¹El sabio indagará la sabiduría de todos los antiguos, y hará estudio de los profetas. A wise man will seek the wisdom of all the ancients, and he will be occupied in the prophets.²Recogerá las explicaciones de los varones ilustres, y penetrara asimismo las agudezas de las parábolas. He will preserve the words of renowned men, and he will enter with them into the subtleties of parables.³Sacará el sentido oculto de los proverbios, y se ocupará en lo misterioso de las parábolas. He will search for the hidden meanings of proverbs, and he will become familiar with the mysteries of parables.⁴Asistirá en medio de los magnates, y se presentará delante del que gobierna. He will minister in the midst of great men, and he will appear in the sight of the foremost leader.⁵Pasará a países de naciones extrañas, para reconocer aquello que hay de bueno y de malo entre los hombres. He will pass through the land of foreign nations. For he will test good and evil among men.⁶Despertándose muy de mañana, dirigirá su corazón al Señor que le creó, y hará oración en la presencia del Altísimo. At first light, he will offer his heart with watchfulness to the Lord who made him, and he will pray in the sight of the Most High.⁷Abrirá su boca para orar, y pedirá perdón de sus pecados. He will open his mouth in prayer, and he will make supplication for his offenses.⁸Porque si aquel gran Señor quisiere, le llenará del espíritu de inteligencia, For if the great Lord is willing, he will fill him with the Spirit of understanding.⁹y él derramará, como lluvia, palabras de sabiduría, y en la oración dará gracias al Señor. And he will send forth the eloquence of his wisdom like rain showers, and in his prayer, he will confess to the Lord.¹⁰Pondrá en práctica sus consejos y reglas, y meditará sus ocultos juicios. And he will direct his counsel and his discipline, and he will meditate on his mysteries.¹¹Expondrá públicamente la doctrina que ha aprendido, y se gloriará en la Ley del Testamento del Señor. He will make the discipline of his doctrine clear, and he will glory in the law of the covenant of the Lord.¹²Celebrarán muchos su sabiduría, la cual nunca jamás será olvidada. Many persons will together praise his wisdom, and it will never be abolished, for all ages.¹³No perecerá su memoria, y su nombre será repetido de generación en generación. The memory of him will not fade away, and his name will be sought from generation to generation.¹⁴Las naciones pregonarán su sabiduría, y la Iglesia celebrará sus alabanzas. The peoples will declare his wisdom, and the Church will announce his praise.¹⁵Mientras viva, tendrá más nombradía que mil; y si descansare hallará en esto su provecho. While he remains, he leaves behind a name greater than a thousand, and when he will rest, it will be to his benefit.¹⁶Yo seguiré todavía dando consejos, porque me siento poseído como de un sagrado entusiasmo. I will meditate further, so that I may explain. For I have been filled with a passion.¹⁷Una voz dice: Escuchadme, vosotros que sois prosapia de Dios, y brotad como rosales, plantados junto a las corrientes de las aguas. In a voice, he says: Listen to me, divine fruits. You shall bear fruit, like roses planted beside streams of waters.¹⁸Esparcid suaves olores, como el Líbano. You shall have a sweet fragrance, like the cedars of Lebanon.¹⁹Floreced como azucenas; despedid fragancia, y echad graciosas ramas; entonad cánticos de alabanza, y bendecid al Señor en sus obras. Blossom with flowers, like the lily, and diffuse a fragrance, and sprout leaves in grace, and give praise with canticles, and bless the Lord in his works.²⁰Engrandeced su nombre; alabadle con la voz de vuestros labios, y con cánticos de vuestra lengua, y al son de las cítaras; y diréis así en loor suyo: Give magnificence to his name, and confess to him with the voice of your lips and with the canticles of your mouth and with stringed instruments. And in so praising him, you will confess:²¹Todas las obras del Señor son muy buenas. All the works of the Lord are very good.²²A una voz suya se contuvo el agua como si fuera una masa, y quedó como en un depósito a un dicho de su boca. At his word, the waters stood still, as if piled together. And at the words of his mouth, the waters were contained, as if in basins of water.