1Saliendo de allí, vino a su tierra, y sus discípulos lo acompañaron. And departing from there, he went away to his own country; and his disciples followed him.2Llegado el sábado, se puso a enseñar en la sinagoga, y la numerosa concurrencia que lo escuchaba estaba llena de admiración, y decía: “¿De dónde le viene esto? ¿Y qué es esta sabiduría que le ha sido dada? ¿Y estos grandes milagros obrados por sus manos? And when the Sabbath arrived, he began to teach in the synagogue. And many, upon hearing him, were amazed at his doctrine, saying: “Where did this one get all these things?” and, “What is this wisdom, which has been given to him?” and, “Such powerful deeds, which are wrought by his hands!”3¿No es Este el carpintero, el hijo de María, el hermano de Santiago, de José, de Judas y de Simón? ¿Y sus hermanas no están aquí entre nosotros?” Y se escandalizaban de Él. “Is this not the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joseph, and Jude, and Simon? Are not his sisters also here with us?” And they took great offense at him.4Mas Jesús les dijo: “No hay profeta sin honor sino en su tierra, entre sus parientes y en su casa”. And Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor, except in his own country, and in his own house, and among his own kindred.”5Y no pudo hacer allí ningún milagro; solamente puso las manos sobre unos pocos enfermos, y los sanó. And he was not able to perform any miracles there, except that he cured a few of the infirm by laying his hands on them.6Y se quedó asombrado de la falta de fe de ellos. Y recorrió las aldeas a la redonda, enseñando. And he wondered, because of their unbelief, and he traveled around in the villages, teaching.7Entonces, llamando a los doce, comenzó a enviarlos, de dos en dos, dándoles poder sobre los espíritus inmundos, And he called the twelve. And he began to send them out in twos, and he gave them authority over unclean spirits.8y les ordenó que no llevasen nada para el camino, sino solo un bastón; ni pan, ni alforja, ni dinero en el cinto, And he instructed them not to take anything for the journey, except a staff: no traveling bag, no bread, and no money belt,9sino que fuesen calzados de sandalias, y no se pusieran dos túnicas. but to wear sandals, and not to wear two tunics.10Y les dijo: “Dondequiera que entréis en una casa, quedaos allí hasta el momento de salir del lugar. And he said to them: “Whenever you have entered into a house, stay there until you depart from that place.11Y si en algún lugar no quieren recibiros y no se os escucha, salid de allí y sacudid el polvo de la planta de vuestros pies para testimonio a ellos”. And whoever will neither receive you, nor listen to you, as you go away from there, shake off the dust from your feet as a testimony against them.”12Partieron, pues, y predicaron el arrepentimiento. And going out, they were preaching, so that people would repent.13Expulsaban también a muchos demonios, y ungían con óleo a muchos enfermos y los sanaban. And they cast out many demons, and they anointed many of the sick with oil and healed them.14El rey Herodes oyó hablar (de Jesús), porque su nombre se había hecho célebre y dijo: “Juan el Bautista ha resucitado de entre los muertos, y por eso las virtudes obran en Él”. And king Herod heard of it, (for his name had become well-known) and he said: “John the Baptist has risen again from the dead, and because of this, miracles are at work in him.”15Otros decían: “Es Elías” otros: “Es un profeta, tal como uno de los (antiguos) profetas”. But others were saying, “Because it is Elijah.” Still others were saying, “Because he is a prophet, like one of the prophets.”16No obstante esos rumores, Herodes decía: “Aquel Juan, a quien hice decapitar, ha resucitado”. When Herod had heard it, he said, “John whom I beheaded, the same has risen again from the dead.”17Herodes, en efecto, había mandado arrestar a Juan, y lo había encadenado en la cárcel, a causa de Herodías, la mujer de Filipo, su hermano, pues la había tomado por su mujer. For Herod himself had sent to capture John, and had chained him in prison, because of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip; for he had married her.18Porque Juan decía a Herodes: “No te es lícito tener a la mujer de tu hermano”. For John was saying to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.”19Herodías le guardaba rencor, y quería hacerlo morir, y no podía. Now Herodias was devising treachery against