1¡Señor, Padre mío, y dueño de mi vida! No me abandones a la indiscreción de mis labios, ni permitas que yo me deslice por causa de ellos. Lord, Father and Ruler of my life: may you not abandon me to their counsel, nor permit me to fall by them.2¿Quién empleará el azote sobre mis pensamientos, y la corrección de la sabiduría sobre mi corazón, de modo que no me perdone sus errores y de ellos no broten pecados? They would impose scourges over my thoughts and over the discipline of wisdom in my heart. And they would not spare me from their ignorances, nor would they allow their own offenses to become apparent.3no sea que se acrecienten mis ignorancias y se multipliquen mis faltas, y aumenten mis pecados, y que caiga yo delante de mis contrarios, y se ría de mí el enemigo mío. And they intend that my ignorances would increase, and my offenses be multiplied, and my sins abound. And so I would fall in the sight of my adversaries, and be rejoiced over by my enemy.4¡Oh, Señor, Padre mío, y Dios de mi vida! no me entregues a sus pensamientos. Lord, Father and God of my life: may you not abandon me to their plans.5No permitas en mis ojos la altanería; y aleja de mí todo deseo. Do not leave me with the haughtiness of my eyes. And avert all desire from me.6Quita de mí la intemperancia de la gula y no se apoderen de mí los apetitos de la lujuria; ni quieras entregarme a un ánimo inverecundo y desenfrenado. Take the desire of the body from me, and do not allow sexual desire to take hold of me, and do not permit an irreverent and senseless mind within me.7Hijos míos, escuchad las reglas para gobernar la lengua; y quien las observare no se perderá por los labios, ni resbalará en obras perversas. O sons: listen to the doctrine of my mouth. For those who observe it will not perish by the lips, nor be scandalized into wicked works.8En su necio hablar queda preso el pecador y el soberbio y maldiciente se arruinarán por sus mismos labios. A sinner is held by his own emptiness. And the arrogant and those who speak evil will be scandalized by these things.9No acostumbres tu boca al juramento; porque son muchas por eso las caídas. Do not allow your mouth to become accustomed to swearing oaths. For in this, there are many pitfalls.10Tampoco tomes continuamente en boca el nombre de Dios; ni interpongas los nombres de las cosas santas; porque no quedarás libre de culpa si lo haces. Truly, do not allow the naming of God to be continually in your mouth, and do not treat as if common the names of the holy ones. For you will not escape punishment by them.11Pues así como un esclavo sometido a todas horas a examen, nunca está sin cardenales; así todo el que jura y repite aquel nombre, jamás estará limpio de culpa. Just as a servant, continually interrogated, will not be without a bruise, so everyone who swears oaths and takes God’s name will not be entirely free from sin.12El hombre que jura mucho, se llenará de pecados, y no se apartará de su casa la desgracia. A man who swears many oaths will be filled with iniquity, and scourges will not depart from his house.13Porque si no cumple el juramento tendrá sobre sí el delito; y si no hace caso, peca doblemente. And if he fails to fulfill it, his offense will be over him, and if he pretends he fulfilled it, he offends doubly.14Si ha jurado en vano, no será tenido por inocente; antes bien, lloverán castigos sobre su casa. And if he swears an oath insincerely, he will not be justified. For his house will be filled with retribution for him.15Hay todavía otro lenguaje que confina con la muerte. Nunca se oiga entre los descendientes de Jacob. There is yet another kind of talk which faces death; let it not be found in the inheritance of Jacob.16Así, todas estas cosas estarán lejos de los hombres piadosos, que no se envuelven en semejantes delitos. For all these things will be taken away from the merciful, and they shall not wallow in offenses.17No se acostumbre tu boca al hablar indiscreto; porque siempre va acompañado de la mancha del pecado. Do not allow your mouth to become accustomed to undisciplined speech. For in this, there is the sin of words.18Acuérdate de tu padre y de tu madre, aunque estés sentado entre los magnates; When you sit in the midst of great men, remember your father and mother.19para que no suceda que Dios se olvide de ti delante de ellos; y que infatuado por tu costumbre tengas que sufrir tales oprobios, que quisieras más no haber venido al mundo, y maldigas el día de tu nacimiento. Otherwise, God may forget you, when you are in their sight, and then you