¹El alto firmamento es la hermosura de Él; la belleza del cielo es una muestra de su gloria. The firmament on high is his beauty; it is the beauty of heaven in a vision of glory.²El sol, al salir, le anuncia con su presencia, ese admirable instrumento, obra del Excelso. The sun, at its appearance, announces its journey; it is an instrument of wonder, a work of the Most High.³Al medio día quema la tierra; — ¿quién puede resistir de cara el ardor de sus rayos?— como quien mantiene la fragua encendida para las labores que piden fuego muy ardiente. At midday, it scorches the earth. And in the presence of its heat, who would be able to endure? It is like the custodian of a furnace in its works of heat.⁴El sol abrasa tres veces más los montes, vibrando rayos de fuego, con cuyo resplandor deslumbra los ojos. In three ways, the sun acts: scorching the mountains, emitting fiery rays, and shining with its beams that can blind the eyes.⁵Grande es el Señor que lo creó, y de orden suya acelera su curso. Great is the Lord who made it, and at his word, it hurries on its journey.⁶También la luna con todas sus mutaciones indica los tiempos, y señala los años. And the moon, in all its phases, serves to mark the seasons and to be a sign of the times.⁷La luna señala los días festivos; luminar, que luego que llega a su plenitud comienza a menguar; From the moon is the sign of a feast day; it is a light which diminishes at its consummation.⁸del cual ha tomado nombre el mes; crece maravillosamente hasta estar llena. A month is named according to its phases, increasing wonderfully at its culmination.⁹Un ejército hay en las alturas, el cual brilla gloriosamente en el firmamento del cielo. It is an instrument of the armies on high, shining gloriously in the firmament of heaven.¹⁰El resplandor de las estrellas es la hermosura del cielo; el Señor desde lo alto ilumina al mundo. The glory of the stars is the beauty of heaven; the Lord illuminates the world from on high.¹¹A una palabra del Santo están prontas a sus órdenes, y jamás se cansan de hacer de centinela. At the words of the Holy One, they stand for judgment, and they will never fail in their vigilance.¹²Contempla el arco iris, y bendice al que lo hizo; es muy hermoso su resplandor; Consider the rainbow, and bless the One who made it; it is very beautiful in its splendor.¹³ciñe al cielo con el cerco glorioso; las manos del Altísimo lo han formado. It encompasses the heavens with the circle of its glory; the hands of the Most High made it appear.¹⁴Con su mandato hace venir pronto la nieve, y despide con velocidad sus relámpagos justicieros. By his order, he hastens the snow, and he spurs on the lightning to express his judgment.¹⁵Por eso se abren sus depósitos, de donde vuelan las nubes a manera de aves. In like manner, his storehouses are opened, and the clouds fly out like birds.¹⁶Con su gran poder condensa las nubes, y se desmenuzan las piedras de granizo. By his greatness, he has positioned the clouds, and the hailstones have been broken.¹⁷A una mirada suya se conmueven los montes, y a su querer sopla el ábrego. At his glance, the mountains will be shaken, and by his will, the south wind will blow.¹⁸La tierra se conmueve por la voz de su trueno, el huracán del norte y el remolino de los vientos. The voice of his thunder will reverberate through the earth, by a storm from the north, and by a gathering of the whirlwind.¹⁹Él esparce la nieve, la cual desciende como las aves que bajan para descansar, y como las langostas que se echan sobre la tierra. And like the birds landing in a flock upon the earth, he sends down the snow; and its descent is like the arrival of a swarm of locusts.²⁰Los ojos admiran la belleza de su blancura, y las inundaciones llenan de espanto el corazón. The eye is in wonder at the beauty of its whiteness, and the heart is astonished at its falling.²¹Derrama como sal sobre la tierra la escarcha, la cual helándose se vuelve como puntas de abrojos. He will pour out frost like salt upon the earth. And when it freezes, it will become like the tops of thistles.²²Al soplo del viento frío del norte se congela el agua en cristal; el cual cubre toda reunión de aguas, y pone encima de ellas una como coraza. The cold north wind blows, and the water freezes into crystals; it will rest upon every gathering of water, and it will clothe the water like a breastplate.²³Devora los montes, quema los desiertos y seca toda verdura como con fuego. And it will devour the mountains, and burn the wilderness, and extinguish the greenery, like a fire.²⁴El remedio de todo esto es una nube que aparezca luego, y un rocío que sobrevenga templado le hará amansar. Relief for all is in the hurried arrival of a cloud. And the lowly dew will arrive to meet the heat and overpower it.²⁵A una palabra suya calma Él los vientos, y con solo su querer sosiega el mar profundo; en medio del cual plantó el Señor las islas. At his word, the wind grows quiet, and by his thought, he appeases the abyss, for the Lord has planted islands in it.²⁶Que los que navegan el mar, cuenten sus peligros; y al escucharlos con nuestros propios oídos, quedaremos atónitos. Let those who navigate the sea describe its perils. And when we have heard it with our ears, we will wonder.²⁷Allí hay obras grandes y admirables, varios géneros de animales, bestias de todas especies y creaturas monstruosas. There are illustrious and wondrous works: the various kinds of wild animals, and all manner of cattle, and the great creatures of the sea.²⁸Por Él fue prescrito el fin a que caminan, y por su mandato se puso todo en orden. Through him, the end of their journey is confirmed, and by his word, all things fit together.²⁹Por mucho que digamos, nos quedará mucho que decir; mas la suma de cuanto se puede decir es que Él mismo está en todas las cosas. We can say much, and yet still lack for words. But the consummation of our words is this: He is in all things.³⁰Para darle gloria, ¿qué es lo que valemos nosotros? Pues siendo Él todopoderoso, es superior a todas sus obras. What would we be able to do to glorify him? For the Almighty himself is above all his own works.³¹Terrible es el Señor, y grande sobremanera, y su poder es admirable. The Lord is terrible, and exceedingly great, and his power is wonderful.³²Glorificad al Señor cuanto más pudiereis, que todavía quedará Él superior; siendo como es prodigiosa su magnificencia. Glorify the Lord as much as you are able, yet still he will far exceed this. For his magnificence is beyond wonder.³³Bendecid al Señor, ensalzadle cuanto podáis; porque superior es a toda alabanza. Bless the Lord and exalt him, as much as you are able. But he is beyond all praise.³⁴Para ensalzarle, recoged todas vuestras fuerzas; y no os canséis, que jamás llegaréis al cabo. When you exalt him, use all your ability, and do not cease in this labor. For you can never comprehend him.³⁵¿Quién le ha visto a fin de poderle describir? ¿Y quién le glorificará tanto como Él es desde el principio? Who will see him and explain? And who will magnify him, as he is from the beginning?³⁶Muchas son sus obras que ignoramos, mayores que las ya dichas; pues es poco lo que de sus obras sabemos. There are many things, hidden from us, which are greater than these things. For we have seen but a few of his works.³⁷Pero todo lo hizo el Señor; y a los que viven virtuosamente les da la sabiduría. But the Lord has made all things, and he has given wisdom to those who act with piety.
