Job 15

¹Entonces Elifaz temanita tomó la palabra y dijo: But Eliphaz the Themanite, answering, said:²“¿Es acaso de sabios responder con argumentos vanos, y llenarse el pecho de viento, Will a wise man answer as if he were speaking wind, and will he fill his stomach with fire?³arguyendo con palabras inútiles, y con razones sin valor? You rebuke with words he who is not equal to you, and you speak what is not expedient for you,⁴De veras, tú destruyes la piedad y socavas el temor de Dios. to such an extent that, within yourself, you have expelled reverence and have taken away prayers from the presence of God.⁵Porque tu boca revela tu iniquidad, adoptas el lenguaje de los arteros. For your iniquity has mislead your mouth, and you imitate the tongue of blasphemers.⁶Tu propia boca, y no yo, te condena, tus mismos labios testifican contra ti. Your own mouth will condemn you, not I; and your own lips will answer you.⁷¿Naciste tú el primero de los hombres, saliendo a la luz antes que los montes? Are you the first man who was born, or were you formed before the hills?⁸¿Escuchaste tú los secretos de Dios, secuestraste para ti la sabiduría? Have you heard the intentions of God, and will his wisdom be inferior to you?⁹¿Qué sabes tú, que no sepamos nosotros? ¿En qué nos supera tu sabiduría? What do you know, about which we are ignorant? What do you understand that we do not know?¹⁰También entre nosotros hay cabezas canas y hombres de edad, más avanzados en días que tu padre. There are with us both aged and ancient men, even more senior than your fathers.¹¹¿Acaso tienes en poco las consolaciones de Dios, y las suaves palabras que se te dicen. Is it so important that God should console you? But your own depraved words prevent this.¹²¿Adónde te lleva tu corazón, y qué significa el pestañeo de tus ojos? Why does your heart exalt you, and why do you gaze with your eyes, as if thinking great things?¹³¿Por qué diriges contra Dios tu ira, y profiere tu boca tales palabras? Why does your spirit stir against God, so as to utter such speeches from your mouth?¹⁴¿Qué es el hombre para aparecer inocente; el nacido de mujer, para ser justo? What is man that he should be immaculate, and that he should appear just, having been born of woman?¹⁵Pues Él no se fía ni de sus santos; los mismos cielos no están limpios a su vista; Behold, among his holy ones not one is immutable, and even the heavens are not pure in his sight.¹⁶¿cuánto menos este ser, abominable y perverso, el hombre, que bebe como agua la iniquidad? The impious is arrogant for all his days, and the number of the years of his tyranny is uncertain.²¹Voz de angustia suena en sus oídos; en plena paz le asalta el devastador. The sound of terror is always in his ears; and when there is peace, he always suspects treason.²²Él mismo pierde la esperanza de escapar a las tinieblas; se siente amenazado de la espada; He does not believe that it is possible for him to be turned from darkness into the light, for he sees around him the sword on every side.²³vaga buscando alimento, (diciendo): ¿En dónde está? sabe que es inminente el día de las tinieblas; When he moves himself to seek bread, he knows that the day of darkness has been prepared for his hand.²⁴le aterran angustia y tribulación, le acometen como un rey listo para la guerra. Tribulation will terrify him, and anguish will prevail over him, like a king who is being prepared to go to battle.²⁵Pues extendió su mano contra Dios, se exaltó contra el Todopoderoso. For he has extended his hand against God, and he has strengthened himself against the Almighty.²⁶Corre contra Él, erguido el cuello, ocultándose detrás de sus escudos, He has rushed against him with his throat exposed, and he has been armed with a fat neck.²⁷cubierto el rostro con su gordura, con capas de grosura sus lomos. Thickness has covered his face, and lard hangs down from his sides.²⁸Vive en ciudades asoladas, en casas inhabitadas, destinadas a convertirse en ruinas. He has lived in desolate cities and deserted houses, which have been turned into tombs.²⁹Por eso no será rico, sus bienes no durarán, y su hacienda no se extenderá sobre la tierra. He will not be enriched, nor will his basic necessities endure, nor will he establish his root in the earth.³⁰Nunca escapará a las tinieblas; la llama abrasará sus renuevos, y él será llevado por el soplo de la boca de (Dios). He will not withdraw from the darkness; the flame will burn up his branches, and he will be defeated by the breath of his own mouth.³¹No confíe en una engañosa vanidad; la misma vanidad será su recompensa. He will not believe, being vainly deceived by error, that he could be redeemed at any price.³²Ella le llegará antes que se acaben sus días, y sus ramas no reverdecerán ya más. Before his time is completed, he will pass into ruin and his hands will wither away.³³Sacudirá como la vid sus uvas, aun estando en cierne, y como el olivo dejará caer su flor. He will be wounded like a grapevine, when its cluster is in first flower, and like an olive tree that casts off its flower.³⁴La casa del impío es estéril, y el fuego consume la morada del que se deja sobornar. For the congregation of the hypocrites is fruitless, and fire will devour the tabernacles of those who love to accept money.³⁵Concibe penas y engendra maldades, nutriendo en su seno el engaño.” He has conceived sorrow, and he has brought forth iniquity, and his womb prepares deceit.
