Proverbios 13
1El hijo sabio acepta la corrección de su padre; el burlador no hace caso de la reprensión. A wise son is the doctrine of his father. But he who ridicules does not listen when he is reproved.2El hombre (de bien) se hartará del fruto de su boca, el alma de los pérfidos, en cambio, de la violencia. From the fruit of his own mouth, a man shall be satisfied with good things. But the soul of betrayers is iniquity.3Quien guarda su boca, guarda su alma; quien habla inconsideradamente se arruina a sí mismo. Whoever guards his mouth guards his soul. But whoever gives no consideration to his speech shall experience misfortunes.4El perezoso tiene deseos que no se cumplen, el alma del laborioso se saciará. The lazy one is willing and then not willing. But the soul of he who labors shall be made fat.5El justo aborrece la palabra mentirosa, el impío infama y obra vergonzosamente. The just shall detest a lying word. But the impious confound and will be confounded.6La justicia protege los pasos del hombre recto, la malicia causa la ruina del pecador. Justice guards the way of the innocent. But impiety undermines the sinner.7Hay quien se jacta de rico, y nada tiene, y quien se hace el pobre, y es acaudalado. One is like the rich, though he has nothing. And another is like the poor, though he has many riches.8Con las riquezas el hombre (rico) rescata su vida; el pobre, empero, no necesita temer la amenaza. The redemption of a man’s life is his riches. But he who is poor cannot tolerate correction.9La luz de los justos difunde alegría, en tanto que la lámpara de los impíos se apaga. The light of the just enriches. But the lamp of the impious will be extinguished.10La soberbia no causa sino querellas, la sabiduría está con los que toman consejo. Among the arrogant, there are always conflicts. But those who do everything with counsel are ruled by wisdom.11Los bienes ganados sin esfuerzo tienden a desaparecer, mas el que los junta a fuerza de trabajo los aumenta. Substance obtained in haste will be diminished. But what is collected by hand, little by little, shall be multiplied.12Esperanza que se dilata hace enfermo el corazón; pero es árbol de vida el deseo cumplido. Hope, when it is delayed, afflicts the soul. The arrival of the desired is a tree of life.13Quien menosprecia la palabra se pierde; quien respeta el precepto será recompensado. Whoever denounces something obligates himself for the future. But whoever fears a lesson shall turn away in peace. Deceitful souls wander into sins. The just are merciful and compassionate.14La enseñanza del sabio es fuente de vida, para escapar de los lazos de la muerte. The law of the wise is a fountain of life, so that he may turn aside from the ruin of death.15Buenos modales ganan favores, mas la conducta de los pérfidos queda estéril. Good doctrine bestows grace. In the way of the contemptuous, there is a chasm.16Todo varón prudente obra con reflexión, el necio derrama su locura. The discerning do everything with counsel. But whoever is senseless discloses his stupidity.17El mensajero infiel se precipita en la desgracia, el mensajero fiel se procura salud. The messenger of the impious will fall into evil. But a faithful ambassador shall prosper.18Pobreza e ignominia a quien desecha la corrección, honra a quien escucha la amonestación. Destitution and disgrace are for those who abandon discipline. But whoever agrees with a reproof shall be glorified.19Deseo cumplido recrea al alma, pero el necio abomina apartarse del mal. The desired, when perfected, shall delight the soul. The foolish detest those who flee from evils.20Quien anda con sabios, sabio será, quien con necios, acabará siendo necio. Whoever keeps step with the wise shall be wise. A friend of the foolish will become like them.21A los pecadores los persigue la desventura, mas los justos serán recompensados con bienes. Evil pursues sinners. And good things shall be distributed to the just.22Los buenos tienen como herederos los hijos de los hijos; mas la hacienda del pecador queda reservada para el justo. The good leave behind heirs: children and grandchildren. And the substance of the sinner is preserved for the just.23Los barbechos de los pobres dan pan en abundancia, pero hay quien disipa (la hacienda) por falta de juicio. Much nourishment is in the fallow land of the fathers. But for others, it is gathered without judgment.24Quien hace poco uso de la vara quiere mal a su hijo; el que lo ama, le aplica pronto el castigo. He who spares the rod hates his son. But he who loves him urgently instructs him.25El justo come y satisface su apetito, en tanto que el vientre del malo padece hambre. The just eats and fills his soul. But the belly of the impious is never satisfied.
