Sabiduría 4

¹Oh, ¡cuán bella es la generación casta con claridad! Inmortal es su memoria, y en honor delante de Dios y de los hombres. O how beautiful is the chaste fruit of purity! For its remembrance is immortal, because it is observed both with God and with men.²Cuando está presente, la imitan; y cuando se ausenta, la echan de menos; coronada triunfa eternamente, ganando el premio en combates inmaculados. When it is present, they imitate it, and they desire it when it has withdrawn itself, and it triumphs crowned forever, winning the reward of undefiled conflicts.³Pero la raza de los impíos, aunque multiplicada, de nada servirá; no echarán hondas raíces los pimpollos bastardos, ni tendrán una estable consistencia. But the great number of the many different kinds of the impious will not be to their advantage, and spurious seedlings will not be given deep roots, nor will they establish any firm foundation.⁴Que si por algún tiempo brotan sus ramas, como no están firmes serán sacudidos por el viento, y desarraigados por la violencia del huracán. And if they spring forth with branches for a time, yet, being set infirmly, they will be shaken by the wind, and, by the superabundance of the winds, they will be eradicated.⁵Con lo que serán desgajadas sus ramas antes de acabar de formarse; inútiles y de áspero gusto son sus frutos, y para nada buenos. For the incomplete branches will be broken, and their fruits will be useless, and bitter to eat, and fit for nothing.⁶Porque los hijos nacidos de uniones ilícitas, al preguntárseles de quién son, vienen a ser testigos que deponen contra la maldad de sus padres. For all the sons born from iniquity are witnesses of wickedness against their parents at their interrogation.⁷Mas el justo, aunque arrebatado de la muerte, estará en lugar de refrigerio. But the just, if death seizes him beforehand, will be refreshed.⁸Porque no hacen venerable la vejez los muchos días ni los muchos años; sino que la prudencia del hombre suple las canas, For old age is made venerable, neither by lasting long, nor by counting the number of years; yet understanding is the gray hair of wisdom for men,⁹y es edad anciana la vida inmaculada. and an immaculate life is a generation of sages.¹⁰Porque agradó a Dios, fue amado de Él; y cómo vivía entre los pecadores, fue trasladado a otra parte. Pleasing to God, having been made beloved, and living among sinners, he was transformed.¹¹Fue arrebatado para que la malicia no alterase su modo de pensar, ni sedujesen su alma las apariencias. He was quickly taken away, for malice could not alter his understanding, nor could deceit beguile his soul.¹²Pues el hechizo de la vanidad oscurece el bien; y la inconstancia de la concupiscencia pervierte el ánimo inocente. For fascination with entertainment obscures good things, and the unfaithfulness of desire subverts the mind without malice.¹³Con lo poco que vivió, llenó una larga vida. Completed in a short time, he fulfilled many times.¹⁴Porque su alma era grata a Dios; por eso se apresuró Él a sacarle de en medio de los malvados. Mas viendo las gentes, no entendieron, ni reflexionaron en su corazón: Truly his soul was pleasing to God. Because of this, he hastened to bring him out of the midst of iniquities, but the people see this and do not understand, nor do they place such things in their hearts:¹⁵que la gracia de Dios y la misericordia son para sus santos, y que Él fija su mirada sobre los escogidos. that the grace and mercy of God is with his holy ones, and he watches over his elect.¹⁶El justo muerto condena a los impíos que viven; y su juventud presto acabada, la larga vida del pecador. But the just dead will condemn the impious living, and youth hastily completed results in a long unjust life.¹⁷Verán el fin del hombre prudente, y no comprenderán los designios de Dios sobre él, ni cómo el Señor le ha puesto en salvo. For they will see the end of the wise, and will neither understand, nor imagine, that he is of God, and that therefore the Lord has safeguarded him.¹⁸Le verán, y le mirarán con desprecio, mas el Señor se burlará de ellos. For they will see and despise him, but the Lord will ridicule them.¹⁹Al cabo vendrán a morir sin honor, y estarán con eterna infamia entre los muertos; porque Él hará que hinchados revienten por medio, sin que osen abrir su boca, y los desquiciará desde los cimientos. Serán reducidos a extrema desolación; quedarán gimiendo, y perecerá su memoria. And after this, they will fall without honor and with contempt among the dead forever. Seeing that they are puffed up and speechless, he will shatter them and will shake them from the foundations all the way to the top, to their utter desolation, and they will grieve and their remembrance will perish.²⁰Comparecerán llenos de espanto por el remordimiento de sus pecados, y sus iniquidades se levantarán contra ellos. They will hurry with fear at the understanding of their sins, and their iniquities will bear witness against them.
