Job 21

¹Replicó Job y dijo: Then Job responded by saying:²“Escuchad bien mis palabras. Que me deis, a lo menos, este consuelo. I beseech you to hear my words and to do penance.³Toleradme, para que pueda hablar; y cuando haya hablado, podréis burlaros. Permit me, and I will speak, and afterwards, if you see fit, you can laugh at my words.⁴¿Por ventura me quejo de un hombre? ¿Cómo no ha de impacientarse mi espíritu? Is my dispute against man, so that I would have no reason to be discouraged?⁵Miradme y espantaos, y poned la mano sobre la boca. Listen to me and be astonished, and place a finger over your mouth.⁶Yo, de solo pensarlo, tiemblo, y se apodera de mí un escalofrío. As for me, when I think it over, I am afraid, and trembling convulses my body.⁷¿Cómo es que viven los inicuos, alcanzan muchos años y gran fuerza? Why then do the impious live, having been lifted up and strengthened with riches?⁸Sus hijos viven en su presencia, y sus vástagos ante sus ojos. They see their offspring continue before them: a commotion of close relatives and of children’s children in their sight.⁹Sus casas están en paz, sin temer nada, y la vara de Dios no los alcanza. Their houses have been secure and peaceable, and there is no staff of God over them.¹⁰Sus toros son siempre fecundos, sus vacas paren y no abortan. Their cattle have conceived and have not miscarried; their cow has given birth and is not deprived of her newborn.¹¹Como manadas de ovejas salen sus pequeñuelos, y sus niños saltan (de gozo). Their little ones go out like a flock, and their children jump around playfully.¹²Bailan al son de la pandereta y de la cítara, y se regocijan al son de la flauta. They take up the timbrel and the lyre, and they rejoice at the sound of the organ.¹³Pasan en delicias sus días, y sin darse cuenta bajan al sepulcro. Their days are prolonged in wealth, yet, in an instant, they descend into hell.¹⁴Y, sin embargo, estos dicen a Dios: «Retírate de nosotros, no nos gusta conocer tus caminos. Who has said to God, “Depart from us, for we do not want the knowledge of your ways.¹⁵¿Qué es el Todopoderoso para que le sirvamos? ¿Qué ganaremos rogándole?» Who is the Almighty that we should serve him? And how is it helpful to us if we pray to him?”¹⁶¿No está su fortuna en sus manos? ¡Lejos de mí el consejo de los impíos! It is true that their good things are not in their power. May the counsel of the impious be far from me!¹⁷Pues ¡cuántas veces se apaga la lámpara de los malvados, y viene sobre ellos su destrucción! ¡Y cuántas veces (Dios) en su ira les asigna dolores! How often will the lamp of the wicked be extinguished, and a deluge overtake them, and how often will he distribute the afflictions of his wrath?¹⁸Son como hojarasca llevada por el viento, como tamo que arrebata un torbellino. They will be like chaff before the face of the wind, and like ashes that the whirlwind scatters.¹⁹(Dicen) que Dios guarda para los hijos la iniquidad del (padre). ¡Que le castigue a él, para que sepa! God will preserve the grief of the father for his sons, and, when he repays, then he will understand.²⁰¡Vean sus propios ojos su ruina, y beba él mismo la ira del Omnipotente! His eyes will see his own destruction, and he will drink from the wrath of the Almighty.²¹Pues ¿qué interés puede tener él por el futuro de su casa, cuando se le cortare el número de sus meses? For what does he care what happens to his house after him, or if the number of its months are reduced by half?²²¿Es acaso a Dios, a quien se puede enseñar sabiduría, siendo Él quien juzga a los grandes? Can anyone teach holy knowledge to God, who judges the exalted?²³Uno muere en su pleno vigor, enteramente feliz y tranquilo, This one dies strong and healthy, rich and happy.²⁴cubiertas sus entrañas de grosura, bien empapada la médula de sus huesos; His gut is full of fat and his bones are moistened with marrow.²⁵y; otro muere en amargura de alma, sin haber gozado de los bienes. In truth, another dies in bitterness of soul, without any resources.²⁶Pero yacen en el polvo de modo igual, y los cubren los gusanos. And yet they will sleep together in the dust, and worms will cover them.²⁷Ya conozco vuestros pensamientos, y los planes insidiosos que fraguáis contra mí. Surely, I know your thoughts and your sinful judgments against me.²⁸Porque decís: «¿Dónde está la casa del opresor? ¿Qué se hizo de la tienda que habitaban los impíos?» For you say, “Where is the house of the ruler, and where are the tabernacles of the impious?”²⁹¿No habéis preguntado jamás a los que pasan por el camino? Por eso tampoco conocéis lo que os indican: Ask any passerby whom you wish, and you will realize that he understands these same things:³⁰que en el día de la perdición es salvado el impío, y que escapa en el día de la ira. that the evil-doer is reserved for the day of destruction, and he will be led to the day of wrath.³¹¿Quién le echa en cara su conducta? y por lo que hizo ¿quién lo castiga? Who will reprove his way to his face, and who will repay him for what he has done?³²Es llevado al sepulcro (con honor), y sobre su túmulo se vela. He will be led to the tomb, and he will remain awake in the chaos of the dead.³³Leves le son los terrones del valle; y todos siguen en pos de él, así como no tienen número los que van delante de él. He has been found acceptable to the banks of the River of Lamentation, and he will draw any man towards him, and there are countless before him.³⁴¿Cómo pues me consoláis con vanas palabras si vuestras respuestas no son más que perfidia?” Therefore, how long will you console me in vain, when your answer is shown to be repugnant to truth?
