Job 38

¹Entonces Yahvé respondió a Job desde el torbellino, y dijo: But the Lord, responding to Job from a whirlwind, said:²“¿Quién es este que obscurece mis planes con palabras insensatas? Who is this that wraps sentences in unskilled words?³Cíñete ahora los lomos, como varón; que Yo te preguntaré, y tú me instruirás. Gird your waist like a man. I will question you, and you must answer me.⁴¿Dónde estabas tú cuando Yo cimentaba la tierra? Dilo, si tienes inteligencia. Where were you, when I set the foundations of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding.⁵¿Quién le trazó sus dimensiones —tú lo sabes seguro— o quién extendió sobre ella la cuerda? Who set its measurements, if you know, or who stretched a line over it?⁶¿En qué se hincan sus bases, o quien asentó su piedra angular, Upon what have its bases been grounded, and who set forth its cornerstone,⁷mientras cantaban en coro las estrellas de la mañana, entre los aplausos de todos los hijos de Dios? when the morning stars praised me together, and all the sons of God made a joyful noise?⁸¿Quién cerró con puertas el mar, cuando impetuoso salía del seno? Who enclosed the sea with doors, when it broke forth as if issuing from the womb,⁹al ponerle Yo las nubes por vestido y las tinieblas por envoltura; when I stationed a cloud as its garment and wrapped it in a mist as if swaddling an infant?¹⁰imponiéndole mi ley y poniendo barras y puertas, I encircled it with my limits, and I positioned its bars and doors.¹¹con estas palabras: «Hasta aquí llegarás, y no pasarás más allá; y ahí se quebrantará el orgullo de tus olas.» And I said: “This far you will approach, and you will proceed no further, and here you will break your swelling waves.”¹²¿Acaso en algún momento de tu vida has dado tú órdenes a la mañana, señalado su lugar a la aurora, Did you, after your birth, command the birth of the sun and show the sunrise its place?¹³para que ocupe los cabos de la tierra, y sean expulsados de ellas los malhechores? Have the gates of death been opened to you, and have you seen the doors of darkness?¹⁸Ya que has investigado la tierra en toda su anchura, habla, si todo lo sabes. Have you considered the breadth of the earth? If you know all things, reveal them to me.¹⁹¿Dónde está el camino que conduce a la morada de la luz? y el lugar de las tinieblas, ¿dónde se halla? Which is the way that holds the light, and which is the place of darkness?²⁰ya que tú las conduces a sus dominios, y conoces los senderos que llevan a su morada. In this way, you might lead each thing to its final place, and understand the paths of its house.²¹Tú debes saberlo, porque habías nacido ya entonces, y el número de tus días es tan grande. So then, did you know when you were to be born? In what way is the light scattered, and the heat distributed, over the earth?²⁵¿Quién abre regueras al aguacero, y camino a la nube tronadora, Who gave a course to the rainstorms, and a path to the resounding thunder,²⁶para hacer llover sobre un país inhabitado, sobre el yermo, donde no vive hombre, so that it would rain on the earth far from man, in the wilderness where no mortal lingers,²⁷para hartar tierras desiertas y vacías, y hacer brotar un poco de hierba? so that it would fill impassable and desolate places, and would bring forth green plants?²⁸¿Tiene padre la lluvia? ¿o quién engendra las gotas del rocío? The waters are hardened to become like stone, and the surface of the abyss freezes over.³¹¿Atas tú los lazos de las Pléyades, o puedes soltar las ataduras del Orión? Will you have the strength to join together the sparkling stars of the Pleiades, or are you able to disperse the circling of Arcturus?³²¿Eres tú quien a su tiempo hace salir los signos del zodíaco, y guía a la Osa con sus cachorros? Can you bring forth the morning star, in its time, and make the evening star rise over the sons of the earth?³³¿Conoces tú las leyes del cielo y fijas su influjo sobre la tierra? Do you know the order of heaven, and can you explain its rules here on the earth?³⁴¿Alzas tú hasta las nubes tu voz, para que caigan sobre ti las copiosas aguas? Can you lift up your voice to the clouds, so that an onslaught of waters will cover you?³⁵¿Despachas tú los rayos, y se van diciéndote: «Henos aquí»? Can you send forth lightning bolts, and will they go, and on returning, say to you: “Here we are?”³⁶¿Quién puso sabiduría en las nubes, e inteligencia en los meteoros? Who placed discernment in the guts of man, or who gave the rooster intelligence?³⁷¿Hay quien con toda su sabiduría puede contar las nubes, y vaciar los odres del cielo, Who can describe the rules of the heavens, or who can put to rest the harmony of heaven?³⁸para que el polvo se transforme en masa sólida, y se peguen unos a otros los terrones? When was the dust cast to become the earth, and when were its clods fastened together?³⁹¿Cazas tú la presa para la leona, y sustentas la vida de los Ieoncillos, Will you seize prey for the lioness, and will you sustain the lives of her young,⁴⁰cuando se acurrucan en sus cubiles, y se retiran a la espesura para estar en acecho? as they rest in their dens or lie in wait in pits?⁴¹¿Quién prepara al cuervo su alimento, cuando sus pollitos gritan hacia Dios, yendo de un lado a otro por falta de comida? Who provides the raven with its meal, when her chicks cry out to God, as they wander around because they have no food?
