And when king Arad the Canaanite, who was living toward the south, had heard this, namely, that Israel had arrived by the way of spies, he fought against them. And proving to be the victor, he led away prey from them.2Entonces Israel hizo voto a Yahvé, diciendo: “Si entregares a este pueblo en mi mano, destruiré completamente sus ciudades.” But Israel, obliging himself by a vow to the Lord, said: “If you deliver this people into my hand, I will wipe away their cities.”3Oyó Yahvé la voz de Israel y le entregó el cananeo, y destruyeron completamente a ellos y a sus ciudades, por lo cual fue llamado aquel lugar Hormá. And the Lord heard the prayers of Israel, and he delivered the Canaanite, whom they put to death, overthrowing his cities. And they called the name of that place Hormah, that is, Anathema.4Partieron del monte Hor, camino del Mar Rojo para rodear la tierra de Edom. Mas en el camino se impacientó el pueblo, Then they set out from mount Hor, by the way that leads to the Red Sea, to circle around the land of Edom. And the people began to tire of their journey and hardships.5y murmuró contra Dios y contra Moisés: “¿Por qué nos habéis sacado de Egipto para morir en el desierto? Pues no hay pan, y no hay agua; nos provoca ya náusea este pan miserable.” And speaking against God and Moses, they said: “Why did you lead us away from Egypt, so as to die in the wilderness? Bread is lacking; there are no waters. Our soul is now nauseous over this very light food.”6Entonces Yahvé envió contra el pueblo serpientes abrasadoras, las cuales mordían al pueblo; y murió mucha gente de Israel. For this reason, the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people, which wounded or killed many of them.7Y acudió el pueblo a Moisés, diciendo: “Hemos pecado, porque hemos murmurado contra Yahvé y contra ti. Ruega a Yahvé que quite de nosotros las serpientes.” Y Moisés rogó por el pueblo. And so they went to Moses, and they said: “We have sinned, because we have spoken against the Lord and against you. Pray, so that he may take away these serpents from us.” And Moses prayed for the people.8Dijo entonces Yahvé a Moisés: “Hazte una serpiente, y ponla en un asta; quienquiera que haya sido mordido y la mirare, vivirá.” And the Lord said to him: “Make a bronze serpent, and place it as a sign. Whoever, having been struck, gazes upon it, shall live.”9Hizo, pues, Moisés una serpiente de bronce, y la puso sobre un asta, y quienquiera que mordido por una serpiente dirigía su mirada a la serpiente de bronce se curaba. Therefore, Moses made a bronze serpent, and he placed it as a sign. When those who had been struck gazed upon it, they were healed.10Levantaron los hijos de Israel el campamento y acamparon en Obot. And the sons of Israel, setting out, made camp at Oboth.11Partidos de Obot, acamparon en Iyé-Abarim, en el desierto frente a Moab, al oriente. Having departed from there, they pitched their tents at Iye-abarim, in the wilderness, which looks out toward Moab, opposite the eastern region.12Marcharon de allí y acamparon en el valle de Sared. And moving from there, they arrived at the Torrent of Zared.13De allí partieron para acampar a la otra orilla del Arnón, en el desierto. Having left that place behind, they then made camp opposite Arnon, which is in the desert, and which juts out at the borders of the Amorite. For certainly Arnon is at the limit of Moab, dividing the Moabites and the Amorites.14Por eso se dice en el Libro de las Guerras de Yahvé: “Vaheb en Sufá, y los valles del Arnón About this place, it is said in the book of the wars of the Lord: “As he did at the Red Sea, so will he do at the Torrents of Arnon.”15y el declive de los valles que desciende en la región de Ar, y se apoya sobre la frontera de Moab.” The stones of the torrents were bent, so that they might rest in Ar and lie back within the borders of the Moabites.16De allí marcharon a Beer. Beyond that place appeared a well, about which the Lord said to Moses: “Gather the people together, and I will give them water.”17Entonces Israel cantó este cántico: “¡Brota, pozo, celebradle con canción! Then Israel sang this verse: “Let the well rise up.” They sang:18pozo que cavaron los príncipes; lo abrieron los nobles del pueblo con el cetro, con sus cayados.” Del desierto se dirigieron a Mataná; “The well, the leaders dug it, and the commanders of the multitude prepared it, at the direction of the lawgiver, and with