Hebreos 11
1La fe es la sustancia de lo que se espera, la prueba de lo que no se ve. Now, faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not apparent.2Por ella se dio testimonio a los padres. For this reason, the ancients were given testimony.3Por la fe entendemos cómo las edades han sido dispuestas por la Palabra de Dios, de modo que lo existente no tiene su origen en lo visible. By faith, we understand the world to be fashioned by the Word of God, so that the visible might be made by the invisible.4Por la fe, Abel ofreció a Dios un sacrificio más excelente que Caín, a causa del cual fue declarado justo, dando Dios testimonio a sus ofrendas; y por medio de ellas habla aún después de muerto. By faith, Abel offered to God a much better sacrifice than that of Cain, through which he obtained testimony that he was just, in that God offered testimony to his gifts. And through that sacrifice, he still speaks to us, though he is dead.5Por la fe, Enoc fue trasladado para que no viese la muerte, y no fue hallado porque Dios le trasladó; pues antes de su traslación recibió el testimonio de que agradaba a Dios. By faith, Enoch was transferred, so that he would not see death, and he was not found because God had transferred him. For before he was transferred, he had testimony that he pleased God.6Sin fe es imposible ser grato, porque es preciso que el que se llega a Dios crea su ser y que es remunerador de los que le buscan. But without faith, it is impossible to please God. For whoever approaches God must believe that he exists, and that he rewards those who seek him.7Por la fe, Noé, recibiendo revelación de las cosas que aún no se veían, hizo con piadoso temor un arca para la salvación de su casa; y por esa (misma fe) condenó al mundo y vino a ser heredero de la justicia según la fe. By faith, Noah, having accepted an answer about those things which were not yet seen, being afraid, fashioned an ark for the salvation of his house. Through the ark, he condemned the world, and was established as the heir of the justice that occurs through faith.8Llamado por la fe, Abrahán obedeció para partirse a un lugar que había de recibir en herencia, y salió sin saber adónde iba. By faith, the one called Abraham obeyed, going out to the place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going.9Por la fe habitó en la tierra de la promesa como en tierra extraña, morando en tiendas de campaña con Isaac y Jacob, coherederos de la misma promesa, By faith, he stayed in the Land of the Promise as if in a foreign land, dwelling in cottages, with Isaac and Jacob, co-heirs of the same promise.10porque esperaba aquella ciudad de fundamentos, cuyo arquitecto y constructor es Dios. For he was awaiting a city having firm foundations, whose designer and builder is God.11Por la fe, también la misma Sara, a pesar de haber pasado ya la edad propicia, recibió vigor para fundar una descendencia, porque tuvo por fiel a Aquel que había hecho la promesa. By faith also, Sarah herself, being barren, received the ability to conceive offspring, even though she was past that age in life. For she believed him to be faithful, who had promised.12Por lo cual fueron engendrados de uno solo, y ese ya amortecido, hijos “como las estrellas del cielo en multitud y como las arenas que hay en la orilla del mar”. Because of this, there were also born, from one who himself was as if dead, a multitude like the stars of heaven, who are, like the sand of the seashore, innumerable.13En la fe murieron todos estos sin recibir las cosas prometidas, pero las vieron y las saludaron de lejos, confesando que eran extranjeros y peregrinos sobre la tierra. All of these passed away, adhering to faith, not having received the promises, yet beholding them from afar and saluting them, and confessing themselves to be sojourners and guests upon the earth.14Porque los que así hablan dan a entender que van buscando una patria. For those who speak in this way are themselves indicating that they seek a homeland.15Que si se acordaran de aquella de donde salieron, habrían tenido oportunidad para volverse. And if, indeed, they had been mindful of the very place from which they departed, they certainly would have returned in time.16Mas ahora anhelan otra mejor, es decir, la celestial. Por esto Dios no se avergüenza