Daniel 13
1Había un varón que habitaba en Babilonia, llamado Joaquín; And there was a man living in Babylon, and his name was Joakim.2el cual se casó con una mujer que se llamaba Susana, hija de Helcías, hermosa en extremo y temerosa de Dios; And he received a wife named Susanna, the daughter of Hilkiah, who was very beautiful and God-fearing.3porque sus padres, que eran justos, instruyeron a su hija según la Ley de Moisés. For her parents, because they were righteous, had educated their daughter according to the law of Moses.4Era Joaquín muy rico, y tenía un jardín junto a su casa, al cual concurrían muchos judíos, por ser él el más ilustre de todos. But Joakim was very wealthy, and he had an orchard near his house, and the Jews flocked to him, because he was the most honorable of them all.5Aquel año fueron elegidos jueces del pueblo, dos ancianos de aquellos de quienes dijo el Señor: “Salió la iniquidad de Babilonia, de los ancianos jueces, los cuales parecían gobernar al pueblo.” And two elder judges had been appointed among the people that year, about whom the Lord has said, “Iniquity has come out of Babylon, from the elder judges, who seemed to govern the people.”6Frecuentaban estos la casa de Joaquín, donde acudían a ellos todos cuantos tenían algún pleito. These frequented the house of Joakim, and all came to them, who had need of judgment.7Y cuando al mediodía se iba la gente, entraba Susana a pasearse por el jardín de su marido. But when the people departed at noontime, Susanna went in and walked around in her husband’s orchard.8Los viejos la veían cada día cómo entraba a pasearse; y se inflamaron en malos deseos hacia ella, And the elders saw her entering and walking around every day, and they were inflamed with desire towards her.9de tal manera que pervirtieron su mente y desviaron sus ojos para no mirar al cielo ni acordarse de sus justos juicios. And they perverted their reason and turned away their eyes, so that they would not look to heaven, nor call to mind just judgments.10Quedaron ambos heridos de pasión por ella, pero no se comunicaron el uno al otro su pasión; And so they were both wounded by the love of her, yet they did not reveal their grief to one another.11pues se avergonzaban de descubrir su concupiscencia y deseos de pecar con ella; For they were ashamed to reveal to each other their desire, wanting to lie with her.12aunque buscaban cada día con mayor solicitud el poderla ver. And so they watched carefully every day to see her. And one said to the other,13Y dijo el uno al otro: “Vámonos a casa, que ya es hora de comer.” Salieron y se separaron el uno del otro. “Let us go home, for it is lunch time.” And going out, they departed one from another.14Pero volviendo cada cual otra vez, se encontraron en un mismo lugar; y preguntándose mutuamente el motivo, confesaron su pasión, y entonces, de común acuerdo, determinaron el tiempo en que podrían hallarla sola. And returning again, they came to the same place, and, each asking the other the reason, they admitted their desire. And then they agreed to set a time when they would be able to find her alone.15Mientras estaban aguardando una ocasión oportuna, entró ella en el jardín, como solía todos los días; acompañada solamente de dos doncellas, y quiso bañarse en el jardín, pues hacía calor. But it happened, while they watched for an opportune day, that she entered at a particular time, just as yesterday and the day before, with only two maids, and she wanted to wash in the orchard, because it was so hot.16No había en él nadie, sino los dos viejos, que se habían escondido y la estaban acechando. And there was no one there, except the two elders in hiding, and they were studying her.17Mandó ella a las doncellas: “Traedme el aceite y los perfumes, y cerrad las puertas del jardín; pues quiero bañarme.” And so she said to the maids, “Bring me oil and ointments, and shut the doors of the orchard, so that I may wash.”18Hicieron como dijo, y cerraron las puertas del jardín; y salieron por una puerta excusada para traer lo que había pedido, sin saber que los viejos estaban dentro escondidos. And they did as she ordered them. And they shut the doors of the orchard and left through a back door to fetch what she required, and they did not know that the elders were hiding within.19Apenas se hubieron ido las criadas, se levantaron los dos viejos y corriendo hacia ella le dijeron: But when the maids had departed, the two elders arose and hurried to her, and they said,20“Mira, las puertas del jardín están cerradas, nadie nos ve, y nosotros estamos enamorados de ti. Condesciende con nosotros, y cede a nuestros deseos. “Behold, the doors of the orchard are closed, and no one can see us, and we are in desire for you. Because of these things, consent to us and lie with us.21Porque si te resistieres a ello, testificaremos contra ti, diciendo que estaba contigo un joven, y que por eso despachaste a las doncellas.” But if you will not, we will bear witness against you that a young man was with you and, for this reason, you sent your maids away from you.”22Entonces Susana prorrumpió en gemidos y dijo: “Estrechada me hallo por todos lados; porque si hago eso que queréis, muerte es para mí; y si no lo hago, no me libraré de vuestras manos. Susanna