1Si haces bien, mira a quién lo haces; y tendrás mucho mérito por tu bondad. If you do good, know to whom you do it, and there will be many thanks for your good deeds.2Haz bien al justo, y lograrás una gran recompensa, sino de él, a lo menos del Señor. Do good to the just, and you will find great recompense, and if not from him, certainly from the Lord.3No lo pasará bien el que de continuo hace mal, y no da limosnas; porque el Altísimo aborrece a los pecadores; y usa de misericordia con los que se arrepienten. For there is no good for someone who is always occupied in evil, or who does not give alms. For the Most High holds hatred for sinners, but he takes pity on the repentant.4Sé tú liberal con el hombre misericordioso, y no patrocines al pecador; porque Él dará su merecido a los impíos y a los pecadores, reservándolos para el día de la venganza. Give to the merciful, and you should not assist the sinner. For the impious and the sinner will be repaid with the vengeance being held for them on the day of retribution.5Sé liberal con el hombre de bien, y no apoyes al pecador. Give to the good, but you should not receive from a sinner.6Haz bien al humilde, y no concedas dones al impío; impide que se le dé de comer, para que no se alce sobre ti con lo mismo que le das. Do good to the humble, but you should not give to the impious; withhold your bread, do not give it to him, otherwise he may overpower you with it.7Porque será doble mal el que reportarás por todo el bien que le hicieres; pues odia el Altísimo a los pecadores, y tomará venganza de los impíos. For you will find twice the evil for all the good you will have done to him. For the Most High also holds hatred for sinners, and he will repay vengeance to the impious.8No se conoce el amigo en la prosperidad; y en la adversidad no quedará oculto el enemigo. A friend will not be known in good times, and an enemy will not be hidden in adversity.9En la prosperidad del hombre sus enemigos andan tristes; y en la adversidad se conoce quién es amigo. By the good fortune of a man, his enemies are grieved; and by his misfortune, a friend is revealed.10Nunca te fíes de tu enemigo; porque como un vaso de cobre, cría cardenillo su malicia. You should never trust your enemy. For his wickedness rusts like a brass pot.11Aunque haciendo de humilde ande cabizbajo, tú está sobre aviso, y recátate de él. And if he humbles himself and goes about bowed down, increase your alertness and guard yourself from him.12No te le pongas a tu lado, ni se siente a tu diestra; no sea que volviéndose contra ti, tire a ocupar tu puesto; y al fin caigas en cuenta de lo que digo, y te traspasen el corazón mis advertencias. You should not sit down anywhere near him, nor should you allow him to sit at your right hand, lest perhaps he may turn toward your place, and seek your seat, and then, in the very end, you would understand my words and be stung by my sermon.13¿Quién tendrá compasión del encantador mordido de la serpiente, ni de todos que se acercan a las fieras? Así será del que se acompaña con un hombre inicuo, y se halla envuelto en sus pecados. Who will take pity on an enchanter struck by a serpent, or on someone who draws near to wild beasts? And so it is with one who keeps company with an iniquitous man and is involved in his sins.14Algún tiempo estará contigo; mas si declina tu fortuna, no te sostendrá. For one hour, he will abide with you. But if you begin to turn aside, he will not permit it.15El enemigo tiene la miel en sus labios; mas en su corazón está tramando cómo dar contigo en la fosa. An enemy speaks sweetly with his lips, but in his heart, he waits in ambush, so that he may throw you into a pit.16Derrama lágrima de sus ojos el enemigo; pero si halla ocasión, no se hartará de sangre; An enemy has tears in his eyes. But if he finds an opportunity, he will not be satisfied with blood.17y si te sobreviene algún mal, hallarás que él es su primer origen. And if misfortunes happen upon you, you will find him there first.18Llorando están los ojos del enemigo; pero en ademán de querer ayudarte te dará un traspié. An enemy has tears in his eyes, but while pretending to help you, he will dig under your feet.19Meneará su cabeza, y dará palmadas, y hablando mucho entre dientes, mudará su rostro. He will shake his head, and clap his hands, and whisper much, and change his expression.
