Proverbios 23
1Cuando te sientas a comer con uno de los grandes, mira con atención lo que te ponen delante; When you sit down to eat with a leader, pay close attention to what has been set before your face,2y aplica un cuchillo a tu garganta, si eres un hombre de gran apetito. and put a knife to your throat, if, in such a way, you could hold your soul in your own power.3No muestres avidez de sus delicadas viandas, pues son un manjar engañoso. Do not desire his foods, in which is the bread of deceit.4No te afanes por ganar riquezas; pon coto a tus deseos. Do not be willing to labor so that you may be enriched. But set limits by your prudence.5No fijes tus ojos en las (riquezas) perecederas, pues ellas se toman alas, como de águila y vuelan hacia el cielo. Do not raise your eyes toward wealth that you are not able to have. For they will make themselves wings, like those of an eagle, and they will fly in the sky.6No comas pan con el envidioso; no codicies sus delicados manjares; Do not eat with an envious man, and do not desire his foods.7porque así como los pensamientos de su alma es él. “Come y bebe”, te dice; mas su corazón no está contigo. For, like a seer and an interpreter of dreams, he presumes what he does not know. “Eat and drink,” he will say to you; and his mind is not with you.8Vomitarás el bocado que comiste, y habrás desperdiciado tus amables palabras. The foods that you had eaten, you will vomit up. And you will lose the beauty in your words.9No hables a los oídos del necio, pues despreciará tus sabios razonamientos. Do not speak into the ears of the unwise. They will despise the doctrine of your eloquence.10No trasplantes los hitos antiguos, ni pongas tu pie en los campos de los huérfanos. Do not touch the boundaries of little ones, and do not enter into the field of the fatherless.11Porque su vengador es fuerte; Él tomará contra ti la causa de ellos. For their close relative is strong, and he will judge their case against you.12Aplica tu corazón a la instrucción, y tus oídos a los dichos de la sabiduría. Let your heart enter into doctrine, and let your ears enter into words of knowledge.13No ahorres al joven la corrección; puesto que no morirá aunque le castigues con la vara. Do not be willing to take away discipline from a child. For if you strike him with the rod, he will not die.14Si lo castigas con la vara, librarás su alma del scheol. You will strike him with the rod, and so shall you deliver his soul from Hell.15Hijo mío, si tu corazón es sabio, se alegrará mi corazón; My son, if your soul will become wise, my heart will be glad with you.16y se regocijarán mis entrañas cuando tus labios hablen de cosas rectas. And my temperament will exult, when your lips will have spoken what is upright.17No envidie tu corazón a los pecadores, antes (persevera) en el temor de Yahvé en todo tiempo. Let not your heart compete with sinners. But be in the fear of the Lord all day long.18Porque hay cosas venideras, y tu esperanza no quedará burlada. For you will have hope in the end, and your expectation will not be taken away.19Escúchame, hijo mío, y sé sabio, endereza tu corazón por la (recta) senda. Listen, my son, and be wise, and direct your soul along the way.20No seas compañero de los bebedores de vino, ni de los que comen carne sin medida. Do not be willing to be in the feasts of great drinkers, nor in the carousings of those who gather to feed on flesh.21Porque los que beben y comen sin medida, se empobrecen; y la somnolencia los lleva a vestir andrajos. For those who waste time drinking, and who surrender themselves to symbols, will be consumed. And those who sleep will be clothed in rags.22Escucha a tu padre que te engendró; y no desprecies a tu madre cuando envejeciere. Listen to your father, who conceived you. And do not despise your mother, when she is old.23Adquiere la verdad, y no la vendas, tampoco la sabiduría, la doctrina e inteligencia. Purchase truth, and do not sell wisdom, or doctrine, or understanding.24Salta de placer el padre del justo, y el que engendra a un sabio tendrá en él su gozo. The father of the just exults in gladness; he who has conceived the wise will rejoice in him.25¡Alégrense, pues, tu padre y tu madre; regocíjese la que te dio a luz! Let your father and your mother be joyful, and may she who conceived you exult.26Dame, hijo mío, tu corazón, y tus ojos tengan placer en mis caminos; My son, offer me your heart, and let your eyes keep to my ways.27porque fosa honda es la ramera, y pozo angosto la mujer ajena. For a loose woman is a deep pit, and a foreign woman is a constricted well.28También ella, como un salteador, está al acecho, y aumenta el número de los prevaricadores entre los hombres. She lies in wait along the way like a robber. And the incautious one whom she sees, she will put to death.29¿Para quién los ayes? ¿Para quién los lamentos? ¿Para quién las riñas? ¿Para quién las querellas? ¿Para quién las heridas sin motivo? ¿Para quién los ojos hinchados? Who has woe? Whose father has woe? Who has quarrels? Who falls into pits? Who has wounds without cause? Who has watery eyes?30Son para los que no pueden separarse del vino, para los que andan en busca de vino aromático. Is it not those who linger over wine, and who strive to be drinking from their cups?31No mires el vino cómo rojea; cómo en la copa se refleja su color; ni cómo fluye suavemente. Do not gaze into the wine when it turns gold, when its color shines in the glass. It enters pleasantly,32Porque al fin muerde como una serpiente, y pica cual basilisco. but in the end, it will bite like a snake, and it will spread poison like a king of snakes.33Tus ojos irán tras mujeres extrañas, y tu corazón hablará cosas perversas. Your eyes will see women who are outsiders, and your heart will utter perversities.34Serás como un hombre que se acuesta en medio del mar, y duerme sobre la punta de un mástil. And you will be like someone sleeping in the middle of the sea, and like a pilot, fast asleep, who has lost his hold on the helm.35(Dirás): “Me han apaleado, y no me duele, me han golpeado, y nada siento. Cuando me despierte volveré a tomar de nuevo.” And you will say: “They have beaten me, but I did not feel pain. They have dragged me, and I did not realize it. When will I awaken and find more wine?”
