Sabiduría 14
1Asimismo piensa otro en navegar, y estando para surcar las encrespadas olas, invoca un leño más endeble que aquel que le lleva. Again, another, thinking to sail, and beginning to make his voyage through the raging waves, calls upon a piece of wood more fragile than the wood that carries him.2Este leño lo inventó la codicia de ganar, y lo fabricó el artífice con su saber. For this is what desire has contrived to be acquired, and the craftsman has formed its understanding.3Mas tu providencia, oh Padre, lleva el timón; por cuanto aun en medio del mar le abriste camino, y le diste paso segurísimo por entre las olas; But your providence, O Father, governs, because you have provided for both a way in the sea and a very reliable path among the waves,4demostrando que eres poderoso para salvar de todo riesgo, aunque alguno sin arte se meta en el mar. revealing that you are able to save out of all things, even if someone were to go to sea without skill.5Pero a fin de que no quedasen inútiles las obras de tu sabiduría, por eso los hombres fían sus vidas a un débil leño, y atravesando el mar sobre un barco llegan a salvo. But, so that the works of your wisdom might not be empty, therefore, men trust their souls even to a little piece of wood, and, crossing over the sea by raft, they are set free.6De esta suerte también al principio, cuando merecieron los soberbios gigantes, una barca fue el refugio de la esperanza de toda la tierra; barca que siendo gobernada por tu mano, transmitió al mundo semilla de posteridad. But, from the beginning, when the proud giants were perishing, the hope of the world, fleeing by boat, gave back to future ages a seed of birth, which was governed by your hand.7Porque bendito el leño que sirve a la justicia; For blessed is the wood through which justice is made.8pero maldito el leño de un ídolo hecho de mano, tanto él como su artífice; este porque le fabricó, y aquel porque no siendo más que una cosa frágil recibió el nombre de Dios. But, through the hand that makes the idol, both it, and he who made it, is accursed: he, indeed, because it has been served by him, and it, because, though it is fragile, it is called ‘god.’9Puesto que a Dios le son igualmente aborrecibles el impío y su impiedad. But the impious and his impiety are similarly offensive to God.10Por donde así la obra hecha como el hacedor serán castigados. For that which is made, together with him who made it, will suffer torments.11Y por eso no se perdonará a los ídolos de las naciones; por cuanto siendo creaturas de Dios se hicieron abominación, tentación para las almas de los hombres, y lazo para los pies de los insensatos. Because of this, and according to the idolatries of the nations, there will be no refuge, for the things created by God have been made into hatred, and into a temptation to the souls of men, and into a snare for the feet of the foolish.12Pues la invención de los ídolos fue el origen de la fornicación, y su hallazgo la corrupción de la vida. For the beginning of fornication is the search for idols, and from their invention comes corruption of life.13Porque ni los había al principio, ni los habrá siempre. For they neither existed from the beginning, nor will they exist forever.14Fueron introducidos en el mundo por la vanidad de los hombres, y con esto vendrá muy pronto el fin de ellos. For by the great emptiness of men they came into the world, and therefore their end is soon discovered.15Hallándose un padre traspasado de acerbo dolor por la prematura muerte de su hijo, formó de él un retrato; y al que como hombre acababa de morir, comenzó luego a honrarle como a dios, y estableció entre sus criados ceremonias y sacrificios. For a father, embittered with the suffering of grief, made an image of his son, who had been suddenly taken away from him, and then, he who had died as a man, now begins to be worshiped as if a god, and so rites and sacrifices are established among his servants.16Después con el discurso del tiempo, tomando cuerpo aquella impía costumbre, el error vino a ser observado como ley, y se adoraban los simulacros por mandato de los tiranos. Then, in the course of time, iniquity gains strength within this erroneous custom, so that this error has been observed as if it were a law, and this figment has been worshiped at the command of tyrants.17Y así hacían traer desde lejos los retratos de quiénes no podían los hombres honrar personalmente por estar distantes; y exponían a la vista de todos la imagen del rey, a quien querían tributar honores, a fin de reverenciarle con su culto, como si estuviera presente. And those, whom men could not openly honor because they were far off, a likeness of them was carried from far off, and from it they made a similar image of the king that they wanted to honor, so that, by their solicitude, they might worship he who was absent, just as if he were present.18La extremada habilidad del artífice atrajo a los ignorantes a este culto; Yet, it passes into their care, and those whom they did not know, they love because of the excellence of the artist.19porque deseando complacer al que le hacía trabajar, empleó todos los esfuerzos del arte para sacar más al vivo la imagen. For he, wishing to please the one who hired him, embellished his art, so as to fashion a better likeness.20Con eso, embelesado el vulgo con la belleza de la obra, comenzó a calificar por un dios al que poco antes era honrado como un hombre. But the multitude of men, brought together by the beauty of the work, now considered him to be a god, whom they had formerly honored as a man.21Y este fue el error del género humano; pues los hombres, o por satisfacer a un afecto suyo, o a los reyes, dieron a las piedras y leños el nombre incomunicable. And this was the deception of human life: that men, serving either their own inclination or their kings, assigned the unutterable name to stones and wood.22Ni se contentaron con errar en orden al conocimiento de Dios, sino que viviendo sumamente arruinados por su ignorancia, dieron el nombre de paz a un sinnúmero de muy grandes males. And it was not enough for them to go astray concerning the knowledge of God, but also, while living in a great war of ignorance, they call so many and such great evils ‘peace.’23Pues ya sacrificando sus propios hijos, ya ofreciendo sacrificios entre tinieblas, o celebrando vigilias llenas de delirios, For either they sacrifice their own sons, or they make dark sacrifices, or they hold vigils full of madness,24no respetan las vidas, ni la pureza de los matrimonios, sino que unos a otros se matan por celos, o con sus adulterios se contristan. so that now they neither protect life, nor preserve a clean marriage, but one kills another through envy, or grieves him by adultery.25Por todas partes se ve efusión de sangre, homicidios, hurtos y engaños, corrupción, infidelidad, alborotos, perjurios, vejación de los buenos, And all things are mixed together: blood, murder, theft and fraud, corruption and infidelity, disturbances and perjury, disorder within good things,26olvido de Dios, contaminación de las almas, trastorno de la naturaleza, inconstancia de los matrimonios, desórdenes de adulterio y de lascivia; forgetfulness of God, pollution of souls, alteration of procreation, inconstancy of marriage, unnatural adultery and homosexuality.27siendo el abominable culto de los ídolos la causa, y el principio y fin de todos los males; For the worship of unspeakable idols is the cause, and the beginning and the end, of all evil.28porque o hacen locuras en sus fiestas, o a lo menos fingen oráculos falsos, o viven en la injusticia, o perjuran con facilidad; For they either act with madness while happy, or they insistently speak wild lies, or they live unjustly, or they are quick to commit perjury.29como que confiados en sus ídolos, que son creaturas inanimadas, no temen que por jurar en falso les venga ningún daño. For, while they trust in idols, which are without a soul, vowing evil, they hope not to be harmed themselves.30Mas por entrambas cosas tendrán su justo castigo: porque entregados a sus ídolos sintieron mal de Dios, y porque juraron injustamente y con dolo, menospreciando la justicia. Therefore, from both sides it will fittingly happen, because they have thought evil of God, paying attention to idols, and because they have sworn unjustly, in guile despising justice.31Pues no el poder de aquellos por quienes juran, sino la venganza sobre los pecadores es lo que persigue siempre la prevaricación de los injustos. For swearing is not virtue, but sinning always comes around to a punishment according to the transgression of the unjust.
