1Entonces, pues, Pilato tomó a Jesús y lo hizo azotar. Therefore, Pilate then took Jesus into custody and scourged him.2Luego los soldados trenzaron una corona de espinas, que le pusieron sobre la cabeza, y lo vistieron con un manto de púrpura. And the soldiers, plaiting a crown of thorns, imposed it on his head. And they put a purple garment around him.3Y acercándose a Él, decían: “¡Salve, rey de los judíos!” y le daban bofetadas. And they were approaching him and saying, “Hail, king of the Jews!” And they struck him repeatedly.4Pilato salió otra vez afuera, y les dijo: “Os lo traigo fuera, para que sepáis que yo no encuentro contra Él ningún cargo”. Then Pilate went outside again, and he said to them: “Behold, I am bringing him out to you, so that you may realize that I find no case against him.”5Entonces Jesús salió fuera, con la corona de espinas y el manto de púrpura, y (Pilato) les dijo: “¡He aquí al hombre!” (Then Jesus went out, bearing the crown of thorns and the purple garment.) And he said to them, “Behold the man.”6Los sumos sacerdotes y los satélites, desde que lo vieron, se pusieron a gritar: “¡Crucifícalo, crucifícalo!” Pilato les dijo: “Tomadlo vosotros, y crucificadlo; porque yo no encuentro en Él ningún delito”. Therefore, when the high priests and the attendants had seen him, they cried out, saying: “Crucify him! Crucify him!” Pilate said to them: “Take him yourselves and crucify him. For I find no case against him.”7Los judíos le respondieron: “Nosotros tenemos una Ley, y según esta Ley, debe morir, porque se ha hecho Hijo de Dios”. The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and according to the law, he ought to die, for he has made himself the Son of God.”8Ante estas palabras, aumentó el temor de Pilato. Therefore, when Pilate had heard this word, he was more fearful.9Volvió a entrar al pretorio, y preguntó a Jesús: “¿De dónde eres Tú?” Jesús no le dio respuesta. And he entered into the praetorium again. And he said to Jesus. “Where are you from?” But Jesus gave him no response.10Díjole, pues, Pilato: “¿A mí no me hablas? ¿No sabes que tengo el poder de librarte y el poder de crucificarte?” Therefore, Pilate said to him: “Will you not speak to me? Do you not know that I have authority to crucify you, and I have authority to release you?”11Jesús le respondió: “No tendrías sobre Mí ningún poder, si no te hubiera sido dado de lo alto; por esto quien me entregó a ti, tiene mayor pecado”. Jesus responded, “You would not have any authority over me, unless it were given to you from above. For this reason, he who has handed me over to you has the greater sin.”12Desde entonces Pilato buscaba cómo dejarlo libre; pero los judíos se pusieron a gritar diciendo: “Si sueltas a este, no eres amigo del César: todo el que se pretende rey, se opone al César”. And from then on, Pilate was seeking to release him. But the Jews were crying out, saying: “If you release this man, you are no friend of Caesar. For anyone who makes himself a king contradicts Caesar.”13Pilato, al oír estas palabras, hizo salir a Jesús afuera; después se sentó en el tribunal en el lugar llamado Lithóstrotos, en hebreo Gábbatha. Now when Pilate had heard these words, he brought Jesus outside, and he sat down in the seat of judgment, in a place which is called the Pavement, but in Hebrew, it is called the Elevation.14Era la preparación de la Pascua, alrededor de la hora sexta. Y dijo a los judíos: “He aquí a vuestro Rey”. Now it was the preparation day of the Passover, about the sixth hour. And he said to the Jews, “Behold your king.”15Pero ellos se pusieron a gritar: “¡Muera! ¡Muera! ¡Crucifícalo!” Pilato les dijo: “¿A vuestro rey he de crucificar?” Respondieron los sumos sacerdotes: “¡Nosotros no tenemos otro rey que el César!” But they were crying out: “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your king?” The high priests responded, “We have no king except Caesar.”16Entonces se lo entregó para que fuese crucificado. Tomaron, pues, a Jesús; Therefore, he then handed him over to them to be crucified. And they took Jesus and led him away.17y Él, llevándose su cruz, salió para el lugar llamado “El cráneo”, en hebreo Gólgotha, And carrying his own cross, he went forth to the place which is called Calvary, but in Hebrew it is called the Place of the Skull.18donde lo crucificaron, y con Él a otros dos, uno de cada lado, quedando Jesús en el medio. There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on each side, with Jesus in the middle.19Escribió también Pilato un título que puso sobre la cruz. Estaba escrito: “Jesús Nazareno, el rey de los judíos”. Then Pilate also wrote a title, and he set it above the cross. And it was written: Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews.20Este título fue leído por muchos judíos, porque el lugar donde Jesús fue crucificado se encontraba próximo a la ciudad; y estaba redactado en hebreo, en latín y en griego. Therefore, many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was close to the city. And it was written in Hebrew, in Greek, and in Latin.21Mas los sumos sacerdotes de los judíos dijeron a Pilato: “No escribas “el rey de los judíos”, sino escribe que Él ha dicho: “Soy el rey de los judíos”. Then the high priests of the Jews said to Pilate: Do not write, ‘King of the Jews,’ but that he said, ‘I am King of the Jews.’22Respondió Pilato: “Lo que escribí, escribí”. Pilate responded, “What I have written, I have written.”23Cuando los soldados hubieron crucificado a Jesús, tomaron sus vestidos, de los que hicieron cuatro partes, una para cada uno, y también la