Job 1
There was a man in the land of Uz named Job, and he was a simple and honest man, fearing God and withdrawing from evil.2Le nacieron siete hijos y tres hijas, And there had been born to him seven sons and three daughters.3y poseía siete mil ovejas, tres mil camellos, quinientas yuntas de bueyes, quinientas asnas, y muy numerosa servidumbre. And his possession was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, along with five hundred pairs of oxen and five hundred she-donkeys, and also a very large family. And this man was great among all the people of the east.4Sus hijos solían visitarse el uno al otro en sus casas y celebrar banquetes, cada cual en su día, e invitaban también a sus tres hermanas a comer y beber con ellos. And his sons went and made a feast by houses, each one on his day. And sending, they called their three sisters to eat and drink with them.5Concluido el turno de los días del convite, Job los hacía venir, y los santificaba. And when the days of their feasting had been completed, Job sent to them and sanctified them, and, getting up at dawn, he offered holocausts for each one. For he said, “Perhaps my sons have sinned and have not praised God in their hearts.” So Job did all the days.6Un día cuando los hijos de Dios fueron a presentarse delante de Yahvé, vino también entre ellos Satanás. But on a certain day, when the sons of God came to attend in the presence of the Lord, Satan also arrived among them.7Y dijo Yahvé a Satanás: “¿De dónde vienes?” The Lord said to him, “Where do you come from?” Answering, he said, “I have circled the land, and walked around in it.”8Y preguntó Yahvé a Satanás: “¿Has reparado en mi siervo Job?, pues no hay ninguno como él en la tierra, varón perfecto y recto, temeroso de Dios y apartado del mal.” And the Lord said to him, “Have you not considered my servant, Job? For there is no one like him in the land, a simple and honest man, fearing God and withdrawing from evil.”9Respondió Satanás a Yahvé, y dijo: “¿Acaso teme Job a Dios desinteresadamente? Answering him, Satan said, “Does Job fear God to no purpose?10¿No le has rodeado con tu protección por todas partes a él, su casa y todo cuanto tiene? Has bendecido la obra de sus manos, y su hacienda se ha multiplicado sobre la tierra. Have you not fortified him, as well as his house and every one of his belongings around him, blessed the works of his hands, and his possession has increased in the land?11Pero anda, extiende tu mano y toca cuanto es suyo, y verás cómo te maldice en la cara.” But extend your hand a little, and touch all that he possesses, and see if he still praises you to your face.”12Dijo entonces Yahvé a Satanás: “He aquí que todo cuanto tiene está en tu mano; pero no extiendas tu mano contra su persona.” Therefore, the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, everything that he has is in your hand, only do not extend your hand against him.” And Satan departed from the face of the Lord.13Ahora bien, mientras un día sus hijos y sus hijas estaban comiendo y bebiendo vino en casa de su hermano mayor, So, on a certain day, when his sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine, in the house of their first-born brother,14llegó un mensajero a Job y dijo: “Estaban los bueyes arando, y las asnas paciendo junto a ellos, a messenger came to Job, who said, “The oxen were plowing, and the donkeys were grazing beside them,15cuando cayeron sobre ellos los sabeos y se los llevaron, pasando a cuchillo a los siervos. Y yo solo he escapado para traerte la noticia.” and the Sabeans rushed in and carried away everything, and they struck the servants with the sword; and I alone evaded them to tell you.”16Todavía estaba este hablando, cuando llegó otro, que dijo: “Fuego de Dios ha caído del cielo, que abrasó a las ovejas y a los siervos, devorándolos; yo solo he podido escapar para traerte la noticia.” And while he was still speaking, another arrived, and he said, “The fire of God fell from heaven, and, having struck the sheep and the servants, it consumed them; and I alone escaped to tell you.”17Todavía estaba este hablando, cuando vino otro, que dijo: “Los caldeos, divididos en tres cuadrillas, cayeron sobre los camellos y se los llevaron, pasando a cuchillo a los siervos; y yo solo he escapado para traerte la noticia.” And while he also was still speaking, another arrived, and he said, “The Chaldeans organized three attacks, and advanced on the camels and took them; and not only that, but they have struck the servants with the sword; and I alone fled to tell you.”18Aún estaba este hablando, cuando entró otro y dijo: “Mientras tus hijos y tus hijas estaban comiendo y bebiendo vino en casa de su hermano mayor, He was still speaking, and behold, another entered, and he said, “Your sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine in the house of their first-born brother,19sobrevino del otro lado del desierto un gran viento, que sacudió las cuatro esquinas de la casa, la cual cayó sobre los jóvenes, que quedaron muertos; y yo solo he escapado para traerte la noticia.” when suddenly a severe wind rushed forth from a region of the desert and shook the four corners of the house, which collapsed and crushed your children, and they are dead; and I alone escaped to tell you.”20Entonces Job se levantó, rasgó su manto y se rapó la cabeza. Y postrado en tierra adoró, Then Job got up and tore his garments, and, having shaved his head, he collapsed on the ground, and worshipped,21y dijo: “Desnudo salí de las entrañas de mi madre y desnudo volveré allá. Yahvé lo ha dado, Yahvé lo ha quitado. ¡Sea bendito el nombre de Yahvé!” and he said, “Naked I departed from my mother’s womb, and naked I shall return. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away. Just as it pleased the Lord, so has it been done. Blessed be the name of the Lord.”22En todo esto no pecó Job, ni dijo palabra insensata contra Dios. In all this, Job did not sin by his lips, nor did he speak any foolish thing against God.
