Proverbios 18
1Va tras sus propios deseos el que se separa (del amigo); todo su empeño consiste en pleitear. Whoever has a will to withdraw from a friend, seeks occasions; he shall be reproached at all times.2Al necio no le gusta ser sensato, se deja llevar por los gustos de su corazón. The foolish do not accept words of prudence, unless you say what is already turning in his heart.3Con la impiedad llega también la ignominia, y con la ignominia la deshonra. The impious, when he has arrived within the depths of sin, thinks little of it. But ill repute and disgrace follow him.4Aguas profundas son las palabras de la boca del hombre, torrente caudaloso la fuente de la sabiduría. Words from the mouth of a man are deep waters. And the fountain of wisdom is a torrent overflowing.5No está bien tener miramientos con el malvado, para torcer el derecho contra un justo. It is not good to accept the character of the impious, so as to turn away from true judgment.6Los labios del necio se meten en contiendas, y su boca provoca litigios. The lips of the foolish meddle in disputes. And his mouth provokes conflicts.7La boca del necio es su ruina, y sus labios son un lazo para su alma. The mouth of the foolish is his destruction, and his own lips are the ruin of his soul.8Las palabras del chismoso son como dulces bocados, penetran hasta lo más hondo de las entrañas. The words of the double-tongued seem simple. And they reach even to the interior of the gut. Fear casts down the lazy, but the souls of the effeminate shall go hungry.9Quien es remiso en sus labores, hermano es del que disipa sus bienes. Whoever is dissolute and slack in his work is the brother of him who wastes his own works.10Ciudadela fuerte es el nombre de Yahvé, en ella se refugia el justo y está seguro. The name of the Lord is a very strong tower. The just one rushes to it, and he shall be exalted.11Las riquezas son para el rico una ciudad fuerte, en su fantasía le parecen una alta muralla. The substance of the wealthy is the city of his strength, and it is like a strong wall encircling him.12Antes de la caída se engríe el corazón humano, y a la gloria precede la humillación. The heart of a man is exalted before it is crushed and humbled before it is glorified.13Quien responde antes de escuchar, muestra su insensatez y confusión. Whoever responds before he listens, demonstrates himself to be foolish and deserving of confusion.14El espíritu sostiene al hombre en la flaqueza pero al espíritu abatido ¿quién lo sostendrá? The spirit of a man sustains his weakness. Yet who can sustain a spirit that is easily angered?15El corazón prudente adquiere sabiduría, y el oído de los sabios busca doctrina. A prudent heart shall possess knowledge. And the ear of the wise seeks doctrine.16Los presentes allanan al hombre el camino, y lo llevan a la presencia de los magnates. A man’s gift expands his way and makes space for him before leaders.17Inocente parece el que primero expone su causa, pero viene su adversario y lo examina. The just is the first accuser of himself; his friend arrives and shall investigate him.18La suerte pone fin a las contiendas, y decide entre los poderosos. Casting a lot suppresses contentions and passes judgment, even among the powerful.19Un hermano ofendido (resiste) más que una fortaleza, y sus querellas son como los cerrojos de una ciudadela. A brother who is helped by a brother is like a reinforced city, and judgments are like the bars of cities.20De los frutos de su boca sacia el hombre su vientre; se harta del producto de sus labios. From the fruit of a man’s mouth shall his belly be filled. And the harvest of his own lips shall satisfy him.21La muerte y la vida están en poder de la lengua; cual sea su uso, tales serán los frutos que se comen. Death and life are in the power of the tongue. Whoever values it shall eat from its fruits.22El que halla una esposa halla cosa buena, es un favor que le viene de Yahvé. He who has found a good wife has found goodness, and he shall draw contentment from the Lord. He who expels a good wife expels goodness. But he who holds on to an adulteress is foolish and impious.23Habla el pobre suplicando, mas el rico responde con aspereza. The poor will speak with supplications. And the rich will express themselves roughly.24Amigos hay que solo sirven para perdición, pero hay también amigos más adictos que un hermano. A man amiable to society shall be more friendly than a brother.