sighed and said, “I am closed in on every side. For if I do this thing, it is death to me; yet if I do not do it, I will not escape your hands.23Pero mejor es para mí caer en vuestras manos, sin haber hecho tal cosa, que pecar en la presencia del Señor.” But it is better for me to fall unavoidably into your hands, than to sin in the sight of the Lord.”24Y dio Susana un fuerte grito; pero gritaron también los viejos contra ella. And Susanna cried out with a loud voice, but the elders also cried out against her.25Y uno de ellos corrió a las puertas del jardín y las abrió. And one of them hurried to the door of the orchard and opened it.26Cuando los criados de la casa oyeron el grito en el jardín, corrieron allá por la puerta excusada para ver lo que era. And so, when the servants of the house heard the outcry in the orchard, they rushed in by the back door to see what was happening.27Mas después que los viejos hubieron hablado, quedaron los criados sumamente avergonzados; porque nunca tal cosa se había dicho de Susana. But after the old men had spoken, the servants were greatly ashamed, for there had never been anything of this kind said about Susanna. And it happened on the next day,28Al día siguiente concurrió el pueblo a la casa de Joaquín, su marido, y vinieron también los dos viejos, llenos de perversos pensamientos contra Susana, para condenarla a muerte. when the people came to Joakim her husband, that the two appointed elders also came, full of wicked plans against Susanna, in order to put her to death.29Dijeron en presencia del pueblo: “Envíese a llamar a Susana, hija de Helcías, mujer de Joaquín.” Y enviaron por ella. And they said before the people, “Send for Susanna, daughter of Hilkiah, the wife of Joakim.” And immediately they sent for her.30La cual vino con sus padres e hijos y todos sus parientes. And she arrived with her parents, and sons, and all her relatives.31Era Susana sumamente delicada y de extraordinaria belleza. Moreover, Susanna was exceedingly delicate and beautiful in appearance.32Entonces aquellos malvados la mandaron quitarse el velo —pues estaba ella con su velo puesto— para saciarse por lo menos de su hermosura. But those wicked ones commanded that her face should be uncovered, (for she was covered,) so that at least they might be satisfied with her beauty.33Entretanto lloraban los suyos y cuantos la conocían. Therefore, her own and all who knew her wept.34Luego se levantaron los dos viejos en medio del pueblo y pusieron sus manos sobre la cabeza de Susana. Yet the two appointed elders, rising up in the midst of the people, set their hands upon her head.35Ella, empero, llorando alzó sus ojos al cielo; porque su corazón estaba lleno de confianza en el Señor. And weeping, she gazed up to heaven, for her heart had faith in the Lord.36Y dijeron los viejos: “Estándonos paseando solos en el jardín, entró esta con dos criadas; y cerró las puertas del jardín, enviando fuera a las criadas. And the appointed elders said, “While we were taking a walk in the orchard alone, this one came in with two maids, and she shut the doors of the orchard, and she sent the maids away from her.37Entonces se le acercó un joven que estaba escondido, y pecó con ella. And a young man came to her, who was in hiding, and he lay down with her.38Nosotros que estábamos en un lado del jardín, viendo la maldad fuimos corriendo adonde estaban, y los hallamos en el mismo acto. Furthermore, since we were in a corner of the orchard, seeing this wickedness, we ran up to them, and we saw them consorting together.39Mas al joven no pudimos prenderlo, porque era más fuerte que nosotros, y abriendo la puerta se escapó corriendo, And, indeed, we were unable to catch him, because he was stronger than us, and opening the doors, he leaped out.40pero habiendo apresado a esta, la preguntamos quién era el joven, y no nos lo quiso manifestar. De esto somos testigos.” But, since we had apprehended this one, we demanded to know who the young man was, but she was unwilling to tell us. On this matter, we are witnesses.”41La asamblea les dio crédito, como a ancianos que eran y jueces del pueblo, y la condenaron a muerte. The multitude believed them, just as if they were elders and the judges of the people, and they condemned her to death.42Entonces Susana clamó en alta voz, y dijo: “Oh Dios eterno, que conoces las cosas ocultas, que sabes todas las cosas aun antes que sucedan, But Susanna cried out with a loud voice and said, “Eternal God, who knows what is hidden, who knows all things before they happen,43Tú sabes que estos han levantado contra mí testimonio falso; y he aquí que yo muero sin haber hecho nada de lo que estos han inventado maliciosamente contra mí.” you know that they have borne false witness against me, and behold, I must die, though I have done none of these things, which these men have maliciously invented against me.”44Y oyó el Señor su oración. But the Lord heeded her voice.45Pues cuando la conducían al suplicio, el Señor suscitó el santo espíritu de un tierno jovencito por nombre Daniel; And when she was led away to death, the Lord raised up the holy spirit of a young boy, whose name was Daniel.46el cual, a grandes voces, comenzó a gritar: “Inocente soy yo de la sangre de esta.” And he cried