1Llegada la madrugada, todos los jefes de los sacerdotes y los ancianos del pueblo tuvieron una deliberación contra Jesús para hacerlo morir. Then, when morning arrived, all the leaders of the priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus, so that they might deliver him to death.2Y habiéndolo atado, lo llevaron y entregaron a Pilato, el gobernador. And they led him, bound, and handed him over to Pontius Pilate, the procurator.3Entonces viendo Judas, el que lo entregó, que había sido condenado, fue acosado por el remordimiento, y devolvió las treinta monedas de plata a los sumos sacerdotes y a los ancianos, Then Judas, who betrayed him, seeing that he had been condemned, regretting his conduct, brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the leaders of the priests and the elders,4diciendo: “Pequé, entregando sangre inocente”. Pero ellos dijeron: “A nosotros ¿qué nos importa? tú verás”. saying, “I have sinned in betraying just blood.” But they said to him: “What is that to us? And going out, he hanged himself with a snare.6Mas los sumos sacerdotes, habiendo recogido las monedas, dijeron: “No nos es lícito echarlas en el tesoro de las ofrendas, porque es precio de sangre”. But the leaders of the priests, having taken up the pieces of silver, said, “It is not lawful to put them into the temple offerings, because it is the price of blood.”7Y después de deliberar, compraron con ellas el campo del Alfarero para sepultura de los extranjeros. Then, having taken counsel, they bought the potter’s field with it, as a burying place for sojourners.8Por lo cual ese campo fue llamado Campo de Sangre, hasta el día de hoy. And he did not respond any word to him, so that the procurator wondered greatly.15Ahora bien, con ocasión de la fiesta, el gobernador acostumbraba conceder al pueblo la libertad de un preso, el que ellos quisieran. Now on the solemn day, the procurator was accustomed to release to the people one prisoner, whomever they wished.16Tenían a la sazón, un preso famoso, llamado Barrabás. And at that time, he had a notorious prisoner, who was called Barabbas.17Estando, pues, reunido el pueblo, Pilato les dijo: “¿A cuál queréis que os suelte, a Barrabás o a Jesús, el que se dice Cristo?”, Therefore, having been gathered together, Pilate said to them, “Who is it that you want me to release to you: Barabbas, or Jesus, who is called Christ?”18porque sabía que lo habían entregado por envidia. For he knew that it was out of envy they had handed him over.19Mas mientras él estaba sentado en el tribunal, su mujer le mandó decir: “No tengas nada que ver con ese justo, porque yo he sufrido mucho hoy, en sueños, por Él”. But as he was sitting in the place for the tribunal, his wife sent to him, saying: “It is nothing to you, and he is just. For I have experienced many things today through a vision for his sake.”20Pero los sumos sacerdotes y los ancianos persuadieron a la turba que pidiese a Barrabás, y exigiese la muerte de Jesús. But the leaders of the priests and the elders persuaded the people, so that they would ask for Barabbas, and so that Jesus would perish.21Respondiendo el gobernador les dijo: “¿A cuál de los dos queréis que os suelte?” Ellos dijeron: “A Barrabás”. Then, in response, the procurator said to them, “Which of the two do you want to be released to you?” But they said to him, “Barabbas.”22Díjoles Pilato: “¿Qué haré entonces con Jesús, el que se dice Cristo?” Todos respondieron: “¡Sea crucificado!” Pilate said to them, “Then what shall I do about Jesus, who is called Christ?” They all said, “Let him be crucified.”23Y cuando él preguntó: “Pues ¿qué mal ha hecho?”, gritaron todavía más fuerte, diciendo: “¡Sea crucificado!” The procurator said to them, “But what evil has he done?” But they cried out all the more, saying, “Let him be crucified.”24Viendo Pilato, que nada adelantaba, sino que al contrario crecía el clamor, tomó agua y se lavó las manos delante del pueblo diciendo: “Yo soy inocente de la sangre de este justo. Vosotros veréis”. Then Pilate, seeing that he was able to accomplish nothing, but that a greater tumult was occurring, taking water, washed his hands in the sight of the people, saying: “I am innocent of the blood of this just man. See to it yourselves.”25Y respondió todo el pueblo diciendo: “¡La sangre de Él, sobre nosotros y sobre nuestros hijos!” And the entire people responded by saying, “May his blood be upon us and upon our children.”26Entonces, les soltó a Barrabás; y a Jesús, después de haberlo hecho azotar, lo entregó para que fuese crucificado. Then he released Barabbas to them. But Jesus, having been scourged, he handed over to them, so that he would be crucified.27Entonces, los soldados del gobernador llevaron a Jesús al pretorio, y reunieron alrededor de Él toda la guardia. Then the soldiers of the procurator, taking Jesus up to the praetorium, gathered the entire cohort around him.28Lo despojaron de los vestidos y lo revistieron con un manto de púrpura. And stripping him, they put a scarlet cloak around him.29Trenzaron también una corona de espinas y se la pusieron sobre la cabeza, y una caña en su derecha; y doblando la rodilla delante de Él, lo escarnecían, diciendo: “¡Salve, rey de los judíos!”; And plaiting a crown of thorns, they placed it on his head, with a reed in his right hand. And genuflecting before him, they mocked him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews.”30y escupiendo sobre Él, tomaban la caña y lo golpeaban en la cabeza. And spitting on him, they took the reed and struck his head.31Después de haberse burlado de Él, le quitaron el manto, le pusieron sus vestidos, y se lo llevaron para crucificarlo. And after they had mocked him, they stripped him of the cloak, and clothed him with his own garments, and they led him away to crucify him.32Al salir, encontraron a un hombre de Cirene, de nombre Simón; a este lo requisaron para que llevara la cruz de Él. But as they were going out, they came upon a man of Cyrene, named Simon, whom they compelled to