Eclesiástico 20

1Mejor es dar una reprensión que estar enojado, y mejor no prohibir el hablar al que confiesa. How much better is it to reprove, than to become angry, so as not to hinder him who may confess in prayer.2Como el eunuco lascivo que deshonra a una doncellita, The lust of an eunuch will deflower a young maiden;3así es el que con la fuerza viola la justicia. similar is he who by violence gives an iniquitous judgment.4¡Cuán buena cosa es, mostrar arrepentimiento siendo corregido! porque así escaparás al pecado voluntario. How good it is, when you are corrected, to show contrition! For in this way, you will escape deliberate sin.5Hay quien callando es reconocido por sabio; y hay quien es odioso por su flujo de hablar. There is one who, by remaining silent, is found to be wise. And there is another who is hateful and who provokes by speaking out.6Tal hay que calla por no saber hablar; y tal hay que calla, porque sabe cuál es la ocasión oportuna. There is one who, not having the understanding to speak, remains silent. And there is another who remains silent, knowing the proper time.7El nombre sabio callará hasta que sea tiempo; mas el vano y el imprudente no aguardan la ocasión. A wise man will remain silent until the proper time. But an unrestrained and imprudent person will not heed the times.8Quien habla mucho, hará daño a su alma; y el que se arroga un poder injustamente será aborrecido. Whoever uses many words will wound his own soul. And whoever unjustly takes authority upon himself will be hated.9La prosperidad es un mal para el hombre desarreglado; y los tesoros que halla, se le convierten en detrimento. There is advancement in evil for an undisciplined man, and there is a plan which turns to his detriment.10Hay dádiva que es inútil; y dádiva hay que tiene doble recompensa. There is a gift which is not helpful, and there is a gift, the repayment for which is double.11Hay quien en la exaltación halla el abatimiento; y a otro la humillación sirve para ensalzarse. There is a loss for the sake of boasting, and there is one who will lift up his head from lowliness.12Tal hay que compra muchas cosas, a un vil precio, y después tiene que pagar siete veces más. There is one who buys much for a small price, and who pays it back sevenfold.13Se hace amable el sabio con su conversación; mas las gracias de los tontos serán pérdidas. Anyone wise in words makes himself loved. But the graces of the foolish will be poured away.14La dádiva del necio no te aprovechará; porque sus ojos tienen muchas miras. A gift from the unwise will not benefit you. For his gaze is divided, sevenfold.15Dará poco y lo echará muchas veces en cara; y el abrir de su boca será un volcán. He will give little, and reproach much. And the opening of his mouth is like a burning flame.16Hoy da prestado uno, y mañana lo demanda; hombre de este jaez es bien odioso. There is one who lends today and demands repayment tomorrow. A man such as this is hateful.17El necio no tendrá amigo; ni serán agradecidos sus dones; A foolish man will not have a friend, and there will be no thanks for his good deeds.18pues los que comen su pan, son de lengua fementida. ¡Oh, cuántos, y cuántas veces harán burla de él! For those who eat his bread have a false tongue. How often and how many are those who will ridicule him!19Porque da sin juicio lo que debía reservar, y aun aquello que no debía guardar. For what he possesses, he does not distribute with correct understanding. And he acts similarly with what he does not possess.20El desliz de la lengua embustera es como el de quien cae en un pavimento; tan precipitada será la caída de los malos. The slip of a false tongue is like someone who falls upon pavement. Such a fall for the wicked will arrive quickly.21El hombre insulso es como un cuento sin sustancia, repetido en boca de gente mal criada. A disagreeable man is like a pointless fable; it will be continually in the mouth of the undisciplined.22La parábola no tiene gracia en boca del fatuo, porque la dice fuera de tiempo. A parable from the mouth of a fool will be rejected. For he does not speak it at the proper time.23Hay quien deja de pecar por falta de medios, y padecer tormentos por estar en inacción. There is one who is prevented from sinning by poverty, and in his rest, he will be vexed.24Hay quien pierde su alma por respetos humanos, y la pierde por miramiento a un imprudente; y por un tal hombre se pierde a sí mismo. There is one who will lose his own soul because of pretense, and he will lose it by an example of imprudence. For by seeking the approval of another, he will destroy himself.25Hay quien por respetos humanos hace promesas al amigo, y la ganancia que de eso saca, es hacérsele gratuitamente enemigo. There is one who, for the sake of what others think, makes a promise to a friend, and so he gains him as an enemy for no reason.26Es una tacha infame la mentira en el hombre; está de continuo en la boca de los mal criados. A lie is a wicked disgrace to a man, and yet lies will be continually in the mouths of those without discipline.27Menos malo es el ladrón, que el hombre que miente a todas horas; bien que ambos heredarán la perdición. A thief is better than a man who constantly lies. But both of them will inherit perdition.28Deshonradas son las costumbres de los mentirosos; siempre llevan consigo su propia confusión. The habits of lying men are without honor. And their shame is with them without ceasing.29El sabio se acredita con su hablar; y el varón prudente será grato a los magnates. A wise man will benefit himself by his own words, and a prudent man will please the powerful.30Aquel que labra su tierra, formará más alto el montón de frutos. El que hace obras de justicia, será ensalzado, y el que es acepto a los magnates, debe huir la injusticia. Whoever works his land will raise high a stockpile of grain. And whoever works justice will himself be raised high. Yet truly, whoever pleases the powerful will escape unfair treatment.31Los regalos y las dádivas ciegan los ojos de los jueces, y les cierran la boca para no corregir. Presents and gifts blind the eyes of judges, and silence their mouths, turning them aside from their task of correction.32La sabiduría que se tiene oculta, y el tesoro escondido, ¿de qué sirven, ni aquella ni este? Wisdom hidden, and treasure unseen: of what use is either of these?33Mejor es el hombre que oculta su ignorancia, que el que tiene escondido su saber. He who hides his foolishness is better than a man who conceals his wisdom.
