1Digo verdad en Cristo, dándome testimonio mi conciencia en el Espíritu Santo, de que no miento: I am speaking the truth in Christ; I am not lying. My conscience offers testimony to me in the Holy Spirit,2siento tristeza grande y continuo dolor en mi corazón. because the sadness within me is great, and there is a continuous sorrow in my heart.3Porque desearía ser yo mismo anatema de Cristo por mis hermanos, deudos míos según la carne, For I was desiring that I myself might be anathemized from Christ, for the sake of my brothers, who are my kinsmen according to the flesh.4los israelitas, de quienes es la filiación, la gloria, las alianzas, la entrega de la Ley, el culto y las promesas; These are the Israelites, to whom belongs adoption as sons, and the glory and the testament, and the giving and following of the law, and the promises.5cuyos son los padres, y de quienes, según la carne, desciende Cristo, que es sobre todas las cosas, Dios bendito por los siglos. Amén. Theirs are the fathers, and from them, according to the flesh, is the Christ, who is over all things, blessed God, for all eternity. Amen.6No es que la palabra de Dios haya quedado sin efecto; porque no todos los que descienden de Israel, son Israel; But it is not that the Word of God has perished. For not all those who are Israelites are of Israel.7ni por el hecho de ser del linaje de Abrahán, son todos hijos; sino que “en Isaac será llamada tu descendencia”. And not all sons are the offspring of Abraham: “For your offspring will be invoked in Isaac.”8Esto es, no los hijos de la carne son hijos de Dios, sino que los hijos de la promesa son los considerados como descendencia. In other words, those who are the sons of God are not those who are sons of the flesh, but those who are sons of the Promise; these are considered to be the offspring.9Porque esta fue la palabra de la promesa: “Por este tiempo volveré, y Sara tendrá un hijo”. For the word of promise is this: “I will return at the proper time. And there shall be a son for Sarah.”10Y así sucedió no solamente con Sara, sino también con Rebeca, que concibió de uno solo, de Isaac nuestro Padre. And she was not alone. For Rebecca also, having conceived by Isaac our father, from one act,11Pues, no siendo aún nacidos (los hijos de ella), ni habiendo aún hecho cosa buena o mala —para que el designio de Dios se cumpliese, conforme a su elección, no en virtud de obras sino de Aquel que llama— when the children had not yet been born, and had not yet done anything good or bad (such that the purpose of God might be based on their choice),12le fue dicho a ella: “El mayor servirá al menor”; and not because of deeds, but because of a calling, it was said to her: “The elder shall serve the younger.”13según está escrito: “A Jacob amé, mas aborrecí a Esaú”. So also it was written: “I have loved Jacob, but I have hated Esau.”14¿Qué diremos, pues? ¿Qué hay injusticia por parte de Dios? De ninguna manera. What should we say next? Is there unfairness with God? Let it not be so!15Pues Él dice a Moisés: “Tendré misericordia de quien Yo quiera tener misericordia, y me apiadaré de quien Yo quiera apiadarme”. For to Moses he says: “I will pity whomever I pity. And I will offer mercy to whomever I will pity.”16Así que no es obra del que quiere, ni del que corre, sino de Dios que tiene misericordia. Therefore, it is not based on those who choose, nor on those who excel, but on God who takes pity.17Porque la Escritura dice al Faraón: “Para esto mismo Yo te levanté, para ostentar en ti mi poder y para que mi nombre sea anunciado en toda la tierra”. For Scripture says to the Pharaoh: “I have raised you up for this purpose, so that I may reveal my power by you, and so that my name may be announced to all the earth.”18De modo que de quien Él quiere, tiene misericordia; y a quien quiere, le endurece. Therefore, he takes pity on whomever he wills, and he hardens whomever he wills.19Pero me dirás: ¿Y por qué entonces vitupera? Pues ¿quién puede resistir a la voluntad de Él? And so, you would say to me: “Then why does he still find fault? For who can resist his will?”20Oh, hombre, ¿quién eres tú que pides cuentas a Dios? ¿Acaso el vaso dirá al que lo modeló: “¿Por qué me has hecho así?” O man, who are you to question God? How can the thing that has been formed say to the One who formed him: “Why have you made me this way?”21¿O es que el alfarero no tiene derecho sobre el barro, para hacer de la misma masa un vaso para honor y otro para uso vil? And does not the potter have the authority over the clay to make, from the same material, indeed, one vessel unto honor, yet truly another unto disgrace?22¿Qué, pues, si Dios, queriendo manifestar su ira y dar a conocer su poder, sufrió con mucha longanimidad los vasos de ira, destinados a perdición, What if God, wanting to reveal his wrath and to make his power known, endured, with much patience, vessels deserving wrath, fit to be destroyed,23a fin de manifestar las riquezas de su gloria en los vasos de misericordia, que Él preparó de antemano para gloria, so that he might reveal the wealth of his glory, within these vessels of mercy, which he has prepared unto glory?24a saber, nosotros, a los cuales Él llamó, no solo de entre los judíos, sino también de entre los gentiles? And so it is with those of us whom he has also called, not only from among the Jews, but even from among the Gentiles,25Como también dice en Oseas: “Llamaré pueblo mío al que no es mi pueblo, y amada a la no amada. just as he says in Hosea: “I will call those who were not my people, ‘my people,’ and she who was not beloved, ‘beloved,’ and she who had not obtained mercy, ‘one who has obtained mercy.’26Y sucederá que en el lugar donde se les dijo: No sois mi pueblo, allí mismo serán llamados hijos del Dios vivo”. And this shall be: in the place where it was said to them, ‘You are not my people,’ there they shall be called the sons of the living God.”27También Isaías clama sobre Israel: “Aun cuando el número de los hijos de Israel fuere como las arenas del mar, solo un resto será salvo; And Isaiah cried out on behalf of Israel: “When the number of the sons of Israel is like the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved.28porque el Señor hará su obra sobre la tierra rematando y cercenando”. For he shall complete his word, while abbreviating it out of equity. For the Lord shall accomplish a brief word upon the earth.”29El mismo Isaías ya antes había dicho: “Si el Señor de los ejércitos no nos hubiera dejado una semilla, habríamos venido a ser como Sodoma y asemejados a Gomorra”. And it is just as Isaiah predicted: “Unless the Lord of hosts had bequeathed offspring, we would have become like Sodom, and we would have been made similar to Gomorrah.”30¿Qué diremos en conclusión? Que los gentiles, los cuales no andaban tras la justicia, llegaron a la justicia, a la justicia que nace de la fe; What should we say next? That the Gentiles who did not follow justice have attained justice, even the justice that is of faith.31mas Israel, que andaba tras la Ley de la justicia, no llegó a la Ley. Yet truly, Israel, though following the law of justice, has not arrived at the law of justice.32¿Por qué? Porque no (la buscó) por la fe, sino como por obras, y así tropezaron en la piedra de tropiezo; Why is this? Because they did not seek it from faith, but as if it were from works. For they stumbled over a stumbling block,33como está escrito: “He aquí que pongo en Sión una piedra de escándalo, y peñasco de tropiezo; y el que creyere en Él no será confundido”. just as it was written: “Behold, I am placing a stumbling block in Zion, and a rock of scandal. But whoever believes in him shall not be confounded.”