would be repeatedly ridiculed and would suffer disgrace, and you might wish that you had never been born, and you might curse the day of your nativity.20El hombre acostumbrado a decir improperios, no se corregirá en toda su vida. The man who is accustomed to disgraceful words will not accept instruction, all the days of his life.21Dos especies de personas pecan con frecuencia, y otra tercera provoca la ira y la perdición: Two kinds of persons abound in sins, and a third adds wrath and perdition.22el ánimo fogoso como una ardiente llama, que no se calma sin devorar alguna cosa; A desirous soul is like a burning fire, it will not be quenched, until it devours something.23y el hombre esclavo de los apetitos de su carne, el cual no tendrá sosiego hasta que encienda el fuego. And a man who is wicked in the desires of his flesh will not desist until he has kindled a fire.24Al hombre fornicario todo pan le es dulce; y no cesará de pecar hasta el fin. To a man of fornication, all bread is sweet; he will not tire of transgression, to the very end.25Todo hombre que deshonra su tálamo conyugal, como quien tiene en poco su alma, suele decir: “¿Quién hay que me vea? Every man who transgresses his own bed has contempt for his own soul. And so he says: “Who can see me?26Rodeado estoy de tinieblas, y las paredes me encubren, y nadie me atisba: ¿a quién tengo que temer? el Altísimo no se acordará de mis delitos.” Darkness surrounds me, and the walls enclose me, and no one catches sight of me. Whom should I fear? The Most High will not remember my offenses.”27Mas él no reflexiona que el ojo de Dios está viendo todas las cosas; porque semejante temor humano, temor no más que de los hombres, expele de él el temor de Dios. And he does not understand that God’s eye sees all things. For fear within a man such as this drives away from him both the fear of God and the eyes of those men who fear God.28No sabe que los ojos del Señor son mucho más luminosos que el sol; descubren todos los procederes de los hombres y lo profundo del abismo, y ven hasta los más recónditos senos del corazón humano. And he does not acknowledge that the eyes of the Lord are much brighter than the sun, keeping watch over all the ways of men, even to the depths of the abyss, and gazing into the hearts of men, even to the most hidden parts.29Porque todas las cosas, antes de ser creadas, fueron conocidas de Dios, el Señor; y aun después que fueron hechas las está mirando a todas. For all things, before they were created, were known to the Lord God. And even after their completion, he beholds all things.30Este tal será por lo mismo castigado en la plaza de la ciudad; él, cual potro, echará a huir; pero le pillarán donde menos pensaba. This man will be punished in the streets of the city, and he will be chased like a young horse. And in a place that he does not suspect, he will be captured.31Y será deshonrado delante de todos, por no haber conocido el temor del Señor. And because he did not understand the fear of the Lord, he will be in disgrace before all men,32Lo mismo será de cualquiera mujer que deja a su propio marido, y de un extraño le da un heredero; as will be every woman, too, who abandons her husband and establishes an inheritance by marriage to another man.33porque ella en primer lugar fue rebelde a la ley del Altísimo; lo segundo, ultrajó a su propio marido; lo tercero, se contaminó con el adulterio, y se procreó hijos del marido ajeno. For first, she was unbelieving of the law of the Most High. Second, she offended against her husband. Third, she fornicated by adultery, and so established her children by another man.34Esta será conducida a la asamblea pública, y se hará información sobre sus hijos; This woman will be led into the assembly, and she will be stared at by her children.35los cuales no echarán raíces, ni darán frutos sus ramos. Her children will not take root, and her branches will not produce fruit.36Dejará en maldición su memoria; y jamás se borrará su infamia. She will leave behind her memory as a curse, and her infamy will not be wiped away.37Por donde los venideros conocerán que no hay cosa mejor que temer a Dios, y nada más suave que observar los mandamientos del Señor. And those who are left behind will acknowledge that there is nothing better than the fear of God, and that there is nothing sweeter than to have respect for the commandments of the Lord.38Servir al Señor es una gloria grande; pues de Él se recibirá larga vida. It is a great glory to follow the Lord. For length of days will be received from him.
