1¿Qué diremos luego que obtuvo Abrahán, nuestro Padre según la carne? So then, what shall we say that Abraham had achieved, who is our father according to the flesh?2Porque si Abrahán fue justificado por obras, tiene de qué gloriarse; mas no delante de Dios. For if Abraham was justified by works, he would have glory, but not with God.3Pues ¿qué dice la Escritura? “Abrahán creyó a Dios, y le fue imputado a justicia”. For what does Scripture say? “Abram believed God, and it was reputed to him unto justice.”4Ahora bien, a aquel que trabaja, el jornal no se le cuenta como gracia, sino como deuda; But for he who works, wages are not accounted according to grace, but according to debt.5mas al que no trabaja, sino que cree en Aquel que justifica al impío, su fe se le reputa por justicia, Yet truly, for he who does not work, but who believes in him who justifies the impious, his faith is reputed unto justice, according to the purpose of the grace of God.6así como también David pregona la bienaventuranza del hombre a quien Dios imputa la justicia sin obras: Similarly, David also declares the blessedness of a man, to whom God brings justice without works:7“Bienaventurados aquellos a quienes fueron perdonadas las iniquidades, y cuyos pecados han sido cubiertos. “Blessed are they whose iniquities have been forgiven and whose sins have been covered.8Bienaventurado el hombre a quien el Señor no imputa su pecado”. Blessed is the man to whom the Lord has not imputed sin.”9Pues bien, esta bienaventuranza ¿es solo para los circuncisos, o también para los incircuncisos?, porque decimos que a Abrahán la fe le fue imputada a justicia. Does this blessedness, then, remain only in the circumcised, or is it even in the uncircumcised? For we say that faith was reputed to Abraham unto justice.10¿Mas cómo le fue imputada? ¿Antes de la circuncisión o después de ella? No después de la circuncisión, sino antes. But then how was it reputed? In circumcision or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision.11Y recibió el signo de la circuncisión como sello de la justicia de la fe que obtuvo, siendo aún incircunciso, para que fuese padre de todos los creyentes no circuncidados, a fin de que también a ellos se les imputase la justicia; For he received the sign of circumcision as a symbol of the justice of that faith which exists apart from circumcision, so that he might be the father of all those who believe while uncircumcised, so that it might also be reputed to them unto justice,12como asimismo padre de los circuncisos, de aquellos que no solamente han recibido la circuncisión, sino que también siguen los pasos de la fe que nuestro padre Abrahán tenía siendo aún incircunciso. and he might be the father of circumcision, not only for those who are of circumcision, but even for those who follow the footsteps of that faith which is in the uncircumcision of our father Abraham.13Pues no por medio de la Ley fue hecha la promesa a Abrahán, o a su descendencia, de ser heredero del mundo, sino por la justicia que viene de la fe. For the Promise to Abraham, and to his posterity, that he would inherit the world, was not through the law, but through the justice of faith.14Porque si los de la Ley son herederos, la fe ha venido a ser vana, y la promesa de ningún valor, For if those who are of the law are the heirs, then faith becomes empty and the Promise is abolished.15dado que la Ley obra ira; porque donde no hay Ley, tampoco hay transgresión. For the law works unto wrath. And where there is no law, there is no law-breaking.16De ahí (que la promesa se hiciera) por la fe, para que fuese de gracia, a fin de que la promesa permanezca firme para toda la posteridad, no solo para la que es de la Ley, sino también para la que sigue la fe de Abrahán, el cual es el padre de todos nosotros, Because of this, it is from faith according to grace that the Promise is ensured for all posterity, not only for those who are of the law, but also for those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all before God,17—según está escrito: “Padre de muchas naciones te he constituido”— ante Aquel a quien creyó: Dios, el cual da vida a los muertos, y llama las cosas que (aún ) no son como si (ya) fuesen. in whom he believed, who revives the dead and who calls those things that do not exist into existence. For it is written: “I have established you as the father of many nations.”18Abrahán, esperando contra toda esperanza, creyó que vendría a ser padre de muchas naciones, según lo que había sido dicho: “Así será tu posteridad”. And he believed, with a hope beyond hope, so that he might become the father of many nations, according to what was said to him: “So shall your posterity be.”19Y no flaqueó en la fe al considerar su mismo cuerpo ya decrépito, teniendo él como cien años, ni el amortecimiento del seno de Sara; And he was not weakened in faith, nor did he consider his own body to be dead (though he was then almost one hundred years old), nor the womb of Sarah to be dead.20sino que, ante la promesa de Dios, no vaciló incrédulo, antes bien fue fortalecido por la fe dando gloria a Dios, And then, in the Promise of God, he did not hesitate out of distrust, but instead he was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God,21plenamente persuadido de que Él es poderoso para cumplir cuanto ha prometido. knowing most fully that whatever God has promised, he is also able to accomplish.22Por lo cual también le fue imputado a justicia; And for this reason, it was reputed to him unto justice.23y no para él solamente se escribió que le fue imputado, Now this has been written, that it was reputed to him unto justice, not only for his sake,24sino también para nosotros, a quienes ha de imputársenos; a los que creemos en Aquel que resucitó a Jesús Señor nuestro de entre los muertos; but also for our sake. For the same shall be reputed to us, if we believe in him who raised up our Lord Jesus Christ from the dead,25el cual fue entregado a causa de nuestros pecados y resucitado para nuestra justificación. who was handed over because of our offenses, and who rose again for our justification.
