Job 3
1Después de esto abrió Job su boca y maldijo el día de su nacimiento. After this, Job opened his mouth and cursed his day,2Tomando Job la palabra dijo: and this is what he said:3“¡Perezca el día en que nací, y la noche que dijo: Ha sido concebido varón! May the day perish on which I was born, and the night, in which it was said, “A man has been conceived.”4Conviértase aquel día en tinieblas; no pregunte por él Dios desde lo alto, ni resplandezca sobre él la luz. May that day be turned into darkness, may God not seek it from above, and may light not illuminate it.5Oscurézcanlo tinieblas y sombra de muerte; cúbralo densa niebla, sea espantosa la negrura de aquel día. Let darkness and the shadow of death obscure it, let a fog overtake it, and let it be enveloped in bitterness.6Apodérese de aquella noche la oscuridad; no se mencione entre los días del año, ni se registre en el cómputo de los meses. Let a whirlwind of darkness take hold of that night, let it not be counted in the days of the year, nor numbered in the months.7Cuéntese aquella noche entre las estériles, en que no se oye canto de alegría. May that night be alone and unworthy of praise.8Maldíganla los que saben maldecir los días, los que saben despertar a Leviatán. May they curse it, who curse the day, who are prepared to awaken a leviathan.9Eclípsense las estrellas de sus albores; espere la luz, que nunca le venga, no vea jamás los párpados de la aurora; Let the stars be concealed with its darkness. Let it expect light, and not see it, nor the rising of the dawn in the East.10por cuanto no cerró las puertas del seno y no ocultó a mis ojos los dolores. For it did not close the doors of the womb that bore me, nor take away evils from my eyes.11¿Por qué no morí en el seno de mi madre, ni expiré al salir de sus entrañas? Why did I not die in the womb? Having left the womb, why did I not immediately perish?12¿Por qué me acogieron las rodillas (de mi padre), y los pechos para que mamara? Why was I received upon the knees? Why was I suckled at the breasts?13Pues ahora reposaría yo en el silencio, dormiría, y así tendría reposo, For by now, I should have been sleeping silently, and taking rest in my sleep14con los reyes y consejeros de la tierra, que se edificaron mausoleos, with the kings and consuls of the earth, who build themselves solitudes,15o con los príncipes que tenían oro, y llenaron sus casas de plata; either with princes, who possess gold and fill their houses with silver,16o no existiría, como aborto secreto, como los niños que no llegan a ver la luz. or, like a hidden miscarriage, I should not have continued, just like those who, being conceived, have not seen the light.17Allí los malvados cesan de hacer violencias, descansan los fatigados, There the impious cease from rebellion, and there the wearied in strength take rest.18gozan los cautivos todos de paz, no oyen ya la voz del sobrestante. And at such times, having been bound together without difficulty, they have not heard the voice of the bailiff.19Allí se hallan chicos y grandes, y también el siervo libre de su amo. The small and great are there, and the servant is free from his master.20¿Por qué conceder luz a los desdichados, y vida a los amargos de espíritu? Why is light given to the miserable, and life to those who are in bitterness of soul,21A los que esperan la muerte, que no viene, aunque la buscan cavando con más empeño que un tesoro. who expect death, and it does not arrive, like those who dig for treasure22Se alegran con júbilo y son felices al hallar el sepulcro. and who rejoice greatly when they have found the grave,23¿(Por qué dar vida) al hombre cuyo camino está encubierto, y a quien Dios tiene cercado? to a man whose way is hidden and whom God has surrounded with darkness?24En vez de comer me alimento con suspiros, y mis gemidos se derraman como agua. Before I eat, I sigh; and like overflowing waters, so is my howl,25Lo que temía, eso me ha sucedido, y lo que recelaba, eso me ha sobrevenido. for the terror that I feared has happened to me, and so has the dread befallen me.26Estoy sin tranquilidad, sin paz, sin descanso, se ha apoderado de mí la turbación.” Have I not remained hidden? Have I not kept silence? Have I not remained calm? Yet indignation has overcome me.