túnica. Esta túnica era sin costura, tejida de una sola pieza desde arriba. Then the soldiers, when they had crucified him, took his garments, and they made four parts, one part to each soldier, and the tunic. But the tunic was seamless, woven from above throughout the whole.24Se dijeron, pues, unos a otros: “No la rasguemos, sino echemos suertes sobre ella para saber de quién será”; a fin de que se cumpliese la Escritura: “Se repartieron mis vestidos, y sobre mi túnica echaron suertes”. Y los soldados hicieron esto. Then they said to one another, “Let us not cut it, but instead let us cast lots over it, to see whose it will be.” This was so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, saying: “They have distributed my garments among themselves, and for my vesture they have cast lots.” And indeed, the soldiers did these things.25Junto a la cruz de Jesús estaba de pie su madre, y también la hermana de su madre, María, mujer de Cleofás, y María Magdalena. And standing beside the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother’s sister, and Mary of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.26Jesús, viendo a su madre y, junto a ella, al discípulo que amaba, dijo a su madre: “Mujer, he ahí a tu hijo”. Therefore, when Jesus had seen his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing near, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold your son.”27Después dijo al discípulo: “He ahí a tu madre”. Y desde este momento el discípulo la recibió consigo. Next, he said to the disciple, “Behold your mother.” And from that hour, the disciple accepted her as his own.28Después de esto, Jesús, sabiendo que todo estaba acabado, para que tuviese cumplimiento la Escritura, dijo: “Tengo sed”. After this, Jesus knew that all had been accomplished, so in order that the Scripture might be completed, he said, “I thirst.”29Había allí un vaso lleno de vinagre. Empaparon pues, en vinagre una esponja, que ataron a un hisopo, y la aproximaron a su boca. And there was a container placed there, full of vinegar. Then, placing a sponge full of vinegar around hyssop, they brought it to his mouth.30Cuando hubo tomado el vinagre, dijo: “Está cumplido”, e inclinando la cabeza, entregó el espíritu. Then Jesus, when he had received the vinegar, said: “It is consummated.” And bowing down his head, he surrendered his spirit.31Como era la Preparación a la Pascua, para que los cuerpos no quedasen en la cruz durante el sábado —porque era un día grande el de aquel sábado— los judíos pidieron a Pilato que se les quebrase las piernas, y los retirasen. Then the Jews, because it was the preparation day, so that the bodies would not remain upon the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a great day), they petitioned Pilate in order that their legs might be broken, and they might be taken away.32Vinieron, pues, los soldados y quebraron las piernas del primero, y luego del otro que había sido crucificado con Él. Therefore, the soldiers approached, and, indeed, they broke the legs of the first one, and of the other who was crucified with him.33Mas llegando a Jesús y viendo que ya estaba muerto, no le quebraron las piernas; But after they had approached Jesus, when they saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs.34pero uno de los soldados le abrió el costado con la lanza, y al instante salió sangre y agua. Instead, one of the soldiers opened his side with a lance, and immediately there went out blood and water.35Y el que vio, ha dado testimonio —y su testimonio es verdadero, y él sabe que dice verdad— a fin de que vosotros también creáis. And he who saw this has offered testimony, and his testimony is true. And he knows that he speaks the truth, so that you also may believe.36Porque esto sucedió para que se cumpliese la Escritura: “Ningún hueso le quebrantaréis”. For these things happened so that the Scripture would be fulfilled: “You shall not break a bone of him.”37Y también otra Escritura dice: “Volverán los ojos hacia Aquel a quien traspasaron”. And again, another Scripture says: “They shall look upon him, whom they have pierced.”38Después de esto, José de Arimatea, que era discípulo de Jesús, pero ocultamente, por miedo a los judíos, pidió a Pilato llevarse el cuerpo de Jesús, y Pilato se lo permitió. Vino, pues, y se llevó el cuerpo. Then, after these things, Joseph from Arimathea, (because he was a disciple of Jesus, but a secret one for fear of the Jews) petitioned Pilate so that he might take away the body of Jesus. And Pilate gave permission. Therefore, he went and took away the body of Jesus.39Vino también Nicodemo, el que antes había ido a encontrarlo de noche; este trajo una mixtura de mirra y áloe, como cien libras. Now Nicodemus also arrived, (who had gone to Jesus at first by night) bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloe, weighing about seventy pounds.40pues, el cuerpo de Jesús y lo envolvieron en fajas con las especies aromáticas, según la manera de sepultar de los judíos. Therefore, they took the body of Jesus, and they bound it with linen cloths and the aromatic spices, just as it is the manner of the Jews to bury.41En el lugar donde lo crucificaron había un jardín, y en el jardín un sepulcro nuevo, donde todavía nadie había sido puesto. Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden there was a new tomb, in which no one had yet been laid.42Allí fue donde, por causa de la Preparación de los judíos, y por hallarse próximo este sepulcro, pusieron a Jesús. Therefore, because of the preparation day of the Jews, since the tomb was nearby, they placed Jesus there.