their staffs.”19de Mataná, a Nahaliel; de Nahaliel a Bamot; They went from the wilderness to Mattanah, from Mattanah to Nahaliel, from Nahaliel to Bamoth,20y de Bamot al valle que está en las campiñas de Moab, (al pie de) la cumbre del Fasga que mira hacia el desierto. from Bamoth, a valley in the region of Moab, to the top of Pisgah, which looks out opposite the desert.21Israel envió mensajeros a Sehón, rey de los amorreos, diciendo: Then Israel sent messengers to Sihon, the king of the Amorites, saying:22“Quiero pasar por tu tierra. No torceremos hacia los campos y viñas, ni beberemos agua de los pozos; por el camino real iremos hasta pasar tus fronteras.” “I beg you to permit me to cross through your land. We will not turn aside into the fields or the vineyards. We will not drink waters from the wells. We will travel by the royal way, until we have passed your borders.”23Mas Sehón no permitió que Israel pasase por su territorio; antes bien, reuniendo Sehón a toda su gente, salió al encuentro de Israel en el desierto, y vino hasta Jahas donde atacó a Israel. And he was not willing to allow Israel to cross through his borders. But instead, gathering an army, he went out to meet them in the desert, and he arrived at Jahaz and fought against them.24Pero Israel lo hirió a filo de espada y se apoderó de su tierra desde el Arnón hasta el Yaboc, hasta los hijos de Ammón, cuya frontera era fortificada. And he was struck down by them with the edge of the sword, and they possessed his land from Arnon, even to Jabbok and the sons of Ammon. For the borders of the Ammonites were held by a strong fortress.25Tomó Israel todas estas ciudades y habitó en todas las ciudades de los amorreos, en Hesbón y todos sus dominios. Therefore, Israel took all his cities and lived in the cities of the Amorite, namely, in Heshbon and its villages.26Porque Hesbón era la ciudad de Sehón, rey de los amorreos, el cual había hecho la guerra contra el anterior rey de Moab, y le había arrancado toda su tierra hasta el Arnón. Heshbon was the city of Sihon, the king of the Amorites, who fought against the king of Moab. And he took all the land, which had been under his sovereignty, as far as Arnon.27Por eso dicen los poetas: “Id a Hesbón; y sea reedificada y fortificada la ciudad de Sehón. About this, it is said in the proverb: “Enter into Heshbon. Let the city of Sihon be established and built.28Porque salió fuego de Hesbón, llama de la plaza fuerte de Sehón, que devoró a Ar de Moab, a los señores de las alturas del Arnón. A fire has gone forth from Heshbon, a flame from the town of Sihon, and it has devoured Ar of the Moabites, and the inhabitants of the heights of Arnon.29¡Ay de ti, Moab! perdido estás, pueblo de Camos. Entregó él sus hijos a la fuga, y sus hijas al cautiverio, en mano de Sehón, rey de los amorreos. Woe to you, Moab! You are perishing, O people of Chemosh. He gave flight to his sons, and he gave the daughters into captivity, to the king of the Amorites, Sihon.30Los hemos asaeteado: Hesbón está destruida hasta Dibón; hemos hecho devastación hasta Nofah, que está cerca de Medaba.” Their yoke has been scattered from Heshbon even to Dibon. They have passed through, wearily, into Nophah, and as far as Medeba.”31Así vino a habitar Israel en la tierra de los amorreos. And so Israel lived in the land of the Amorite.32Entonces Moisés envió exploradores a Jaser; y tomaron sus aldeas, expulsando a los amorreos que allí habitaban. And Moses sent some to explore Jazer. These captured its villages and possessed its inhabitants.33Dando vuelta subieron por el camino de Basán. And they turned themselves and ascended, along the way of Bashan. And Og, the king of Bashan, met them with all his people, to fight at Edrei.34Yahvé dijo entonces a Moisés: “No le temas, porque le he entregado en tus manos, a él y a todo su pueblo y su tierra. Harás con él como hiciste con Sehón, rey de los amorreos, que habitaba en Hesbón.” And the Lord said to Moses: “Do not be afraid of him. For I have delivered him, and all his people, as well as his land, into your hand. And you shall do to him just as you did to Sihon, the king of the Amorites, the inhabitant of Heshbon.”35Y le derrotaron, a él y a sus hijos y a todo su pueblo, sin dejarle un hombre con vida; y tomaron posesión de su tierra. Therefore, they struck him down also, with his sons, and all his people, even to utter destruction, and they possessed his land.
