Job 29

1Siguió Job explicando y dijo: Job also added to this, using figures of speech, and he said:2“¡Ojalá volviera a ser como en los meses pasados, como en los días en que Dios me protegía, Who will grant to me that I might be as I was in former months, according to the days when God kept watch over me?3cuando su luz brillaba sobre mi cabeza, y su luz me guiaba en las tinieblas! At that time, his lamp shined over my head, and by his light, I walked through the darkness.4¿Cuál era en la madurez de mi vida, cuando era amigo de Dios y Este guardaba mi morada; I was then just as in the days of my youth, when God was privately in my tabernacle.5cuando el Todopoderoso estaba conmigo, y me rodeaban mis hijos; At that time, the Almighty was with me and my children surrounded me.6cuando lavaba mis pies con leche, y de la roca me brotaban ríos de aceite. Then, I washed my feet with butter, and a boulder poured out rivers of oil for me.7(En aquel tiempo) cuando yo salía a la puerta de la ciudad, y en la plaza establecía mi asiento, When I went to the gate of the city, or to the main street, they prepared a chair for me.8los jóvenes al verme se retiraban, y los ancianos se levantaban, y se mantenían en pie. The youths saw me and hid themselves, and the elders, rising up, remained standing.9Los príncipes contenían la palabra, y ponían su mano sobre la boca. The leaders stopped talking, and they placed a finder over their mouth.10Se callaba la voz de los magnates y su lengua se pegaba a su paladar. The commanders subdued their voice, and their tongue adhered to their throat.11El que me escuchaba, me llamaba dichoso, y el ojo que me veía, daba señas en favor mío. The ear that heard me, blessed me, and the eye that saw me, gave testimony for me.12Yo libraba al pobre que pedía auxilio, y al huérfano que no tenía sostén. This was because I had freed the poor, who cried out, and the orphan, who had no helper.13Sobre mí venía la bendición del que hubiera perecido, y yo alegraba el corazón de la viuda. The blessing of him who would have been destroyed came upon me, and I consoled the heart of the widow.14Me revestía de justicia, y esta me revestía a mí, mi equidad me servía de manto y tiara. I put on justice, and I clothed myself with my judgment, like a robe and a diadem.15Era yo ojo para el ciego, y pie para el cojo, I was an eye for the blind and a foot for the lame.16padre de los pobres, que examinaba con diligencia aun la causa del desconocido. I was the father of the poor; and if I lacked knowledge about any case, I investigated very diligently.17Quebraba los colmillos del malvado, y de sus dientes arrancaba la presa. I crushed the jaws of the impious, and I took away prey from his teeth.18Por lo cual me decía: «Moriré en mi nido, y mis días serán tan numerosos como la arena; And I said, “I will die in my little nest, and like a palm tree, I will multiply my days.19mi raíz se extenderá hacia las aguas, y el rocío pasará la noche en mis hojas. My root has been spread beside the waters, and the dew will remain with my harvest.20Será siempre nueva en mí la gloria mía, y mi arco se renovará en mi mano.» My glory will always be restored, and my bow will be restored to my hand.”21A mí me escuchaban sin perder la paciencia, aguardando silenciosamente mi consejo. Those who heard me, expected vindication, and they listened closely in silence to my counsel.22Después de hablar ya no respondía nadie, porque (cual rocío) caían sobre ellos mis palabras. To my words, they dared to add nothing, and my eloquence poured over them.23Me esperaban como se espera la lluvia, abrían su boca como a la lluvia tardía. They waited for me as for rain, and they opened their mouth as for belated rains.24Si les sonreía estaban admirados, y se alegraban de esa luz de mi rostro. If I had ever laughed at them, they would not have believed it, and the light of my face was not cast down towards the ground.25Yo decidía su conducta y me sentaba a la cabecera, habitaba como un rey entre sus tropas, cual consolador un medio de los afligidos.” If I wished to go to them, I sat down first, and, though I sat like a king surrounded by an army, yet I was a comforter to those who mourned.
