Job 31
1“Había ya hecho pacto con mis ojos de no mirar a doncella. I reached an agreement with my eyes, that I would not so much as think about a virgin.2¿Cuál es, pues, mi porción desde arriba de parte de Dios, y la herencia que desde lo alto me da el Todopoderoso? For what portion should God from above hold for me, and what inheritance should the Almighty from on high keep?3¿No es la perdición para el malvado, y la calamidad para los que obran la iniquidad? Is not destruction held for the wicked and repudiation kept for those who work injustice?4¿No observa El mis caminos y cuenta todos mis pasos? Does he not examine my ways and number all my steps?5Si yo he seguido la mentira, y mi pie ha corrido tras el fraude, If I have walked in vanity, or if my foot has hurried towards deceitfulness,6¡péseme Dios en justa balanza y reconozca mi inocencia! let him weigh me in a just balance, and let God know my simplicity.7Si mis pasos se desviaron del camino, si mi corazón se fue tras mis ojos, y si se ha pegado algo a mis manos, If my steps have turned aside from the way, or if my heart has followed my eyes, or if a blemish has clung to my hands,8¡siembre yo, y coma otro, y sea desarraigado mi linaje! then may I sow, and let another consume, and let my offspring be eradicated.9Si mi corazón se ha dejado seducir por una mujer, y si anduve acechando a la puerta de mi prójimo, If my heart has been deceived over a woman, or if I have waited in ambush at my friend’s door,10¡muela para otro mi mujer, y encórvense ajenos sobre ella! then let my wife be the harlot of another, and let other men lean over her.11Porque esto es cosa nefanda, un crimen que han de juzgar los jueces; For this is a crime and a very great injustice.12un fuego que devora hasta la ruina y destruiría todos mis bienes. It is a fire devouring all the way to perdition, and it roots out all that springs forth.13Si yo he despreciado el derecho de mi siervo, o de mi sierva en su litigio conmigo, If I have despised being subject to judgment with my servant or my maid, when they had any complaint against me,14¿qué podría hacer yo al levantarse el mismo Dios? Cuando Él viniera a juzgar ¿qué respondería yo? then what will I do when God rises to judge, and, when he inquires, how will I respond to him?15El que me hizo en el seno materno, ¿no le hizo también a él? ¿No nos formó uno mismo en la matriz? Is not he who created me in the womb, also he who labored to make him? And did not one and the same form me in the womb?16Si he negado al pobre lo que pedía, si he hecho desfallecer los ojos de la viuda; If I have denied the poor what they wanted and have made the eyes of the widow wait;17si he comido solo mi bocado, sin que comiese de él el huérfano if I have eaten my morsel of food alone, while orphans have not eaten from it;18—desde mi juventud era padre para este, y desde el seno materno he protegido a aquella— (for from my infancy mercy grew with me, and it came out with me from my mother’s womb;)19si no hice caso del que iba a perecer por falta de vestido, o del pobre que estaba desnudo, if I have looked down on him who was perishing because he had no clothing and the poor without any covering,20(y lo dejé) sin que me bendijeran sus carnes al calentarse con el vellón de mis ovejas; if his sides have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep;21si alcé mi mano contra el huérfano, por verme apoyado por los jueces, if I have lifted up my hand over an orphan, even when it might seem to me that I have the advantage over him at the gate;22¡despréndase mi hombro de la espalda, y mi brazo sea arrancado del húmero! then may my shoulder fall from its joint, and may my arm, with all its bones, be broken.23Por cuanto temía el castigo de Dios, no he podido resistir a su majestad. For I have always feared God, like waves flowing over me, whose weight I was unable to bear.24Si he puesto en el oro mi confianza, y al oro he dicho: «Mi seguridad eres tú»; If I have considered gold to be my strength, or if I have called purified gold ‘my Trust;’25si tuve gozo por mi grande hacienda, y por haber juntado mucho mi mano; if I have rejoiced over my great success, and over the many things my hand has obtained;26si al ver el resplandor del sol, y la brillante carrera de la luna, if I gazed upon the sun when it shined and the moon advancing brightly,27fue seducido en secreto mi corazón, y mi mano les mandó un beso de mi boca, so that my heart rejoiced in secret and I kissed my hand with my mouth,28también esto sería una maldad, una falta criminal, pues habría negado a Dios en lo alto. which is a very great iniquity and a denial against the most high God;29Si me holgué de la ruina del que me odiaba, y me gocé cuando le sobrevino el mal; if I have been glad at the ruin of him who hated me and have exulted that evil found him,30aunque no presté al pecado mi lengua, pidiendo con maldición su muerte; for I have not been given my throat to sin by asking for a curse on his soul;31si no decían las gentes de mi casa: «¿Quién de su alimento no se ha saciado?» if the men around my tabernacle have not said: “He might give us some of his food, so that we will be filled,”32pues jamás el forastero se quedó de noche al descubierto, porque yo abría mis puertas al pasajero; for the foreigner did not remain at the door, my door was open to the traveler;33si encubrí, como Adán, mi pecado, y oculté en mi seno mi iniquidad, if, as man does, I have hidden my sin and have concealed my iniquity in my bosom;34temiendo a la gran muchedumbre y el desprecio de los parientes, quedando callado y sin salir de mi casa... if I became frightened by an excessive crowd, and the disrespect of close relatives alarmed me, so that I would much rather have remained silent or have gone out the door;35¡Oh si hubiese quien me escuchase! He aquí mi firma. ¡Respóndame el Todopoderoso! ¡Que escriba también mi adversario su libelo de acusación! then, would he grant me a hearing, so that the Almighty would listen to my desire, and he who judges would himself write a book,36Yo lo llevaría sobre mi hombro, me lo ceñiría como diadema. which I would then carry on my shoulder and wrap around me like a crown?37(A mi juez) le daré cuenta de todos mis pasos; como a un príncipe me presentaré a él. With each of my steps, I would pronounce and offer it, as if to a prince.38Si contra mi clama mi tierra, y a una lloran sus surcos, So, if my land cries out against me, and if its furrows weep with it,39por haber yo comido sus frutos sin pagar y afligido a sus cultivadores, if I have used its fruits for nothing but money and have afflicted the souls of its tillers,40¡názcanme abrojos en vez de trigo, y cizaña en vez de cebada!” Fin de las palabras de Job. then, may thistles spring forth for me instead of grain, and thorns instead of barley. (This ended the words of Job.)
