1Este Melquisedec, rey de Salem, sacerdote del Dios Altísimo, es el que salió al encuentro de Abrahán, cuanto este volvía de la derrota de los reyes, y le bendijo. For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, met Abraham, as he was returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him.2A él también repartió Abrahán el diezmo de todo; y su nombre se interpreta, primero, rey de justicia, y luego también, rey de Salem, que es rey de paz. And Abraham divided to him a tenth part of everything. And in translation his name is first, indeed, king of justice, and next also king of Salem, that is, king of peace.3El cual, sin padre, sin madre, sin genealogía, sin principio de días ni fin de vida, fue asemejado al Hijo de Dios y permanece sacerdote eternamente. Without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life, he is thereby likened to the Son of God, who remains a priest continuously.4Y considerad cuán grande es este a quien el patriarca Abrahán dio una décima parte de los mejores despojos. Next, consider how great this man is, since the Patriarch Abraham even gave tithes to him from the principal things.5Cierto que aquellos de los hijos de Leví que reciben el sacerdocio tienen el precepto de tomar, según la Ley, el diezmo del pueblo, esto es, de sus hermanos, aunque estos también son de la estirpe de Abrahán; And indeed, those who are from the sons of Levi, having received the priesthood, hold a commandment to take tithes from the people in accord with the law, that is, from their brothers, even though they also went forth from the loins of Abraham.6pero aquel que no es del linaje de ellos tomó diezmos de Abrahán y bendijo al que tenía las promesas. But this man, whose lineage is not enumerated with them, received tithes from Abraham, and he blessed even the one who held the promises.7Ahora bien, no cabe duda de que el menor es bendecido por el mayor. Yet this is without any contradiction, for what is less should be blessed by what is better.8Y aquí por cierto los que cobran diezmos son hombres que mueren, mas allí uno de quien se da testimonio que vive. And certainly, here, men who receive tithes still die; but there, he bears witness that he lives.9Y por decirlo así, también Leví, el que cobra diezmos, los pagó por medio de Abrahán, And so it may be said that even Levi, who received tithes, was himself a tithe through Abraham.10porque estaba todavía en los lomos de su padre cuando Melquisedec le salió al encuentro. For he was still in the loins of his father, when Melchizedek met him.11Si, pues, la perfección se hubiera dado por medio del sacerdocio levítico, ya que bajo él recibió el pueblo la Ley ¿qué necesidad aún de que se levantase otro sacerdote según el orden de Melquisedec y que no se denominase según el orden de Aarón? Therefore, if consummation had occurred through the Levitical priesthood (for under it the people received the law), then what further need would there be for another Priest to rise up according to the order of Melchizedek, one who was not called according to the order of Aaron?12Porque cambiándose el sacerdocio, fuerza es que haya también cambio de la Ley. For since the priesthood has been transferred, it is necessary that the law also be transferred.13Pues aquel de quien esto se dice, pertenecía a otra tribu, de la cual nadie sirvió al altar. For he about whom these things have been spoken is from another tribe, in which no one attends before the altar.14En efecto, manifiesto es que de Judá brotó el Señor nuestro, de la cual tribu nada dice Moisés cuando habla de sacerdotes. For it is evident that our Lord arose out of Judah, a tribe about which Moses said nothing concerning priests.15Esto es todavía mucho más manifiesto si a semejanza de Melquisedec se levanta otro sacerdote, And yet it is far more evident that, according to the likeness of Melchizedek, there rises up another priest,16constituido, no según la ley de un mandamiento carnal, sino conforme al poder de una vida indestructible; who was made, not according to the law of a carnal commandment, but according to the virtue of an indissoluble life.17pues tal es el testimonio: “Tú eres sacerdote para siempre según el orden de Melquisedec”. For he testifies: “You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek.”18Queda, por tanto, abrogado el mandamiento anterior, a causa de su flaqueza e inutilidad, Certainly, there is a setting aside of the former commandment, because of its weakness and lack of usefulness.19pues la Ley no llevaba nada a la perfección, sino que introdujo una esperanza mejor, por medio de la cual nos acercamos a Dios. For the law led no one to perfection, yet truly it introduced a better hope, through which we draw near to God.20Y por cuanto no fue hecho sin juramento, Moreover, it is not without an oath. For certainly, the others were made priests without an oath.21—pues aquellos fueron constituidos sacerdotes sin juramento, mas Este con juramento, por Aquel que le dijo: “Juró el Señor y no se arrepentirá: Tú eres sacerdote para siempre—” But this man was made a priest with an oath, by the One who said to him: “The Lord has sworn and he will not repent. You are a priest forever.”22de tanto mejor pacto fue constituido fiador Jesús. By so much, Jesus has been made the sponsor of a better testament.23Y aquellos fueron muchos sacerdotes, porque la muerte les impedía permanecer, And certainly, so many of the others became priests because, due to death, they were prohibited from continuing.24mas Este, por cuanto permanece para siempre, tiene un sacerdocio sempiterno. But this man, because he continues forever, has an everlasting priesthood.25Por lo cual puede salvar perfectamente a los que por Él se acercan a Dios, ya que vive siempre para interceder por ellos. And for this reason, he is able, continuously, to save those who approach God through him, since he is ever alive to make intercession on our behalf.26Y tal Sumo Sacerdote nos convenía: santo, inocente, inmaculado, apartado de los pecadores y encumbrado sobre los cielos, For it was fitting that we should have such a High Priest: holy, innocent, undefiled, set apart from sinners, and exalted higher than the heavens.27que no necesita diariamente, como los Sumos Sacerdotes, ofrecer víctimas, primero por sus propios pecados, y después por los del pueblo, porque esto lo hizo de una vez, ofreciéndose a sí mismo. And he has no need, daily, in the manner of other priests, to offer sacrifices, first for his own sins, and then for those of the people. For he has done this once, by offering himself.28Pues la Ley constituye Sumos Sacerdotes a hombres sujetos a la flaqueza; pero la palabra del juramento, posterior a la Ley, constituye al Hijo llegado a la perfección para siempre. For the law appoints men as priests, though they have infirmities. But, by the word of the oath that is after the law, the Son has been perfected for eternity.
