Proverbios 16
1Del hombre es preparar el corazón, mas la respuesta de la lengua viene de Yahvé. It is for man to prepare the soul, and for the Lord to govern the tongue.2Todos los caminos parecen limpios a los ojos del hombre, pero es Dios quien pesa los espíritus. All the ways of a man are open to his eyes; the Lord is the one who weighs spirits.3Encomienda a Yahvé tus planes, y tendrán éxito tus proyectos. Open your works to the Lord, and your intentions will be set in order.4Todo lo ha creado Yahvé para su fin, aun al impío para el día aciago. The Lord has wrought all things because of himself. Likewise the impious is for the evil day.5Todo altivo de corazón es abominación para Yahvé, será castigado indefectiblemente. All the arrogant are an abomination to the Lord. Even if hand will be joined to hand, he is not innocent. The beginning of a good way is to do justice. And this is more acceptable with God than to immolate sacrifices.6Con misericordia y fidelidad se expía la culpa, y con el temor de Dios (el hombre) se aparta del mal. By mercy and truth, iniquity is redeemed. And by the fear of the Lord, one turns away from evil.7Cuando los caminos de un hombre son agradables a Yahvé, Este reconcilia con él a sus enemigos. When the ways of man will please the Lord, he will convert even his enemies to peace.8Mejor poco con justicia, que grandes ganancias con injusticia. Better is a little with justice, than many fruits with iniquity.9El corazón del hombre proyecta sus caminos, pero Yahvé dirige sus pasos. The heart of man disposes his way. But it is for Lord to direct his steps.10Los labios del rey pronuncian oráculos; no peca su boca cuando dicta sentencia. Foreknowledge is in the lips of the king. His mouth shall not err in judgment.11Balanza y platillos justos son de Dios, y obra suya son todas las pesas de la bolsa. Weights and scales are judgments of the Lord. And all the stones in the bag are his work.12Aborrecen los reyes a los malhechores, pues la justicia es el apoyo del trono. Those who act impiously are abominable to the king. For the throne is made firm by justice.13Placen a los reyes los labios justos, y les agradan los que hablan con rectitud. Just lips are the will of kings. He who speaks honestly shall be loved.14La ira del rey anuncio es de muerte; pero el varón sabio la aplaca. The indignation of a king is a herald of death. And the wise man will appease it.15El semblante alegre del rey significa vida, y su favor es como nube de lluvia primaveral. In the cheerfulness of the king’s countenance, there is life. And his clemency is like belated rain.16Adquirir sabiduría vale más que el oro, y mejor que la plata es poseer la inteligencia. Possess wisdom, for it is better than gold. And acquire prudence, for it is more precious than silver.17La senda de los justos es huir del mal; guarda su alma el que guarda sus pasos. The path of the just turns away from evils. He who guards his soul preserves his way.18La soberbia precede a la caída, y la altivez de espíritu a la ruina. Arrogance precedes destruction. And the spirit is exalted before a fall.19Mejor ser humilde con los humildes, que repartir despojos con los soberbios. It is better to be humbled with the meek, than to divide spoils with the arrogant.20El que está atento a la palabra, saca provecho, y el que confía en Yahvé es dichoso. The learned in word shall find good things. And whoever hopes in the Lord is blessed.21El sabio de corazón es llamado prudente; y la dulzura en el hablar aumenta los frutos de la enseñanza. Whoever is wise in heart shall be called prudent. And whoever is sweet in eloquence shall attain to what is greater.22Fuente de vida es la sabiduría para quien la posee pero el castigo del necio es su necedad. Learning is a fountain of life to one who possesses it. The doctrine of the foolish is senseless.23El corazón del sabio es maestro de su boca, en sus labios crece la doctrina. The heart of the wise shall instruct his mouth and add grace to his lips.24Panal de miel son las palabras amables; delicia del alma y medicina de los huesos. Careful words are a honeycomb: sweet to the soul and healthful to the bones.25Camino hay que al hombre le parece recto, pero en su remate está la muerte. There is a way which seems right to a man, and its end result leads to death.26El que se afana, para sí se afana; a esto le estimula su boca. The soul of the laborer labors for himself, because his mouth has driven him to it.27El hombre perverso se cava la desventura; sobre sus labios hay como llamas de fuego. The impious man digs up evil, and in his lips is a burning fire.28El hombre depravado provoca contiendas, y el chismoso siembra discordia entre los amigos. A perverse man stirs up lawsuits. And one who is verbose divides leaders.29El inicuo halaga a su prójimo y así lo lleva por malos caminos. A man of iniquity entices his friend, and he leads him along a way that is not good.30Cuando uno guiña los ojos maquina maldades, y cuando se muerde los labios, las lleva a cabo. Whoever, with astonished eyes, thinks up depravities, biting his lips, accomplishes evil.31Corona de gloria es la canicie, se la halla en el camino de la justicia. Old age is a crown of dignity, when it is found in the ways of justice.32El hombre sosegado es superior al valiente, y el que es señor de sí vale más que el conquistador de una ciudad. A patient man is better than a strong one. And whoever rules his soul is better than one who assaults cities.33En el regazo se echan las suertes, pero de Yahvé depende toda decisión. Lots are cast into the lap, but they are tempered by the Lord.
