaña, subamos a esas montañas, y después de cautivar los más valientes de entre ellos, será pasado a cuchillo él juntamente con los mismos, Therefore, so that Achior may know that he has failed us, let us ascend to the mountains. And, when the most powerful among them have been taken, then, with them, he will be impaled with the sword.29para que sepa todo el mundo que Nabucodonosor es el dios de la tierra y que no hay otro fuera de él.” So may every people know that Nebuchadnezzar is god of the earth, and there is no other, except him.”
