Proverbios 20
1El vino es mofador, el licor alborotador; nunca será sabio el que a ellos se entrega. It is a luxurious thing, wine, and inebriation is tumultuous. Anyone who is delighted by this will not be wise.2Semejante al rugido de león es el furor del rey; quien provoca su ira peca contra sí mismo. Just like the roaring of a lion, so also is the dread of a king. Whoever provokes him sins in his own soul.3Es honor del hombre abstenerse de altercados; todos los necios se meten en pendencias. Honor is for the man who separates himself from contentions. But all the foolish meddle in altercations.4A causa del frío no ara el perezoso, por eso mendigará en vano en la siega. Because of the cold, the lazy one was not willing to plough. Therefore, in the summer, he will beg, and it will not be given to him.5Aguas profundas son los pensamientos del corazón humano, mas el sabio sabe sacarlos. Counsel in the heart of a man is like deep waters. But a wise man will draw it out.6Muchos se jactan de su bondad, pero un hombre fiel, ¿quién lo hallará? Many men are called merciful. But who will find a faithful man?7El justo procede sin tacha, bienaventurados sus hijos después de él. The just who walks in his simplicity shall leave behind him blessed sons.8El rey, sentado como juez en el trono, con su sola mirada ahuyenta todo lo malo. The king who sits on the throne of judgment scatters all evil with his gaze.9¿Quién podrá decir: “He purificado mi corazón, limpio estoy de mi pecado”? Who is able to say: “My heart is clean. I am pure from sin?”10Peso falso y falsa medida son dos cosas abominables ante Yahvé. Diverse weights, diverse measures: both are abominable with God.11Ya el niño muestra por sus acciones si su conducta ha de ser pura y recta. A child may be understood by his interests: whether his works may be clean and upright.12El oído que oye, y el ojo que ve, ambas son obras de Yahvé. The hearing ear and the seeing eye: the Lord has made them both.13Huye el sueño, para que no empobrezcas; abre tus ojos, y te saciarás de pan. Do not love sleep, lest deprivation oppress you. Open your eyes and be satisfied with bread.14“Malo, malo”, dice el comprador, pero después de haber comprado se gloría. “It is bad, it is bad,” says every buyer; and when he has withdrawn, then he will boast.15Hay oro y perlas en abundancia, mas la alhaja más preciosa son los labios instruidos. There is gold, and there are a multitude of jewels. But lips of knowledge are a precious vessel.16Tómate el vestido del que salió fiador por un extraño, y exígele una prenda por lo que debe al extranjero. Take away the vestments of him who stands up to vouch for a stranger, and take a pledge from him instead of from outsiders.17El pan injustamente adquirido le gusta al hombre, pero después se llena su boca de guijos. The bread of lies is sweet to a man. But afterwards, his mouth will be filled with pebbles.18Los consejos aseguran el éxito de los proyectos; no hagas la guerra sin previa deliberación. Plans are strengthened by counsels. And wars are to be handled by governments.19No tengas trato con el que revela secretos y es chismoso, ni con aquel cuyos labios siempre se abren. Do not become involved with him who reveals mysteries, and who walks deceitfully, and who enlarges his lips.20Si uno maldice a su padre y a su madre, su antorcha se apagará en densas tinieblas. Whoever curses his father and mother, his lamp will be extinguished in the midst of darkness.21Lo que uno comenzó a adquirir apresuradamente, no tiene fin venturoso. When an inheritance is obtained hastily in the beginning, in the end it will be without a blessing.22No digas: “Yo devolveré el mal”; espera en Yahvé, y Él te salvará. Do not say, “I will repay evil.” Wait for the Lord, and he will free you.23Yahvé abomina las pesas falsas, y falsa balanza es cosa mala. Diverse weights are an abomination with the Lord. A deceitful balance is not good.24Es Yahvé quien dirige los pasos del hombre; ¿qué sabe el hombre de su destino? The steps of men are directed by the Lord. But who is the man able to understand his own way?25Es un lazo para el hombre decir a la ligera: “Consagrado”, sin meditar antes de hacer el voto. It is ruin for a man to devour what is holy, or, after making vows, to retract them.26El rey sabio avienta a los malhechores, y hace pasar sobre ellos la rueda. A wise king scatters the impious and bends an archway over them.27Antorcha de Yahvé es el espíritu del hombre, escudriña todos los secretos del corazón. The spirit of a man is a lamp to the Lord, which investigates all the secrets of the inner self.28Bondad y fidelidad guardan al rey, y la clemencia le afirma el trono. Mercy and truth guard the king, and his throne is strengthened by clemency.29Los jóvenes se glorían de su fuerza, el adorno de los ancianos son las canas. The joy of youths is their strength. And the dignity of old men is their grey hairs.30Los azotes que hieren son medicina contra el mal, como las llagas que penetran hasta el interior del cuerpo. The bruise of a wound, as well as scourges, shall wipe away evils in the more secret places of the inner self.
