1Aspirad al amor. Anhelad también los dones espirituales, particularmente el de profecía. Pursue charity. Be zealous for spiritual things, but only so that you may prophesy.2Porque el que habla en lenguas, no habla a los hombres sino a Dios, pues nadie le entiende, porque habla en espíritu misterios. For whoever speaks in tongues, speaks not to men, but to God. For no one understands. Yet by the Spirit, he speaks mysteries.3Mas el que profetiza, habla a los hombres para edificación y exhortación y consuelo. But whoever prophesies speaks to men for edification and exhortation and consolation.4El que habla en lenguas, se edifica a sí mismo; mas el que profetiza, edifica a la Iglesia. Whoever speaks in tongues edifies himself. But whoever prophesies edifies the Church.5Deseo que todos vosotros habléis en lenguas, pero más aún que profeticéis; porque mayor es el que profetiza que quien habla en lenguas, a no ser que también interprete, para que la Iglesia reciba edificación. Now I want you all to speak in tongues, but more so to prophesy. For he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks in tongues, unless perhaps he interprets, so that the Church may receive edification.6Ahora bien, hermanos, si yo fuera a vosotros hablando en lenguas ¿qué os aprovecharía si no os hablase por revelación, o con ciencia, o con profecía, o con enseñanza? But now, brothers, if I were to come to you speaking in tongues, how would it benefit you, unless instead I speak to you in revelation, or in knowledge, or in prophecy, or in doctrine?7Aun las cosas inanimadas que producen sonido, como la flauta o la cítara, si no dan voces distinguibles ¿cómo se sabrá qué es lo que se toca con la flauta y qué con la cítara? Even those things that are without a soul can make sounds, whether it is a wind or a stringed instrument. But unless they present a distinction within the sounds, how will it be known which is from the pipe and which is from the string?8Así también si la trompeta diera un sonido confuso ¿quién se prepararía para la batalla? For example, if the trumpet made an uncertain sound, who would prepare himself for battle?9De la misma manera vosotros, si con la lengua no proferís palabras inteligibles, ¿cómo se conocerá lo que decís? Pues estáis hablando al aire. So it is with you also, for unless you utter with the tongue in plain speech, how will it be known what is said? For then you would be speaking into the air.10Por numerosos que sean tal vez en el mundo los diversos sonidos, nada hay, empero, que no sea una voz (inteligible). Consider that there are so many different kinds of languages in this world, and yet none is without a voice.11Si, pues, el valor del sonido es para mí ininteligible, será para el que habla un bárbaro, y el que habla un bárbaro para mí. Therefore, if I do not understand the nature of the voice, then I shall be like a foreigner to the one with whom I am speaking; and he who is speaking will be like a foreigner to me.12Así también vosotros, ya que anheláis dones espirituales, procurad tenerlos abundantemente para edificación de la Iglesia. So it is with you also. And since you are zealous for what is spiritual, seek the edification of the Church, so that you may abound.13Por lo cual, el que habla en lenguas, ruegue poder interpretar. For this reason, too, whoever speaks in tongues, let him pray for the interpretation.14Porque si hago oración en lenguas, mi espíritu ora, pero mi mente queda sin fruto. So, if I pray in tongues, my spirit prays, but my mind is without fruit.15¿Qué haré pues? Oraré con el espíritu, mas oraré también con la mente; cantaré con el espíritu, mas cantaré también con la mente. What is next? I should pray with the spirit, and also pray with the mind. I should sing psalms with the spirit, and also recite psalms with the mind.16De lo contrario, si tú bendices solo con el espíritu ¿cómo al fin de tu acción de gracias el simple fiel dirá el Amén? puesto que no entiende lo que tú dices. Otherwise, if you have blessed only with the spirit, how can someone, in a state of ignorance, add an “Amen” to your blessing? For he does not know what you are saying.17Tú, en verdad, das bien las gracias, mas el otro no se edifica. In this case, certainly, you give thanks well, but the other person is not edified.18Gracias doy a Dios de que sé hablar en lenguas más que todos vosotros; I thank my God that I speak in tongues for all of you.19pero en la Iglesia quiero más bien hablar cinco palabras con mi inteligencia, para instruir también a otros, que diez mil palabras en lenguas. But in the Church, I prefer to speak five words from my mind, so that I may instruct others also, rather than ten thousand