¹Después que estos se hubieron retirado, entró Judit en su oratorio, y vistiéndose de cilicio, esparció ceniza sobre su cabeza, y postrada ante el Señor clamaba a Él, diciendo: And when they were gone, Judith entered her place of prayer. And clothing herself with haircloth, she placed ashes on her head. And prostrating herself to the Lord, she cried out to the Lord, saying:²“Señor Dios de mi padre Simeón, que le diste una espada para castigar aquellos extranjeros que por una impura pasión violaron y deshonraron una virgen, llenándola de afrenta; “O Lord, God of my father Simeon, you gave him a sword to defend against foreigners, who stood out as violators by their defilement, and who uncovered the thigh of the virgin unto shame.³Tú que entregaste sus mujeres a la esclavitud, y sus hijas al cautiverio, y repartiste todos los despojos entre tus siervos, que ardieron de celo por tu honor; socorre, te suplico, Señor Dios mío, a esta viuda. And you gave their wives into plunder, and their daughters into captivity, and all their spoils to be divided to the servants, who were zealous with your zeal. Bring help, I ask you, O Lord my God, to me, a widow.⁴Tú obraste las maravillas de los tiempos antiguos, las ideaste unas tras otras, y se ha hecho lo que Tú has querido; For you have acted in the past, and you have decided one thing after another. And what you have willed, this too has happened.⁵pues todos tus caminos están preparados de antemano, y Tú tienes dispuestos tus juicios según tu providencia. For all your ways have been prepared, and you have placed your judgments within your providence.⁶Vuelve ahora la vista sobre el campamento de los asirios, como te dignaste en otra ocasión volverla sobre el de los egipcios, cuando armados perseguían a tus siervos, confiando en sus carros, en su caballería y en la muchedumbre de los guerreros. Look upon the camp of the Assyrians now, just as you deigned to look upon the camp of the Egyptians, when their weapons rushed after your servants, trusting in their four-horse chariots, and in their horsemen, and in a multitude of warriors.⁷Mas Tú tendiste la vista sobre el campamento y las tinieblas les quitaron la fuerza; But you gazed upon their camp, and darkness wearied them.⁸el abismo detuvo sus pasos y las aguas los cubrieron. Ante tu ira caiga por tierra el poder de ellos, ya que han resuelto violar tu Santuario, profanar el Tabernáculo dedicado a tu nombre y derribar con su espada los cuernos de tu altar. Raise up your arm, just as from the beginning, and throw down their power by your power. Let their power fall, in their anger, for they promise themselves to violate your sanctuary, and to pollute the tabernacle of your name, and to cut down by their sword the horn of your altar.¹²Haz, Señor, que con su propia espada sea cortada su soberbia. Let him be seized by the snare of his own eyes in my regard, and may you strike him by the attraction of my lips.¹⁴Pon firmeza en mi corazón para despreciarlo, y valor para destruirlo; Give me constancy in my soul, so that I may hold him in contempt, and give me virtue, so that I may overthrow him.¹⁵porque será un monumento en honor de tu nombre cuando la mano de una mujer lo derribare. For this will be a memorial to your name, when he will be overthrown by the hand of a woman.¹⁶Porque no consiste, Señor, tu poder en la multitud, y tu voluntad no depende de la fuerza de los caballos. Desde el principio te han desagradado los soberbios, mientras te ha sido siempre acepta la oración de los humildes y mansos. For your power, O Lord, is not in numbers, nor is your will with the strength of horses, nor from the beginning have the arrogant been pleasing to you.