him; and she wanted to kill him, but she was unable.20Porque Herodes tenía respeto por Juan, sabiendo que era un varón justo y santo, y lo amparaba: al oírlo se quedaba muy perplejo y sin embargo lo escuchaba con gusto. For Herod was apprehensive of John, knowing him to be a just and holy man, and so he guarded him. And he heard that he was accomplishing many things, and so he listened to him willingly.21Llegó, empero, una ocasión favorable, cuando Herodes, en su cumpleaños, dio un festín a sus grandes, a los oficiales, y a los personajes de Galilea. And when an opportune time had arrived, Herod held a feast on his birthday, with the leaders, and the tribunes, and the first rulers of Galilee.22Entró (en esta ocasión) la hija de Herodías y se congració por sus danzas con Herodes y los convidados. Dijo, entonces, el rey a la muchacha. “Pídeme lo que quieras, yo te lo daré”. And when the daughter of the same Herodias had entered, and danced, and pleased Herod, along with those who were at table with him, the king said to the girl, “Request from me whatever you want, and I will give it to you.”23Y le juró: “Todo lo que me pidas, te lo daré, aunque sea la mitad de mi reino”. And he swore to her, “Anything that you request, I will give to you, even up to half my kingdom.”24Ella salió y preguntó a su madre: “¿Qué he de pedir?” Esta dijo: “La cabeza de Juan el Bautista”. And when she had gone out, she said to her mother, “What shall I request?” But her mother said, “The head of John the Baptist.”25Y entrando luego a prisa ante el rey, le hizo su petición: “Quiero que al instante me des sobre un plato la cabeza de Juan el Bautista”. And immediately, when she had entered with haste to the king, she petitioned him, saying: “I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.”26Se afligió mucho el rey; pero en atención a su juramento y a los convidados, no quiso rechazarla. And the king was greatly saddened. But because of his oath, and because of those who were sitting with him at table, he was not willing to disappoint her.27Acto continuo envió, pues, el rey un verdugo, ordenándole traer la cabeza de Juan. So, having sent an executioner, he instructed that his head be brought on a platter.28Este fue, lo decapitó en la prisión, y trajo sobre un plato la cabeza que entregó a la muchacha, y la muchacha la dio a su madre. And he beheaded him in prison, and he brought his head on a platter. And he gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it her mother.29Sus discípulos luego que lo supieron, vinieron a llevarse el cuerpo y lo pusieron en un sepulcro. When his disciples heard about it, they came and took his body, and they placed it in a tomb.30Nuevamente reunidos con Jesús, le refirieron los apóstoles todo cuanto habían hecho y enseñado. And the Apostles, returning to Jesus, reported to him everything that they had done and taught.31Entonces les dijo: “Venid vosotros aparte, a un lugar desierto, para que descanséis un poco”. Porque muchos eran los que venían e iban, y ellos no tenían siquiera tiempo para comer. And he said to them, “Go out alone, into a deserted place, and rest for a little while.” For there were so many who were coming and going, that they did not even have time to eat.32Partieron, pues, en una barca, hacia un lugar desierto y apartado. And climbing into a boat, they went away to a deserted place alone.33Pero (las gentes) los vieron cuando se iban, y muchos los conocieron; y, acudieron allí, a pie, de todas las ciudades, y llegaron antes que ellos. And they saw them going away, and many knew about it. And together they ran by foot from all the cities, and they arrived before them.34Al desembarcar, vio una gran muchedumbre, y tuvo compasión de ellos, porque eran como ovejas sin pastor, y se puso a enseñarles muchas cosas. And Jesus, going out, saw a great multitude. And he took pity on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd, and he began to teach them many things.35Siendo ya la hora muy avanzada, sus discípulos se acercaron a Él, y le dijeron: “Este lugar es desierto, y ya es muy tarde. And when many hours had now passed, his disciples drew near to him, saying: “This is a deserted place, and the hour is now late.36Despídelos, para que se vayan a las granjas y aldeas del contorno a comprarse qué comer”. Send them away, so that by going out to nearby villages and towns, they might buy provisions for themselves to eat.”37Mas Él les respondió y dijo: “Dadles de comer vosotros”. Le replicaron: “¿Acaso habremos de comprar pan por doscientos denarios, a fin de darles de comer? And responding, he said to them, “Give them something to eat yourselves.” And they said to him, “Let us go out and buy bread for two hundred denarii, and then we will give them something to eat.”38Les preguntó: “¿Cuántos panes tenéis? Id a ver”. Habiéndose cerciorado, le dijeron: “Cinco panes y dos peces”. And he said to them: “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” And when they had found out, they said, “Five, and two fish.”39Y les ordenó hacerlos acampar a todos, por grupos, sobre la hierba verde. And he instructed them to make them all sit down in groups on the green grass.40Se sentaron, pues, en cuadros, de a ciento y de a cincuenta. And they sat down in divisions by hundreds and by fifties.41Entonces, tomó los cinco panes y los dos peces, levantó los ojos al cielo, bendijo los panes, los partió y los dio a los discípulos, para que ellos los sirviesen. Y repartió también los dos peces entre todos. And having received the five loaves and the two fish, gazing up to heaven, he blessed and broke the bread, and he gave it to his disciples to set before them. And the two fish he divided among them all.42Comieron todos hasta saciarse. And they all ate and were satisfied.43Y recogieron doce canastos llenos de los trozos y de los peces. And they brought together the remainder: twelve baskets full of fragments and of fish.44Los que habían comido los panes, eran cinco mil varones. Now those who ate were five thousand men.45Inmediatamente obligó a sus discípulos a reembarcarse y a adelantársele hacia la otra orilla, en dirección a Betsaida, mientras Él despedía a la gente. And without delay he urged his disciples to climb into the boat, so that they might precede him across the sea to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the people.46Habiéndola, en efecto despedido, se fue al monte a orar. And when he had dismissed them, he went to the mountain to pray.47Cuando llegó la noche, la barca estaba en medio del mar, y Él solo en tierra. And when it was late, the boat was in the midst of the sea, and he was alone on the land.48Y viendo que ellos hacían esfuerzos penosos por avanzar, porque el viento les era contrario, vino hacia ellos, cerca de la cuarta vela de la noche, andando sobre el mar, y parecía querer pasarlos de largo. And seeing them struggling to row, (for the wind was against them,) and about the fourth watch of the night, he came to them, walking upon the sea. And he intended to pass by them.49Pero ellos, al verlo andando sobre el mar, creyeron que era un fantasma y gritaron; But when they saw him walking upon the sea, they thought it was an apparition, and they cried out.50porque todos lo vieron y se sobresaltaron. Mas Él, al instante, les habló y les dijo: “¡Ánimo! soy Yo. No tengáis miedo”. For they all saw him, and they were very disturbed. And immediately he spoke with them, and he said to them: “Be strengthened in faith. It is I. Do not be afraid.”51Subió entonces con ellos a la barca, y se calmó el viento. Y la extrañeza de ellos llegó a su colmo. And he climbed into the boat with them, and the wind ceased. And they became even more astonished within themselves.52Es que no habían comprendido lo de los panes, porque sus corazones estaban endurecidos. For they did not understand about the bread. For their heart had been blinded.53Terminada la travesía, llegaron a tierra de Genesaret, y atracaron. And when they had crossed over, they arrived in the land of Genesaret, and they reached the shore.54Apenas salieron de la barca, lo conocieron, And when they had disembarked from the boat, the people immediately recognized him.55y recorrieron toda esa región; y empezaron a transportar en camillas los enfermos a los lugares donde oían que Él estaba. And running throughout that entire region, they began to carry on beds those who had maladies, to where they heard that he would be.56Y en todas partes adonde entraba: aldeas, ciudades, granjas, colocaban a los enfermos en las plazas, y le suplicaban que los dejasen tocar aunque no fuese más que la franja de su manto; y cuantos lo tocaban, quedaban sanos. And in whichever place he entered, in towns or villages or cities, they placed the infirm in the main streets, and they pleaded with him that they might touch even the hem of his garment. And as many as touched him were made healthy.