take up his cross.33Y llegados a un lugar llamado Gólgota, esto es, “del Cráneo”, And they arrived at the place which is called Golgotha, which is the place of Calvary.34le dieron a beber vino mezclado con hiel; y gustándolo, no quiso beberlo. And they gave him wine to drink, mixed with gall. And when he had tasted it, he refused to drink it.35Los que lo crucificaron se repartieron sus vestidos, echando suertes. Then, after they had crucified him, they divided his garments, casting lots, in order to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying: “They divided my garments among them, and over my vestment they cast lots.”36Y se sentaron allí para custodiarlo. Then two robbers were crucified with him: one on the right and one on the left.39Y los transeúntes lo insultaban meneando la cabeza y diciendo: But those passing by blasphemed him, shaking their heads,40“Tú que derribas el Templo, y en tres días lo reedificas, ¡sálvate a Ti mismo! Si eres el Hijo de Dios, ¡bájate de la cruz!” and saying: “Ah, so you would destroy the temple of God and in three days rebuild it! Save your own self. If you are the Son of God, descend from the cross.”41De igual modo los sacerdotes se burlaban de Él junto con los escribas y los ancianos, diciendo: And similarly, the leaders of the priests, with the scribes and the elders, mocking him, said:42“A otros salvó, a sí mismo no puede salvarse. Rey de Israel es: baje ahora de la cruz, y creeremos en Él. “He saved others; he cannot save himself. If he is the King of Israel, let him descend now from the cross, and we will believe in him.43Puso su confianza en Dios, que Él lo salve ahora, si lo ama, pues ha dicho: “De Dios soy Hijo”. He trusted in God; so now, let God free him, if he wills him. For he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’ ”44También los ladrones, crucificados con Él, le decían las mismas injurias. Then, the robbers who were crucified with him also reproached him with the very same thing.45Desde la hora sexta, hubo tinieblas sobre toda la tierra hasta la hora nona. Now from the sixth hour, there was darkness over the entire earth, even until the ninth hour.46Y alrededor de la hora nona, Jesús clamó a gran voz, diciendo: “¡Elí, Elí, ¿lama sabactani?”, esto es: “¡Dios mío, Dios mío! ¿por qué me has abandonado?”. And about the ninth hour, Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying: “Eli, Eli, lamma sabacthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?”47Al oír esto, algunos de los que estaban allí dijeron: “A Elías llama este”. Then certain ones who were standing and listening there said, “This man calls upon Elijah.”48Y en seguida uno de ellos corrió a tomar una esponja, que empapó en vinagre, y atándola a una caña, le presentó de beber. And one of them, running quickly, took a sponge and filled it with vinegar, and he set it on a reed and he gave it to him to drink.49Los otros decían: “Déjanos ver si es que viene Elías a salvarlo”. Yet truly, the others said, “Wait. Let us see whether Elijah will come to free him.”50Mas Jesús, clamando de nuevo, con gran voz, exhaló el espíritu. Then Jesus, crying out again with a loud voice, gave up his life.51Y he ahí que el velo del templo se rasgó en dos, de arriba abajo; tembló la tierra, se agrietaron las rocas, And behold, the veil of the temple was torn into two parts, from top to bottom. And the earth was shaken, and the rocks were split apart.52se abrieron los sepulcros y los cuerpos de muchos santos difuntos resucitaron. And the tombs were opened. And many bodies of the saints, which had been sleeping, arose.53Y, saliendo del sepulcro después de la resurrección de Él, entraron en la Ciudad Santa, y se aparecieron a muchos. And going out from the tombs, after his resurrection, they went into the holy city, and they appeared to many.54Entretanto, el centurión y sus compañeros que guardaban a Jesús, viendo el terremoto y lo que había acontecido, se llenaron de espanto y dijeron: “Verdaderamente, Hijo de Dios era este”. Now the centurion and those who were with him, guarding Jesus, having seen the earthquake and the things that were done, were very fearful, saying: “Truly, this was the Son of God.”55Había también allí muchas mujeres que miraban de lejos; las cuales habían seguido a Jesús desde Galilea, sirviéndole. And in that place, there were many women, at a distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering to him.56Entre ellas se hallaban María la Magdalena, María la madre de Santiago y de José, y la madre de los hijos de Zebedeo. Among these were Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.57Llegada la tarde, vino un hombre rico de Arimatea, llamado José, el cual también era discípulo de Jesús. Then, when evening had arrived, a certain wealthy man from Arimathea, named Joseph, arrived, who himself was also a disciple of Jesus.58Se presentó delante de Pilato y pidió el cuerpo de Jesús. Entonces Pilato mandó que se le entregase. This man approached Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered the body to be released.59José tomó, pues, el cuerpo, lo envolvió en una sábana limpia, And Joseph, taking the body, wrapped it in a clean finely-woven linen cloth,60y lo puso en el sepulcro suyo, nuevo, que había hecho tallar en la roca. Después rodó una gran piedra sobre la entrada del sepulcro, y se fue. and he placed it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out of a rock. And he rolled a great stone to the door of the tomb, and he went away.61Estaban allí María la Magdalena y la otra María, sentadas frente al sepulcro. Therefore, order the sepulcher to be guarded until the third day, lest perhaps his disciples may come and steal him, and say to the people, ‘He has risen from the dead.’ And this last error would be worse than the first.”65Pilato les dijo: “Tenéis guardia. Id, guardadlo como sabéis”. Pilate said to them: “You have a guard. Go, guard it as you know how.”66Ellos, pues, se fueron y aseguraron el sepulcro con la guardia, después de haber sellado la piedra.