de ellos para llamarse su Dios, como que les tenía preparada una ciudad. But now they hunger for a better place, that is, Heaven. For this reason, God is not ashamed to be called their God. For he has prepared a city for them.17Por la fe, Abrahán, al ser probado, ofreció a Isaac. By faith, Jacob, as he was dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph; and he reverenced the summit of his rod.22Por la fe, José, moribundo, se acordó del éxodo de los hijos de Israel, y dio orden respecto de sus huesos. By faith, Joseph, as he was dying, recalled the departure of the sons of Israel, and gave a commandment concerning his bones.23Por la fe Moisés, recién nacido, fue escondido tres meses por sus padres, pues vieron al niño tan hermoso, y no temieron la orden del rey. By faith, Moses, after being born, was hidden for three months by his parents, because they had seen that he was a graceful infant, and they did not fear the king’s edict.24Por la fe, Moisés, siendo ya grande, rehusó ser llamado hijo de la hija del Faraón, By faith, Moses, after growing up, denied himself a place as the son of Pharaoh’s daughter,25eligiendo antes padecer aflicción con el pueblo de Dios que disfrutar de las delicias pasajeras del pecado, choosing to be afflicted with the people of God, rather than to have the pleasantness of sin for a time,26y juzgando que el oprobio de Cristo era una riqueza más grande que los tesoros de Egipto; porque tenía su mirada puesta en la remuneración. valuing the reproach of Christ to be a greater wealth than the treasures of the Egyptians. For he looked forward to his reward.27Por la fe dejó a Egipto, no temiendo la ira del rey, pues se sostuvo como si viera ya al Invisible. By faith, he abandoned Egypt, not dreading the animosity of the king. For he pressed on, as if seeing him who is unseen.28Por la fe celebró la Pascua y la efusión de la sangre para que el exterminador no tocase a los primogénitos (de Israel). By faith, the walls of Jericho collapsed, after being encircled for seven days.31Por la fe, Rahab, la ramera, no pereció con los incrédulos, por haber acogido en paz a los exploradores. For time is not sufficient for me to give an account of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel, and the Prophets:33los cuales por la fe subyugaron reinos, obraron justicia, alcanzaron promesas, obstruyeron la boca de los leones, those who, by faith, conquered kingdoms, accomplished justice, obtained promises, closed the mouths of lions,34apagaron la violencia del fuego, escaparon al filo de la espada, cobraron fuerzas de su flaqueza, se hicieron poderosos en la guerra y pusieron en fuga a ejércitos enemigos. extinguished the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, recovered from infirmities, showed strength in battle, turned back the armies of foreigners.35Mujeres hubo que recibieron resucitados a sus muertos; y otros fueron estirados en el potro, rehusando la liberación para alcanzar una resurrección mejor. Women received their dead by means of resurrection. But others suffered severe punishment, not yet receiving redemption, so that they would find a better resurrection.36Otros sufrieron escarnios y azotes, y también cadenas y cárceles. Truly, others were tested by mocking and lashes, and moreover by chains and imprisonment.37Fueron apedreados, expuestos a prueba, aserrados, muertos a espada; anduvieron errantes, cubiertos de pieles de ovejas y de cabras, faltos de lo necesario, atribulados, maltratados They were stoned; they were cut; they were tempted. With the slaughter of the sword, they were killed. They wandered about in sheepskin and in goatskin, in dire need, in anguish afflicted.38—ellos, de quienes el mundo no era digno—, extraviados por desiertos y montañas, en cuevas y cavernas de la tierra. Of them, the world was not worthy, wandering in solitude on mountains, in the caves and caverns of the earth.39Y todos estos que por la fe recibieron tales testimonios, no obtuvieron la (realización de la) promesa, And all these, having been proven by the testimony of faith, did not receive the Promise.40porque Dios tenía provisto para nosotros algo mejor, a fin de que no llegasen a la consumación sin nosotros. God’s Providence holds something better for us, so that not without us would they be perfected.
