1La sabiduría ensalzará al humilde, y le dará asiento en medio de los magnates. The wisdom of one who is humble will exalt his head, and will cause him to sit down in the midst of great men.2No alabes al hombre por su bello aspecto, ni desprecies a nadie por su sola presencia exterior. You should not praise a man for his beauty, and you should not despise a man for his appearances.3Pequeña es la abeja entre los volátiles; mas su fruto es el primero en la dulzura. The bee is small among flying things, but its fruit holds the summit of sweetness.4No te gloríes jamás por el traje que llevas, y no te engrías cuando te veas ensalzado en alto puesto; porque solo las obras del Altísimo son admirables; gloriosas son ellas, pero ocultas e invisibles. You should not glory in clothing at any time, and you should not let yourself be extolled in the day of your honor. For the works of the Most High alone are wondrous; and glorious and hidden and unseen are his works.5Se sentaron en el trono muchos tiranos; y un hombre, en quien nadie pensaba, se ciñó la diadema. Many tyrants have sat upon a throne, and one whom no one would admire has worn a diadem.6Cayeron en grande ignominia muchos potentados; y magnates fueron entregados en poder de otros. Many powerful men have been powerfully cast down, and the illustrious have been handed over into the hands of others.7A nadie reprendas antes de informarte; y habiéndote informado, reprenderás con justicia. Before you inquire, you should not place blame on anyone; and when you have inquired, reprove justly.8Antes de haber escuchado, no respondas palabra; y mientras otro habla, no le interrumpas. Before you listen, you should not respond a word; and you should not interrupt in the middle of a discourse.9No porfíes sobre cosa que no te importa nada, ni te sientes para juzgar con los pecadores. You should not contend in a matter which does not concern you, and you should not sit in judgment together with sinners.10Hijo, no quieras abarcar muchos negocios; porque si te hicieres rico, no serás exento de culpa. Yendo tras de muchas cosas, no llegarás a alcanzar ninguna; y por mucho que corras, no te escaparás. Son, you should not be involved in many matters. And if you become rich, you will not be free from transgression. For if you pursue, you will not apprehend; and if you run ahead, you will not escape.11Hay hombre que, estando falto de piedad, trabaja y se afana y se duele, y tanto menos se enriquece. There is an impious man who labors and hurries and grieves, but all the more will he be without abundance.12Hay otro lánguido y necesitado de amparo, muy falto de fuerzas y abundante de miseria; There is a debilitated man in need of recovery, who is lacking in strength and abundant in poverty.13y a este Dios le mira con ojos benignos, le alza de su abatimiento y le hace levantar cabeza; de lo cual quedan muchos maravillados, y glorifican a Dios. Yet the eye of God has looked with favor upon him for his benefit, and he has lifted him up from his humiliation, and he has exalted his head. And many have wondered at him, and they have honored God.14De Dios vienen los bienes y los males, la vida y la muerte, la pobreza y la riqueza. Good things and misfortune, life and death, poverty and wealth, are from God.15De Dios son la sabiduría, la disciplina y la ciencia de la Ley; y del mismo son la caridad y las obras que hacen los buenos. Wisdom, and discipline, and knowledge of the law are with God. Love and the ways of good things are with him.16El error y las tinieblas son connaturales a los pecadores; y los que se glorían en el mal, envejecen en la malicia. Error and darkness have been created by sinners. And those who exult in evil, grow old in evil.17El don de Dios permanece en los justos; e irá creciendo continuamente con feliz suceso. The gift of God remains with the just man, and his advancement will have success unto eternity.18Hay quien se hace rico viviendo con escasez; y el único fruto que tiene por recompensa, There is one who is enriched by spending sparingly, and this is the extent of his reward.19es el decir: Yo he hallado mi reposo, y ahora comeré de mis bienes yo solo. About this, he says: “I have found rest for myself, and now I alone will eat from my goods.”20Mas él no sabe cuánto tiempo le resta; y no piensa que se le acerca la muerte, y que todo lo dejará a otros y morirá. But he does not know how much time will pass before death approaches, and then he must leave everything behind to others and die.21Persiste en tu pacto, y de este trata, y acaba tus días cumpliendo con aquello que te está mandado. Stand fast in your covenant, and become familiar with it, and grow old in the work of your commandments.22No fijes tu consideración en las obras de los pecadores; confía en Dios, y mantente en tu puesto. You should not spend time in the works of sinners. Instead, trust in God and remain in your own place.23Porque fácil es a Dios el enriquecer en un momento al pobre. For it is easy, in the eyes of God, to make a pauper suddenly rich.24La bendición de Dios se apresura a recompensar al justo, y en breve tiempo le hace crecer y fructificar. The blessing of God hurries to reward the just man, and in a fleeting hour his advancement bears fruit.25No digas: “¿Qué me queda ya que hacer? ¿Y qué bienes me vendrán en lo venidero?” You should not say: “What do I need?” or, “What good will there be for me in this?”26Tampoco digas: “Yo me basto a mí mismo; ¿y qué mal puedo temer para en adelante?” You should not say: “I have enough for myself,” or, “What could be worse than this?”27En los días buenos no te olvides de los días malos, y en el día malo acuérdate del día bueno. In a day of good things, you should not be forgetful of misfortunes. And in a day of misfortunes, you should not be forgetful of good things.28Porque fácil es a Dios el dar a cada uno, en el día de la muerte, el pago según sus obras. For it is easy, in the sight of God, on the day of one’s passing, to repay each one according to his ways.29Una hora de mal hace olvidar los mayores deleites; y en el fin del hombre se manifiestan sus obras. The affliction of an hour causes one to forget great delights, and in the end of a man is the uncovering of his works.30No alabes a nadie antes de su muerte; porque al hombre se le ha de conocer en sus hijos. You should not praise any man before death. For a man is known by his children.31No introduzcas en tu casa toda suerte de personas; pues son muchas las acechanzas de los maliciosos. You should not bring every man into your house. For many are the snares of the deceitful.32Porque así como un estómago fétido arroja regüeldos, y como la perdiz es conducida a la trampa, y la corza al lazo; así sucede con respecto al corazón del soberbio, el cual como de una atalaya está acechando la caída de su prójimo; For as a stomach with a bad smell vomits, and as a partridge is led into a cage, and like a deer led into a snare, so also is the heart of the arrogant. And it is like a bystander watching his neighbor fall.33y convirtiendo el bien en mal, está poniendo acechanzas; y pondrá tacha en los mismos escogidos. For it lies in ambush, and then turns good into evil, and it will place the blame on the elect.34Por una chispa se levanta un incendio, y por un hombre doloso se vierte mucha sangre; porque el pecador asecha la sangre. From one spark, a great fire grows; and from one deceitful man, much blood flows. But a very sinful man lies in ambush for blood.35Guárdate del hombre corrompido, pues está fraguando males; no sea que te cubra de perpetua infamia. Pay close attention to yourself before a harmful man, for he fabricates evils. Otherwise, he may lead over you a whispered reproach unceasingly.36Si admites en tu casa al extranjero, te trastornará como un torbellino, y te alejará de los tuyos. Receive a stranger to yourself, and he will overthrow you with a whirlwind, and he will alienate you from what is your very own.
