Jeremías 18
1Palabra que de parte de Yahvé llegó a Jeremías en estos términos: The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying:2“Levántate y desciende a la casa del alfarero, y allí te haré oír mis palabras.” “Rise up and descend into the house of the potter, and there you will hear my words.”3Descendí a la casa del alfarero, y he aquí que este estaba trabajando sobre la rueda. And I descended into the house of the potter, and behold, he was making a work on the wheel.4Mas la vasija que el alfarero hacía de barro se deshizo entre sus manos, por lo cual volvió a hacer otra vasija de la forma que le plugo. And the vessel, which he was making with his hands out of clay, broke. And turning away, he made another vessel, for it had been pleasing in his eyes to make it.5Y me llegó la palabra de Yahvé que decía: Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying:6“¿Acaso no puedo hacer Yo con vosotros, oh casa de Israel, como hace este alfarero?, dice Yahvé. Mirad lo que es el barro en la mano del alfarero, eso mismo sois vosotros en mi mano, oh casa de Israel. “Am I not able to do with you, O house of Israel, just as this potter has done, says the Lord? Behold, like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand, O house of Israel.7A veces hablo Yo contra una nación o un reino, para arrancarlo, para derribarlo y para destruirlo; Suddenly, I will speak against a nation and against a kingdom, so that I may uproot, and destroy, and scatter it.8Si aquella nación contra la cual he hablado se convierte de su maldad, Yo también me arrepiento del mal que había pensado hacerle. If that nation, against which I have spoken, will repent from their evil, I too will repent from the evil that I have decided I would do to them.9Y a veces pienso en fundar y plantar una nación o un reino, And soon, I will speak about a nation and about a kingdom, so that I may build and plant it.10si (esta nación) obra mal ante mis ojos, y no escucha mi voz. Yo también me arrepiento del bien que dije que le haría. If it does evil in my sight, so as not to listen to my voice, I will repent of the good that I have said I would do to it.11Habla ahora, a los hombres de Judá y a los habitantes de Jerusalén, diciendo: Así dice Yahvé: He aquí que Yo preparo males para vosotros, y estoy trazando un plan en daño vuestro. Convertíos cada cual de su mal camino, y enmendad vuestras costumbres y vuestras obras.” Now, therefore, speak to the men of Judah and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying: Thus says the Lord: Behold, I am forming an evil against you, and I am considering a plan against you. Let each one of you return from his evil way, and direct your ways and your intentions well.”12Pero ellos dicen: “Es inútil, seguiremos nuestras propias ideas, y obre cada uno según la dureza de su mal corazón.” And they said: “We have lost hope. And so we will follow our own thoughts, and each of us will act according to the depravity of his own evil heart.”13Por esto, así dice Yahvé: “Preguntad a los pueblos: ¿Quién jamás oyó cosas cómo estas? Crímenes horribles ha cometido la virgen de Israel. For this reason, thus says the Lord: “Inquire among the Gentiles. Who has heard of such horrible things as the virgin of Israel has done to excess?14¿Acaso puede faltar la nieve en las peñas de la tierra o en el Líbano? ¿o se secan las aguas que vienen de lejos, frescas y corrientes? Do the snows of Lebanon fail to fall on the rocks of the field? Or are the cold waters, which burst forth and flow down, able to be rooted out?15Pues mi pueblo se ha olvidado de Mí; queman incienso a los ídolos que los hacen tropezar en sus caminos, en las sendas antiguas, para que yendo por (su propio) camino, por vía no allanada, Yet my people have forgotten me, offering useless libations, and stumbling in their ways, in the paths of the world, so that they walk by these on an unmarked route.16convierten su tierra en un desierto, objeto de eterno ludibrio. Todo aquel que pase junto a ella, quedará pasmado y meneará la cabeza. And so their land has been given over to desolation and to perpetual hissing. Each one who passes by will be astonished and will shake his head.17Como viento solano los dispersaré delante del enemigo; les mostraré las espaldas, y no el rostro, en el día de su calamidad.” Like a burning wind, I will disperse them in the sight the enemy. I will show them the back, and not the face, in the day of their perdition.”18Ellos dijeron: “Venid, vamos a urdir asechanzas contra Jeremías; porque no falta todavía la Ley al sacerdote, ni el consejo al sabio, ni el oráculo al profeta. Vamos, pues, y ataquémosle con la lengua, y no hagamos caso de ninguna de sus palabras.” And they said: “Come, and let us devise a plan against Jeremiah. For the law will not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor a sermon from the prophet. Come, and let us strike him with the tongue, and let us pay no attention to any of his words.”19Préstame, oh Yahvé, tu atención, y escucha la voz de mis adversarios. Attend to me, O Lord, and hear the voice of my adversaries.20¿Así se paga bien con mal? Pues ellos han cavado una fosa para mi vida. Acuérdate de cómo me he presentado ante Ti, para hablar en favor de ellos y sustraerlos a tu ira. Should evil be rendered for good? For they have dug a pit for my soul! Remember that I have stood in your sight, so as to speak on their behalf for good, and to avert your indignation from them.21Por eso, abandona a sus hijos al hambre, y entrégalos al poder de la espada; quédense sus mujeres viudas y sin hijos, mueran sus maridos de muerte violenta, y sean traspasados sus jóvenes en la batalla por la espada. Because of this, give their sons over to famine, and bring them to the hand of the sword. Let their wives be widows without children. And let their husbands be slain by death. Let their youths be stabbed with the sword in battle.22Óiganse alaridos desde sus casas, cuando de repente hagas venir sobre ellos bandas armadas; porque cavaron una fosa para prenderme, y tendieron a mis pies lazos ocultos. Let an outcry be heard from their houses. For you will lead the robber upon them suddenly. For they have dug a pit, so that they may seize me, and they have hidden snares for my feet.23Péro Tú, Yahvé, conoces todos sus planes de destruirme; ¡no les perdones su iniquidad, ni borres de tu presencia su pecado! ¡Que tropiecen delante de Ti! Castígalos en el tiempo de tu ira. But you, O Lord, know all their plans against me unto death. May you not forgive their iniquity, and do not allow their sin be taken away from your face. Let them be thrown down in your sight, in the time of your fury, so that you may destroy them.