²³Porque a su orden se cumple su voluntad, y la salud que Él da es perfecta. For it is made pleasing by his precept, and there is no decrease in his salvation.²⁴Están a su vista las acciones de todos los hombres, y no hay cosa escondida a sus ojos. The works of all flesh are in his sight, and there is nothing hidden from his eyes.²⁵Él alcanza a ver los siglos todos; y no hay cosa que sea maravillosa para Él. His gaze is from eternity to eternity, and nothing is a wonder in his sight.²⁶No hay que decir: ¿Qué viene a ser esto? ¿O para qué es esto otro? porque todas las cosas servirán a su tiempo. Let it not be said: “What is this?” or, “What is that?” For all things will be sought in their time.²⁷Su bendición es como un río que inunda. His blessing has overflowed like a river.²⁸Como el diluvio empapó en agua la tierra, así la ira del Señor será la suerte de las naciones que no le buscaren. In the same way that a flood inundates the dry land, so also will his wrath inherit the peoples that have not sought him.²⁹Así como Él convirtió las aguas en una sequedad, y quedó enjuta la tierra, y abrió un camino cómodo para que pasasen; así los pecadores por un efecto de su ira hallarán su tropiezo. In the same way that he turned the waters into dry land, and made the earth dry, and just as his ways have been directed for their journey, so also will sinners stumble before his wrath.³⁰Los bienes fueron desde el principio creados para los buenos; pero para los malos los bienes y los males. From the beginning, good things were created for those who are good, and similarly, good and evil things are for those who are wicked.³¹Lo que principalmente se necesita para el uso de la vida humana, es agua, fuego y hierro, sal, leche, y harina de trigo, miel y racimos de uvas, aceite y vestido. The principal things necessary for the life of men are: water, fire, and iron, salt, milk, and flour for bread, and honey, and the grape cluster, and oil, and clothing.³²Así como todas estas cosas son un bien para los buenos; así para los impíos y pecadores se convierten en mal. All these things will be used for good by those who are holy, but they will be turned to evil use by the impious and by sinners.³³Hay espíritus creados para ministros de la venganza, los cuales en su furor aumentan los suplicios. There are spirits that have been created for vengeance, and they strengthen their torments by their fury.³⁴En el tiempo de la consumación derraman su fuerza y aplacan la cólera de Aquel que los creó. In the time of the consummation, they will pour forth their strength. And they will appease the fury of the One who made them.³⁵El fuego, el pedrisco, el hambre, y la muerte, todas estas cosas se hicieron para castigo; Fire, hail, famine, and death: all these were created for vengeance.³⁶como los dientes de las fieras, los escorpiones, y las serpientes, y la espada vengadora que extermina a los impíos. The teeth of wild beasts, and scorpions, and serpents, and the spear: all these take vengeance upon the impious, unto utter destruction.³⁷Se regocijan en cumplir sus mandamientos, y están aparejadas sobre la tierra para cuando fuere menester, y llegado el tiempo ejecutan puntualmente cuanto se les ordene. At his command, they will feast. And they will be prepared upon the earth until they are needed. And in their time, they will not ignore his word.³⁸Y así desde el principio estoy persuadido, y lo he meditado, y pensado, y dejado por escrito For this reason, from the beginning, I was strengthened, and I have meditated, and I have considered, and I have put these things in writing.³⁹que todas las obras de Dios son buenas, y cada una de ellas a su tiempo hará su servicio. All the works of the Lord are good, and he will provide for each work in its own hour.⁴⁰No hay que decir: esto es peor que aquello; pues se verá que todas las cosas serán aprobadas a su tiempo. Let it not be said: “This is worse than that.” For all things will be tested in their time.⁴¹Y ahora con todo el corazón, y a boca llena alabad a una, y bendecid el nombre del Señor. And now, with the whole heart and mouth, give praise to him, and bless the name of the Lord.
