Proverbios 17
A wise servant shall rule over foolish sons, and he will divide the inheritance among brothers.3El crisol prueba la plata, la hornaza el oro, mas los corazones los prueba Yahvé. Just as silver is tested by fire, and gold is tested in the furnace, so also does the Lord test hearts.4El malvado está atento a labios que infaman; el mentiroso da oídos a la lengua maligna. The evil obey an unjust tongue. And the false are submissive to lying lips.5Quien escarnece al pobre insulta a su Hacedor; y el que se alegra del mal no quedará impune. Whoever despises the poor rebukes his Maker. And whoever rejoices in the ruin of another will not go unpunished.6Corona de los ancianos son los hijos de los hijos, y gloria de los hijos, sus padres. Sons of sons are the crown of old age. And the glory of sons is their fathers.7Al necio no le esta bien el lenguaje sentencioso, ¡cuánto menos al príncipe una lengua mentirosa! Well-chosen words are not fitting for the foolish, nor are lying lips fitting for a leader.8Piedra preciosa es la dádiva a los ojos del que la recibe, a cualquier parte que se vuelva tiene éxito. The expectation of those who stand ready is a most pleasing jewel. Whichever way he turns himself, he understands prudently.9Quien cubre una falta, conquista amistad; quien la propala, desune a los amigos. Whoever conceals an offense seeks friendships. Whoever repeats the words of another separates allies.10Da más resultado la reprensión en un sensato, que cien azotes en un necio. A correction benefits more with a wise man, than a hundred stripes with a fool.11El malo no busca más que revueltas; pero le será enviado un cruel mensaje. The evil one continually seeks conflicts. But a cruel Angel shall be sent against him.12Mejor es dar con una osa que perdió sus cachorros, que con un loco en su locura. It is more expedient to meet a bear robbed of her young, than the foolish trusting in his own folly.13Quien devuelve mal por bien, no verá su casa libre de desventura. Whoever repays evil for good, evil shall not withdraw from his house.14Comenzar un pleito es dar suelta a las aguas; retírate antes que recrudezca la querella. Whoever releases the water is the head of the conflict. And just before he suffers contempt, he abandons judgment.15Quien absuelve a un reo, y quien condena a un justo, ambos son abominables ante Yahvé. Those who justify the impious, and those who condemn the just, both are abominable with God.16¿De qué sirve en manos del insensato la plata? ¿Podrá acaso comprar sabiduría, ya que no posee entendimiento? What does it profit the foolish to have riches, when he is not able to buy wisdom? Whoever makes his house high seeks ruin. And whoever shuns learning shall fall into evils.17Un amigo ama en todo tiempo, es un hermano nacido para tiempos adversos. Whoever is a friend loves at all times. And a brother is proved by distress.18Hombre falto de juicio es quien estrecha la mano, y sale por fiador de otros. A foolish man will clap his hands, when he makes a pledge for his friend.19Quien busca riñas ama el pecado; el que alza su puerta marcha hacia la ruina. Whoever dwells on discord loves disputes. And whoever exalts his door seeks ruin.20El corazón perverso no halla dicha, y la lengua dolosa se acarrea calamidad. Whoever is of a perverse heart shall not find good. And whoever turns his tongue shall fall into evil.21Quien engendra a un necio para pesar suyo será; no tendrá alegría el que lo engendró. A foolish one is born into his own disgrace. But his father will not rejoice in one who is senseless.22El corazón alegre es una excelente medicina; mas un espíritu abatido reseca los huesos. A joyful soul makes a lifetime flourish. A gloomy spirit dries out the bones.23El impío acepta regalos ocultamente, para torcer los caminos de la justicia. The impious receives gifts from the bosom, so that he may pervert the paths of judgment.24Ante el rostro del sensato está la sabiduría, pero los ojos del necio vagan hasta el cabo del mundo. Prudence shines from the face of the wise. The eyes of the foolish are on the ends of the earth.25El hijo necio es la aflicción de su padre, y la amargura de la que le dio a luz. A foolish son is the anger of the father and the grief of the mother who conceived him.26No es bueno castigar al justo, ni condenar a príncipes por su rectitud. It is not good to inflict damage on the just, nor to strike the leader who judges uprightly.27Ahorra sus palabras quien posee la sabiduría, y es de ánimo reservado el que tiene inteligencia. Whoever moderates his words is learned and prudent. And a man of learning has a precious spirit.28Aun el necio, si calla, es reputado por sabio, y por inteligente, si cierra sus labios. If he would remain silent, even the foolish would be considered wise, and if he closes his lips, intelligent.