out with a loud voice, “I am clean of the blood of this one.”47Y volviéndose hacia él toda la gente, le dijeron: “¿Qué es lo que dices?” And all the people, turning back towards him, said, “What is this word that you are saying?”48Mas él, estando de pie en medio de ellos, dijo: “¿Tan insensatos sois, oh hijos de Israel, que sin examinar y sin conocer la verdad, habéis condenado a una hija de Israel? But he, while standing in the midst of them, said, “Are you so foolish, sons of Israel, that without judging and without knowing what the truth is, you have condemned a daughter of Israel?49Volved al tribunal, porque estos han dicho falso testimonio contra ella.” Return to judgment, because they have spoken false witness against her.”50Volvió el pueblo, a toda prisa; y los ancianos le dijeron (a Daniel): “Ven, y siéntate en medio de nosotros e instrúyenos; ya que te ha concedido Dios la honra de ancianía” Therefore, the people returned with haste, and the old men said to him, “Come and sit down in our midst and show us, since God has given you the honor of old age.”51Y dijo Daniel al pueblo: “Separad a estos lejos el uno del otro, y yo los examinaré.” And Daniel said to them, “Separate these at a distance from one another, and I will judge between them.”52Cuando estuvieron separados el uno del otro, llamó a uno de ellos y le dijo: “Envejecido en la maldad, ahora caerán sobre ti los pecados que has cometido antes, And so, when they were divided, one from the other, he called one of them, and he said to him, “You deep-rooted ancient evil, now your sins have come out, which you have committed before,53cuando pronunciabas injustas sentencias, oprimías a los inocentes y librabas a los malvados, a pesar de que el Señor tiene dicho: judging unjust judgments, oppressing the innocent, and setting free the guilty, though the Lord declares, ‘The innocent and the just you must not put to death.’54«No harás morir al inocente y justo.» Ahora bien, si la viste, di: ¿Bajo qué árbol los viste confabular entre sí?” Respondió él: “Debajo de un lentisco.” Now then, if you saw her, declare under which tree you saw them conversing together.” He said, “Under an evergreen mastic tree.”55A lo cual replicó Daniel: “Ciertamente que contra tu cabeza has mentido; pues he aquí que el ángel del Señor, por sentencia que ha recibido de Él, te partirá por medio.” But Daniel said, “Truly, you have lied against your own head. For behold, the angel of God, having received the sentence from him, will split you down the middle.56Y habiendo hecho retirar a este, hizo venir al otro, y le dijo: “Raza de Canaán, y no de Judá, la hermosura te fascinó, y la pasión pervirtió tu corazón. And, having put him aside, he commanded the other to approach, and he said to him, “You offspring of Canaan, and not of Judah, beauty has deceived you, and desire has perverted your heart.57Así os portabais con las hijas de Israel, las cuales por miedo condescendían con vosotros; pero esta hija de Judá no sufrió vuestra maldad. Thus did you do to the daughters of Israel, and they, out of fear, consorted with you, but a daughter of Judah would not tolerate your iniquity.58Ahora bien, dime: ¿Bajo qué árbol los sorprendiste tratando entre sí?” Él respondió: “Debajo de una encina.” Now then, declare to me, under which tree you caught them conversing together.” He said, “Under an evergreen oak tree.”59A lo que repuso Daniel: “Ciertamente que también tú mientes contra tu cabeza; pues el ángel del Señor está esperando con la espada en la mano para partirte por medio y así exterminaros.” And Daniel said to him, “Truly, you also have lied against your own head. For the angel of the Lord waits, holding a sword, to cut you down the middle and put you to death.”60Entonces toda la asamblea exclamó en alta voz, bendiciendo a Dios que salva a los que ponen en Él su esperanza. And then the entire assembly cried out in a loud voice, and they blessed God, who saves those who hope in him.61Y se levantaron contra los dos viejos, a los cuales Daniel había convencido por su propia boca de haber proferido un falso testimonio, y les hicieron el mal que ellos habían intentado contra su prójimo; And they rose up against the two appointed elders, (for Daniel had convicted them, by their own mouth, of bearing false witness,) and they did to them just as they had wickedly done against their neighbor,62y cumpliendo la Ley de Moisés los mataron, con lo que fue salvada en aquel día la sangre inocente. so as to act according to the law of Moses. And they put them to death, and innocent blood was saved on that day.63Entonces Helcías y su esposa alabaron a Dios por su hija Susana; y lo mismo hizo Joaquín, su marido, con todos los parientes; porque nada se halló en ella de deshonesto. But Hilkiah and his wife praised God for their daughter, Susanna, with Joakim, her husband, and all her relatives, because there had been found in her no disgrace.64Mas Daniel desde aquel día en adelante se hizo famoso ante todo el pueblo. And so Daniel became great in the sight of the people from that day, and thereafter.65El rey Astiages fue a reunirse con sus padres, y le sucedió en el trono Ciro, rey de Persia. And king Astyages was laid to rest with his fathers. And Cyrus the Persian received his kingdom.
