¹Con piedras llenas de lodo es apedreado el perezoso, y todos hablarán de él con desprecio. The lazy man is pelted with a dirty stone, and all will speak about his rejection.²Le tiran boñigas de buey, y todos los que le tocan sacuden las manos. The lazy man is pelted with the dung of oxen, and all who touch him will brush off their hands.³Afrenta del padre es el hijo mal criado; y la hija será poco estimada. An undisciplined son is the shame of his father, but an undisciplined daughter will be to his degradation.⁴La hija prudente es una herencia para su esposo; mas la que acarrea desdoro es el oprobio de su padre. A prudent daughter brings an inheritance to her husband. But she who causes shame will be a disgrace to him who conceived her.⁵La descocada deshonra al padre y al marido; en nada es inferior a los malvados; será vilipendiada de uno y otro. She who is bold shames her father and her husband, and she will not be less offensive to the impious. For she will be held in dishonor by both.⁶Un discurso fuera de tiempo es música en un duelo; mas el azote y la instrucción, en toda ocasión son sabiduría. An untimely explanation is like music in a time of mourning. But the sharp correction and doctrine of wisdom are ever timely.⁷Quien pretende amaestrar a un tonto, es como el que quiere reunir con engrudo los pedazos de un tiesto. Whoever teaches the foolish is like someone who glues together a broken pot.⁸Quien cuenta una cosa al que no escucha, hace como el que quiere despertar de su letargo al que duerme. Whoever explains a word to one who is not listening is like someone who suddenly awakens a sleeping person from a deep sleep.⁹Habla con un dormido quien discurre de la sabiduría con un necio, y al fin del discurso dice: ¿Quién es este? Whoever explains wisdom to the senseless is like one speaking to a sleeping person. And at the end of the explanation, he says: “Who is this?”¹⁰Llora tú por el muerto, porque le faltó la luz; y llora por el fatuo, porque le falta el seso. Weep over the dead, for his light has failed. And weep over the foolish, for his understanding has failed.¹¹Llora, empero, poco por un muerto, pues ya goza de reposo. Weep only a little over the dead, for he is at rest.¹²Porque la pésima vida del impío fatuo, es peor que la muerte. But the wicked life of a wicked fool is worse than death.¹³Siete días dura el llanto por un muerto; pero el llanto por el fatuo e impío ha de durar mientras vivan. The mourning for the dead is seven days; but for the foolish and the impious, it is all the days of their life.¹⁴Con el necio no hables mucho, y no te acompañes con el insensato. You should not talk at length with the foolish, and you should not go with the senseless.¹⁵Guárdate de él para no tener inquietudes, y a fin de que no te manche su pecado. Keep yourself from him, so that you may not have problems, and so that you will not be polluted by his sin.¹⁶Desvíate de él, y tendrás sosiego, y no recibirás tedio por su necedad. Turn away from him, and you will find rest, and you will not be discouraged by his foolishness.¹⁷¿Qué otra cosa se nombrará que sea más pesada que el plomo, a no ser el tonto? What is heavier than lead? And what else can he be called but foolish?¹⁸Más fácil es cargar sobre sí arena, sal, y barras de hierro, que con un imprudente, un fatuo o un impío. Sand, and salt, and an iron weight are each easier to bear than an imprudent man, who is both foolish and impious.¹⁹La trabazón de vigas encajadas para cimiento del edificio, no se descompondrá; así tampoco un corazón robustecido con un consejo maduro. A bundle of wood strapped together in the foundation of a building will not be loosened. And similar is the heart that has been strengthened by thoughtful counsel.²⁰Las resoluciones del hombre sensato no serán alteradas por el miedo en ningún tiempo. The thoughts of one who is understanding will not be corrupted by fear in any situation.²¹Como los palos plantados en lugares elevados, y las paredes hechas a poca costa, no pueden resistir contra la fuerza del viento; Just as chaff in a high place, or a wall made of mortar without stones set within, will not continue against the face of the wind,²²así igualmente el corazón del fatuo, tímido en sus pensamientos, no resistirá al ímpetu del temor. so also a timid heart, and the thoughts of the senseless, will not withstand the forcefulness of fear.²³Así como el corazón del fatuo, que está pavoroso en sus pensamientos, no temerá en todo tiempo; así tampoco aquel que está firme en los mandamientos de Dios. Despite a cowardly heart, the thoughts of the foolish will not fear any situation; yet neither will one who continues always in the precepts of God.²⁴El que punza el ojo, hace salir lágrimas, y quien punza el corazón, hace salir los afectos. He who jabs an eye produces tears. And he who jabs the heart produces understanding.²⁵El que tira una piedra contra los pájaros, los hace huir, así también el que habla mal del amigo rompe la amistad. He who throws a stone at birds will drive them away. So also, he who accuses his friend dissolves the friendship.²⁶Aunque hubieres desenvainado la espada contra el amigo, no desesperes; pues todavía podrás reconciliarte con él. But if you have drawn a sword against a friend, you should not despair; for there may be a way back.²⁷Si has dicho al amigo palabras pesadas, no temas; porque hay lugar a la concordia; pero dicterios, desvergüenzas, orgullo, revelación de un secreto, golpe a traición; por todas estas cosas sí que huirá el amigo. If you have opened a harsh mouth against a friend, you should not fear; for there may be a reconciliation. However, if there are accusations, or abuse, or arrogance, or the revealing of secrets, or a wound from deceitfulness, in all these cases, a friend will flee away.²⁸Guarda fidelidad al amigo en medio de su pobreza, a fin de gozar también de su prosperidad. Hold to faithfulness with a friend in his poverty, so that you may also rejoice in his prosperity.²⁹En el tiempo de su tribulación mantente fiel a él, si quieres también ser llamado a la parte en su herencia. In the time of his tribulation, remain faithful to him, so that you may also be an heir with him in his inheritance.³⁰El vapor y el humo se levantan del horno antes que la llama del fuego; así también las maldiciones, las injurias, y las amenazas preceden al derramamiento de sangre. Just as the steam from an oven, or the smoke from a fire, rises up before a flame, so also do curses and insults and threats rise up before bloodshed.³¹No me avergonzaré de saludar al amigo, ni me retiraré de su trato; y si me vinieren males por causa de él, sabré sufrirlos. I shall not be ashamed to greet a friend, nor shall I hide myself from his face. And if misfortunes befall me because of him, I will endure.³²Mas todos los que lo oyeren se guardarán de él. Anyone who hears of this will be wary around him.³³¿Quién pondrá un candado a mi boca, y sobre mis labios un sello inviolable para que no me deslice por ellos, y no sea mi lengua la perdición mía? Who will provide a keeper for my mouth, and a reliable seal over my lips, so that I may not fall because of them, and so that my tongue does not destroy me?