words in tongues.20Hermanos, no seáis niños en inteligencia; sed, sí, niños en la malicia; mas en la inteligencia sed hombres acabados. Brothers, do not choose to have the minds of children. Instead, be free of malice like infants, but be mature in your minds.21En la Ley está escrito: “En lenguas extrañas, y por otros labios hablaré a este pueblo; y ni aun así me oirán, dice el Señor”. It is written in the law: “I will speak to this people with other tongues and other lips, and even so, they will not heed me, says the Lord.”22De manera que el don de lenguas es para señal, no a los creyentes, sino a los que no creen; mas la profecía no es para los incrédulos, sino para los creyentes. And so, tongues are a sign, not for believers, but for unbelievers; and prophecies are not for unbelievers, but for believers.23Si, pues, toda la Iglesia está congregada, y todos hablan en lenguas, y entran hombres sencillos o que no creen ¿no dirán que estáis locos? If then, the entire Church were to gather together as one, and if all were to speak in tongues, and then ignorant or unbelieving persons were to enter, would they not say that you were insane?24Si en cambio todos profetizan, y entra un incrédulo o un hombre sencillo, es por todos convencido y juzgado por todos. But if everyone prophesies, and one who is ignorant or unbelieving enters, he may be convinced by it all, because he understands it all.25Los secretos de su corazón se hacen manifiestos; y así, cayendo sobre su rostro, adorará a Dios, confesando que realmente Dios está en medio de vosotros. The secrets of his heart are then made manifest. And so, falling to his face, he would adore God, proclaiming that God is truly among you.26¿Qué hacer, hermanos? Pues cuando os reunís, cada uno tiene un salmo, o una enseñanza, o una revelación, o don de lenguas, o interpretación. Hágase todo para edificación. What is next, brothers? When you gather together, each one of you may have a psalm, or a doctrine, or a revelation, or a language, or an interpretation, but let everything be done for edification.27Si alguno habla en lenguas, que sean dos, o cuando mucho, tres, y por turno; y que uno interprete. If anyone is speaking in tongues, let there be only two, or at most three, and then in turn, and let someone interpret.28Pero si no hay intérprete, calle en la Iglesia, y hable consigo y con Dios. But if there is no one to interpret, he should remain silent in the church, then he may speak when he is alone with God.29Cuanto a los profetas, hablen dos o tres, y los otros juzguen. And let the prophets speak, two or three, and let the others discern.30Mas si algo fuere revelado a otro que está sentado, cállese el primero. But then, if something is revealed to another who is sitting, let the first one become silent.31Porque podéis profetizar todos, uno por uno, para que todos aprendan, y todos sean consolados; For you are all able to prophesy one at a time, so that all may learn and all may be encouraged.32pues los espíritus de los profetas obedecen a los profetas, For the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.33puesto que Dios no es Dios de desorden, sino de paz. Como en todas las Iglesias de los santos, And God is not of dissension, but of peace, just as I also teach in all the churches of the saints.34las mujeres guarden silencio en las asambleas; porque no les compete hablar, sino estar sujetas, como también lo dice la Ley. Women should be silent in the churches. For it is not permitted for them to speak; but instead, they should be subordinate, as the law also says.35Y si desean aprender algo, pregunten a sus maridos en casa; porque es cosa indecorosa para la mujer hablar en asamblea. And if they want to learn anything, let them ask their husbands at home. For it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in church.36¿O es que la Palabra de Dios tuvo su origen en vosotros, o ha llegado solo a vosotros? So now, did the Word of God proceed from you? Or was it sent to you alone?37Si alguno piensa que es profeta o que es espiritual, reconozca que lo que os escribo es precepto del Señor. If anyone seems to be a prophet or a spiritual person, he should understand these things which I am writing to you, that these things are the commandments of the Lord.38Mas si alguno lo desconoce, será desconocido él. If anyone does not recognize these things, he should not be recognized.39Así que, hermanos míos, aspirad a la profecía, y en cuanto al hablar en lenguas, no lo impidáis. And so, brothers, be zealous to prophesy, and do not prohibit speaking in tongues.40Hágase, pues, todo honestamente y por orden. But let everything be done respectfully and according to proper order.
