¹Oración de Jesús, hijo de Sirac. Te glorificaré, oh Señor y Rey; a Ti alabaré, oh Dios Salvador mío. The prayer of Jesus, the son of Sirach: I will confess to you, O Lord and King, and I will give praise to you, O God my Savior.²Gracias tributaré a tu nombre, porque has sido mi auxiliador y mi protector. I will acknowledge your name. For you have been my Helper and Protector.³Y has librado mi cuerpo de la perdición, del lazo tendido por la lengua maligna y de los labios que urden la mentira; y delante de mis acusadores te has manifestado mi defensor. And you have freed my body from perdition, from the snare of the iniquitous tongue, and from the lips of those who forge lies. And you have been my Helper in the sight of those who stood nearby.⁴Por tu gran misericordia, de la cual tomas nombre, me has librado de los que rugían, ya prontos a devorarme; And you have freed me according to the multitude of the mercy of your name: from those who roared and prepared to devour,⁵de las manos de aquellos que buscaban cómo quitarme la vida, y del tropel de tribulaciones que me cercaron; from the hands of those who sought my life, and from the gates of tribulation that surrounded me,⁶de la violencia de las llamas entre las cuales me vi encerrado y en cuyo fuego no fui abrasado; from the oppression of the flames that surrounded me, and so I was not burned in the midst of the fire,⁷del profundo seno del infierno, de los labios impuros, del falso testimonio; de un rey inicuo y de la lengua injusta. from the depths of the bowels of hell, and from the defiled tongue, and from lying words, from an iniquitous king, and from an unjust tongue.⁸Mi alma alabará al Señor hasta la muerte; My soul shall praise the Lord, even unto death.⁹pues mi vida estuvo a pique de caer en el infierno. For my life was drawing near to hell below.¹⁰Me cercaron por todas partes, y no había quien me prestase socorro; volvía los ojos en busca del amparo de los hombres, y no lo había. And they surrounded me on every side. And there was no one who would help me. I looked around for the assistance of men, and there was none.¹¹Me acordé, oh Señor, de tu misericordia, y de tus obras desde el principio del mundo; Then I remembered your mercy, O Lord, and your works, which are from the very beginning.¹²y cómo salvas, Señor a los que en Ti esperan, y los libras de las naciones. For you rescue those who persevere for you, O Lord, and you free them from the hands of the Gentiles.¹³Tú ensalzaste mi casa sobre la tierra, y yo te supliqué que me librases de la muerte, que todo lo disuelve. You exalted my habitation upon the earth, and I made supplication that death would pass away.¹⁴Invoqué al Señor, Padre de mi Señor, que no me desamparase en el tiempo de mi tribulación, y mientras dominaren los soberbios. I called upon the Lord, the Father of my Lord, so that he would not abandon me in the day of my tribulation, nor in the time of arrogance without assistance.¹⁵Alabaré sin cesar tu nombre, y le celebraré con acciones de gracias; pues fue oída mi oración. I will praise your name unceasingly, and I will praise it with thanksgiving, for my prayer was heeded.¹⁶Me libraste de la perdición, y me sacaste a salvo en el tiempo calamitoso. And you freed me from perdition, and you rescued me from the time of iniquity.¹⁷Por tanto te glorificaré, te cantaré alabanzas, y bendeciré el nombre del Señor. Because of this, I will give thanks and praise to you, and I will bless the name of the Lord.¹⁸Siendo yo todavía mozo, antes que anduviese errante, busqué abiertamente la sabiduría con mis oraciones. When I was still young, before I wandered astray, I sought wisdom openly in my prayer.¹⁹La estaba pidiendo en el atrio del Templo, y la buscaré hasta mi último aliento. Ella brotó su flor, como la uva temprana. I asked for her before the temple, and even to the very end, I will inquire after her. And she flourished like a newly-ripened grape.²⁰Se regocijó con ella mi corazón; mis pies tomaron el camino recto; desde mi juventud iba yo en seguimiento de ella. My heart rejoiced in her. My feet walked in the right path. From my youth, I pursued her.²¹Apliqué un tanto mi oído, y la percibí. I bent my ear a little and accepted her.²²Acopié mucha sabiduría en mi mente, e hice en ella muchos progresos. I found much wisdom within myself, and I benefited greatly by her.²³Al que me dio la sabiduría tributaré yo la gloria. I will give glory to him who gives wisdom to me.²⁴Me resolví, por lo tanto, a ponerla en práctica; fui celoso del bien, y no me avergonzaré. For I have decided that I should act according to wisdom. I have been zealous for what is good, and so I will not be confounded.²⁵Por ella ha combatido mi alma, y poniéndola por obra cobré fuerza. My soul has struggled for wisdom, and in doing so, I have been confirmed.²⁶Levanté mis manos a lo alto, y lloré mi ignorancia. I extended my hands on high, and I mourned my ignorance of her.²⁷Hacia ella enderecé el alma mía; y la hallé en el conocimiento. I directed my soul toward her, and I found her within knowledge.²⁸Con ella desde luego fui dueño de mi corazón, por lo que no seré abandonado. From the beginning, I held my heart to wisdom. Because of this, I will not be forsaken.²⁹Acongojado anduvo mi corazón en busca de ella; por lo tanto gozaré de esta rica herencia. My stomach was stirred up while seeking her. Because of her, I will hold a good possession.³⁰El Señor me dio en recompensa una lengua, y con ella le alabaré. The Lord has given me a tongue as my reward, and I will praise him with it.³¹Acercaos a mí, oh ignorantes, y reuníos en la casa de la enseñanza. Draw near to me, you who are untaught, and gather yourselves into the house of discipline.³²¿Por qué os detenéis todavía? ¿Y qué respondéis a esto, estando vuestras almas ardiendo de sed? Why are you reluctant? And what do you have to say about these things? Your souls are exceedingly thirsty!³³Abrí mi boca y os dije: Venid a comprarla sin dinero. I have opened my mouth, and I have spoken. Buy wisdom for yourselves without silver,³⁴Someted a su yugo vuestro cuello, y reciba vuestra alma la instrucción; pues fácil es el encontrarla. and subject your neck to her yoke, and let your soul accept her discipline. For she is close enough to be found.³⁵Mirad con vuestros ojos lo poco que me he fatigado, y cómo he adquirido mucho descanso. See with your own eyes how I have labored only a little, and have found much rest for myself.³⁶Recibid la enseñanza como un caudal de plata, y poseeréis con ella un inmenso tesoro de oro. Take up discipline, as if it were a great sum of money, and possess an abundance of gold in her.³⁷Alégrese vuestra alma en la misericordia de Dios; y alabándole a Él, nunca quedaréis confundidos. Let your soul rejoice in his mercy. For you will not be confounded by his praise.³⁸Haced lo que debéis hacer antes que el tiempo pase; y Él os dará a su tiempo vuestra recompensa. Accomplish your work before the time. And he will give you your reward in his time.
