1Mas tus santos gozaban de una grandísima luz; oían la voz de aquellos pero sin verlos. Y te daban a Ti la gloria de que no padeciesen las mismas angustias, But your saints were your greatest light, and they heard your voice, but did not see your form. And because they themselves did not also suffer the same things, they praised you greatly.2tributándote gracias porque no eran maltratados, como antes lo habían sido; y te pedían la merced de que subsistiese esta diferencia. And those who were wounded before, gave thanks, because they were no longer being wounded, and because they had petitioned for this gift, that there would be this difference.3Por lo cual al ir por un camino desconocido tuvieron por guía una luminosa columna de fuego, y les diste un sol que no los incomodaba cuando descansaban. Because of this, they had a burning column of fire as a guide on the unknown way, and you displayed a harmless sun of a good hospitality.4Bien merecían los otros el quedar privados de la luz, y padecer una cárcel de tinieblas, ya que tenían encarcelados a tus hijos, por cuyo medio había de ser dada al mundo la luz inmaculada de la Ley. The others, indeed, deserved to be deprived of the light and to endure a prison of darkness, who watched for an opportunity to imprison your sons, by whom the incorruptible light of the law was beginning to be given to future generations.5Cuando resolvieron quitar la vida a los infantes de los justos, y Tú libraste para castigo suyo uno de ellos que había sido expuesto, les quitaste muchísimos de sus hijos; y a ellos mismos los ahogaste en las recias aguas. When they thought to kill the babes of the just, one son having been exposed and set free, to their disgrace, you took away a multitude of their sons and destroyed them all together in a mighty water.6Fue aquella noche previamente anunciada a nuestros padres, para que conociendo la verdad de las promesas juradas, a que habían dado crédito, estuviesen más confiados. For that night was known beforehand by our fathers, so that, knowing the truth of the oaths in which they had trusted, they might be more peaceful in their souls.7Y con esto vio tu pueblo, a un mismo tiempo, la salvación de los justos, y el exterminio de los malvados. Yet your people received not only the salvation of the just, but also the destruction of the unjust.8Que así como castigaste a los enemigos, así llamándonos a nosotros, nos ensalzaste. For just as you wounded our adversaries, so also did you greatly esteem calling us forth.9Porque los justos, hijos de los santos, te ofrecían en secreto el sacrificio, y concordes establecieron esta ley de justicia, que los justos se ofrecían a recibir igualmente los bienes como los males, cantando ya los himnos de los patriarcas. For the just children of goodness were secretly offering sacrifice, and in agreement they administered the law of justice, so that both good and bad would be able to receive justice, and so that you might now approve of their chanting to the father.10Mientras tanto resonaban los desentonados gritos de los enemigos, y se oía el llanto de los que se lamentaban por la muerte de los niños; On the other hand, a dissimilar voice was resounding from the enemies, and a lamentable wailing was heard for the children who were being cried over.11estando afligidos con la misma pena el esclavo y el amo, y padeciendo el mismo castigo el hombre plebeyo que el rey. But the same punishment afflicted the servant with the master, and the common man endured the same as the king.12Todos igualmente tenían innumerables muertos, que habían perecido con el mismo género de muerte; ni ya bastaban los vivos para enterrarlos; pues en un momento fue extirpada la más noble porción de su prole. Therefore, all were the same, with one name for death, and the dead were innumerable. For neither were the living sufficient to bury the dead, because, with a single effort, their most illustrious nation was exterminated.13Entonces los que a ninguna cosa creían, por engaño de los hechiceros, luego que acaeció el exterminio de los primogénitos, reconocieron que aquel era el pueblo de Dios. For they would not believe anything because of the drugs; then truly, at the beginning, when the extermination of the firstborn happened, they pledged the people to belong to God.14Cuando un tranquilo silencio ocupaba todas las cosas, y la noche, siguiendo su curso, se hallaba en la mitad del camino, For, when a quiet silence surrounded all things, and when the course of the night was passing the middle of its journey,15tu omnipotente palabra, desde el cielo, desde tu real solio, cual terrible campeón, se lanzó en medio de la tierra condenada al exterminio. your almighty word from heaven leapt down from your royal throne, as a fierce warrior in the midst of the land of extermination,16Llevaba por aguda espada tu irresistible decreto, y a su llegada lo llenó todo de la muerte, y estando sobre la tierra alcanzaba hasta el cielo. as a sharp sword carrying your unfeigned authority, and standing, filled all things with death, and, standing on the earth, reached all the way up to touch heaven.17Entonces visiones de sueños funestos los llenaron de turbación, y los sobrecogieron imprevistos temores. Then, incessant visions of nightmares disturbed them, and unexpected fears overcame them.18Y arrojados medio muertos, unos en una parte, otros en otra, mostraban la causa de su muerte. And another was thrown down elsewhere half-alive; and so, by means of that which was dying, the cause of death was revealed.19Porque los mismos fantasmas que los habían turbado, los habían antes advertido de esto, a fin de que no muriesen sin saber la causa del mal que padecían. For the visions that disturbed them had forewarned of these things, lest they should perish and not know why they suffered these evils.20También los justos estuvieron un tiempo en peligro de muerte; y la muchedumbre experimentó calamidades en el desierto; pero no duró mucho tu enojo. Yet, at that time, the trial of death touched even the just, and there was a disturbance of the multitude in the wilderness, but your wrath did not continue for long.21Porque acudió a toda prisa un varón irreprensible a interceder por el pueblo. Embrazó el escudo de su ministerio, y presentando la oración con el incienso de la expiación, contrastó a la ira, y puso fin al azote, mostrando ser siervo tuyo. For a blameless man, prospering, is to be entreated for your people, bringing forth the shield of your service, through prayer and incense, making prayerful supplication, he withstands anger, and so establishes an end to the necessary difficulty, revealing that he is your servant.22Calmó luego el desorden, y no con las fuerzas del cuerpo, ni con el poder de las armas, sino con la sola palabra desarmó al que le afligía, haciendo presentes los juramentos y alianza hecha con los patriarcas; Yet he outlasted the disturbance, not by virtue of the body, nor by force of arms, but, with a word, he subdued those who were troubling him, commemorating the oaths and covenant of the parents.23porque cuando ya caían muertos a montones, unos sobre otros, se puso él de por medio, y cortó la cólera, y le impidió el pasar hacia los vivos. For when they were now fallen down dead by heaps one upon another, he stood between them and cut off their attack, and he divided those who controlled the path to the living.24Por cuanto en la vestidura talar que llevaba, estaba simbolizado todo el mundo; como también los gloriosos nombres de los patriarcas estaban esculpidos en los cuatro órdenes de piedras, y grabada en la tiara de su cabeza tu Majestad. For, within the garment of shame which he held, the world was all together, and the great deeds of the parents were engraved on four orders of stones, and your majesty was engraved on the crown of his head.25A estas cosas, pues, cedió el exterminador, y las respetó; pues bastaba ya esta sola muestra de ira. Yet he who was exterminating yielded even to those he frightened. For one trial of wrath was sufficient.
