1En aquel tiempo apareció Juan el Bautista, predicando en el desierto de Judea, Now in those days, John the Baptist arrived, preaching in the desert of Judea,2y decía: “Arrepentíos, porque el reino de los cielos está cerca”. and saying: “Repent. For the kingdom of heaven has drawn near.”3Este es de quien habló el profeta Isaías cuando dijo: “Voz de uno que clama en el desierto: Preparad el camino del Señor, enderezad sus sendas”. For this is the one who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah, saying: “A voice crying out in the desert: Prepare the way of the Lord. Make straight his paths.”4Juan tenía un vestido de pelos de camello, y un cinto de piel alrededor de su cintura; su comida eran langostas y miel silvestre. Now the same John had a garment made from the hair of camels, and a leather belt around his waist. And his food was locusts and wild honey.5Entonces salía hacia él Jerusalén y toda la Judea y toda la región del Jordán, Then Jerusalem, and all Judea, and the entire region around the Jordan went out to him.6y se hacían bautizar por él en el río Jordán, confesando sus pecados. And they were baptized by him in the Jordan, acknowledging their sins.7Mas viendo a muchos fariseos y saduceos venir a su bautismo, les dijo: “Raza de víboras, ¿quién os ha enseñado a huir de la cólera que viene? Then, seeing many of the Pharisees and Sadducees arriving for his baptism, he said to them: “Progeny of vipers, who warned you to flee from the approaching wrath?8Producid, pues, frutos propios del arrepentimiento. Therefore, produce fruit worthy of repentance.9Y no creáis que podéis decir dentro de vosotros: “Tenemos por padre a Abrahán”; porque yo os digo: “Puede Dios de estas piedras hacer que nazcan hijos a Abrahán”. And do not choose to say within yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that God has the power to raise up sons to Abraham from these stones.10Ya el hacha está puesta a la raíz de los árboles; y todo árbol que no produce buen fruto será cortado y arrojado al fuego. For even now the axe has been placed at the root of the trees. Therefore, every tree that does not produce good fruit shall be cut down and cast into the fire.11Yo, por mi parte, os bautizo con agua para el arrepentimiento; mas Aquel que viene después de mí es más poderoso que yo, y yo no soy digno de llevar sus sandalias. Él os bautizará con Espíritu Santo y fuego. Indeed, I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who will come after me is more powerful than me. I am not worthy to carry his shoes. He will baptize you with the fire of the Holy Spirit.12La pala de aventar está en su mano y va a limpiar su era: reunirá el trigo en el granero, y la paja la quemará en fuego que no se apaga”. His winnowing fan is in his hand. And he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing floor. And he will gather his wheat into the barn. But the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”13Entonces Jesús fue de Galilea al Jordán a Juan para ser bautizado por él. Then Jesus came from Galilee, to John at the Jordan, in order to be baptized by him.14Pero Juan quería impedírselo y le decía: “Yo tengo necesidad de ser bautizado por Ti y ¿Tú vienes a mí?” But John refused him, saying, “I ought to be baptized by you, and yet you come to me?”15Jesús le respondió y dijo: “Deja ahora; porque así conviene que nosotros cumplamos toda justicia”. Entonces (Juan) le dejó. And responding, Jesus said to him: “Permit this for now. For in this way it is fitting for us to fulfill all justice.” Then he allowed him.16Bautizado Jesús, salió al punto del agua, y he aquí que se le abrieron los cielos y vio al Espíritu de Dios, en figura de paloma, que descendía y venía sobre Él. And Jesus, having been baptized, ascended from the water immediately, and behold, the heavens were opened to him. And he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and alighting on him.17Y una voz del cielo decía: “Este es mi Hijo, el Amado, en quien me complazco”. And behold, there was a voice from heaven, saying: “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
