1Bienaventurado el hombre que no se deslizó en palabra que haya salido de su boca; ni es punzado por el remordimiento del pecado. Blessed is the man who has not slipped because of a word from his mouth, and who has not been stung by grief because of an offense.2Feliz el que no tiene en su ánimo la tristeza, y no ha decaído de su esperanza. Happy is he who does not have sadness in his mind, and who has not fallen away from his hope.3Al hombre codicioso y agarrado, de nada le sirven las riquezas; y ¿qué le aprovecha el oro al hombre tacaño? Substance is senseless for a greedy and stingy man. And what would a spiteful man do with gold?4El que amontona, privándose a sí mismo, para otros amontona; un extraño se regalará con sus bienes. Whoever acquires unjustly, according to his own mind, gathers for others. For another will spend his goods lavishly.5¿Para quién será bueno el que para sí mismo es mezquino, y no sabe gozar de sus bienes? Whoever is wicked to himself, to whom will he be good? For he will not take enjoyment in his own goods.6Quien es avaro contra sí mismo, es el hombre más ruin del mundo, y ya recibe el pago de su pasión perversa. Whoever has ill will toward himself, nothing is more worthless than he is. But such is the reward of his wickedness.7Si algún bien hace, sin pensar ni querer lo hace, y al cabo viene a manifestar su malicia. And if he does good, he does it ignorantly and unwillingly. And in the very end, he realizes his own malice.8Maligno es el ojo del envidioso, quien vuelve su cara al otro lado, y desprecia su misma alma. The eye of the spiteful man is wicked, and he averts his face and despises his own soul.9No se sacia el ojo del avaro con una porción injusta; no se saciará hasta tanto que haya consumido y secado su vida. The eye of the greedy man is insatiable in his portion of iniquity. He will not be satisfied until he has consumed his own soul, withering it away.10El ojo maligno está fijo en el mal; no se saciará de pan; se estará famélico y melancólico en la mesa. An evil eye is directed at evil things. And he will not be satisfied by bread; instead, he will be needy and grieving at his own table.11Hijo mío, disfruta aquello que tienes, y haz de ello ofrendas dignas a Dios. Son, if you have anything, do good to yourself, and offer worthy oblations to God.12Acuérdate de la muerte, la cual no tarda, y de la ley que se te ha intimado de ir al sepulcro; porque el morir es una ley de la que nadie está exento. Remember that death has not been delayed, and that the covenant of the grave has been revealed to you. For the covenant of this world will pass away in death.13Antes de morir haz bien a tu prójimo, y alarga tu mano hacia el pobre según tu posibilidad. Do good to your friend before you die. And according to your ability, extend your hand and give to the poor.14No te prives de un buen día; y del buen don no dejes perder ninguna parte. Do not cheat yourself out of a good day, and do not let the smallest good gift pass you by.15¿No ves que has de dejar a otros tus sudores y fatigas, y que a la suerte se lo repartirán entre sí? Should you not leave it to others to divide your sorrows and labors by lot?16Da, y toma, y santifica tu alma. Give, and receive, and justify your soul.17Practica la justicia antes que mueras; pues en el sepulcro no hay que buscar el sustento. Before your passing, accomplish justice. For in death, there is no food to be found.18Se ha de pudrir toda carne como el heno y como las hojas que brotan en la verde planta. All flesh grows old like the grass, and like the foliage that springs forth from a green tree.19Unas hojas nacen, y otras se caen; así de las generaciones de carne y sangre una fenece, y otra nace. Some spring up, and others fall away. Such is the generation of flesh and blood. One is finished, and another is born.20Toda obra corruptible ha de perecer finalmente, y su artífice tendrá el mismo paradero que ella. Every corruptible work will fail in the end. And its worker will go with it.21Todas las obras escogidas serán aprobadas, y el que las hace, será por ellas glorificado. But every excellent work will be justified. And whoever worked it will be honored by it.22Bienaventurado el hombre que es constante en la sabiduría, y medita en la justicia, y considera en su mente la providencia de Dios, Blessed is the man who will abide in wisdom, and who will meditate on her righteousness, and who, in his mind, will consider the circumspection of God.23que va estudiando en su corazón los caminos de ella, y entiende sus arcanos, yendo en pos de ella, como quien sigue su rastro, pisando siempre sus huellas; He considers her ways in his heart, and he finds understanding in her secrets. He goes after her like an investigator, and he is constant in her ways.24que se pone a mirar por sus ventanas, y está escuchando en su puerta; He gazes through her windows, and he listens at her door.25y reposa junto a la casa de ella, e hincando en sus paredes una estaca, asienta al lado de ella su pequeño pabellón, dentro del cual tendrán perpetua morada los bienes. He rests next to her house, and, fastening a peg in her walls, he sets up his cottage by her hands. And so, good things will find rest in his cottage as time passes.26Bajo la protección de la sabiduría colocará a sus hijos, y morará debajo de sus ramas, He will station his sons under her covering, and he will abide under her branches.27a la sombra de ella estará defendido del calor, y reposará en su gloria. He will be protected by her covering from the heat, and he will rest in her glory.
