1¿De dónde las guerras, de dónde los pleitos entre vosotros? ¿No es de eso, de vuestras pasiones que luchan en vuestros miembros? Where do wars and contentions among you come from? Is it not from this: from your own desires, which battle within your members?2Deseáis y no tenéis; matáis y codiciáis, y sin embargo no podéis alcanzar; peleáis y hacéis guerra. Es que no tenéis porque no pedís. You desire, and you do not have. You envy and you kill, and you are unable to obtain. You argue and you fight, and you do not have, because you do not ask.3Pedís y no recibís, porque pedís mal, con la intención de saciar vuestras pasiones. You ask and you do not receive, because you ask badly, so that you may use it toward your own desires.4Adúlteros, ¿no sabéis que la amistad con el mundo es enemistad contra Dios? Quien, pues, quiere ser amigo del mundo, se constituye enemigo de Dios. You adulterers! Do you not know that the friendship of this world is hostile to God? Therefore, whoever has chosen to be a friend of this world has been made into an enemy of God.5¿O pensáis que en vano dice la Escritura: “El Espíritu que (Dios) hizo morar en nosotros ama con celos?” Or do you think that Scripture says in vain: “The spirit which lives within you desires unto envy?”6Mayor gracia nos otorga (con ello). Por eso dice: “A los soberbios resiste Dios, mas a los humildes da gracia”. But he gives a greater grace. Therefore he says: “God resists the arrogant, but he gives grace to the humble.”7Someteos, pues, a Dios; al diablo resistidle, y huirá de vosotros. Therefore, be subject to God. But resist the devil, and he will flee from you.8Acercaos vosotros a Dios y Él se acercará a vosotros. Limpiaos las manos, pecadores; purificad vuestros corazones, hipócritas. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners! And purify your hearts, you duplicitous souls!9Sentid vuestra miseria, lamentaos y llorad. Truéquese vuestra risa en llanto y vuestro regocijo en pesadumbre. Be afflicted: mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned into mourning, and your gladness into sorrow.10Abajaos delante del Señor y Él os levantará. Be humbled in the sight of the Lord, and he will exalt you.11No habléis mal, hermanos, unos de otros. El que murmura de su hermano o juzga a su hermano, de la Ley murmura y juzga a la Ley. Y si tú juzgas a la Ley, no eres cumplidor de la Ley, sino que te eriges en juez. Brothers, do not choose to slander one another. Whoever slanders his brother, or whoever judges his brother, slanders the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law, but a judge.12Uno solo es el Legislador y Juez: el que puede salvar y destruir. Tú, en cambio, ¿quién eres que juzgas al prójimo? There is one lawgiver and one judge. He is able to destroy, and he is able to set free.13Ahora a vosotros los que decís: “Hoy o mañana iremos a tal ciudad y pasaremos allí un año y negociaremos y haremos ganancias”, But who are you to judge your neighbor? Consider this, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into that city, and certainly we will spend a year there, and we will do business, and we will make our profit,”14¡vosotros que no sabéis ni lo que sucederá mañana! Pues ¿qué es vuestra vida? Sois humo que aparece por un momento y luego se disipa. consider that you do not know what will be tomorrow.15Deberíais en cambio decir: “Si el Señor quiere y vivimos, haremos esto o aquello”. For what is your life? It is a mist that appears for a brief time, and afterwards will vanish away. So what you ought to say is: “If the Lord wills,” or, “If we live,” we will do this or that.16Mas vosotros os complacéis en vuestras jactancias. Maligna es toda complacencia de tal género. But now you exult in your arrogance. All such exultation is wicked.17Pues, a quien no hace el bien, sabiendo hacerlo, se le imputa pecado. Therefore, he who knows that he ought to do a good thing, and does not do it, for him it is a sin.
