Eclesiástico 26
1Dichoso el marido de una mujer virtuosa, porque será doblado el número de sus años. Blessed is the husband of a good wife. For the number of his years is doubled.2La mujer fuerte es el consuelo de su marido, y le hace vivir en paz los años de su vida. A good wife delights her husband, and she will fill up the years of his life with peace.3Es una suerte dichosa la mujer buena; suerte que tocará al que teme a Dios, y le será dada al hombre por sus buenas obras. A good wife is a good portion. She will be given the portion of those who fear God, like a man who has done good deeds.4Ora sea rico, ora pobre, tendrá contento el corazón, y alegre en todo tiempo su semblante. But, rich or poor, with a good heart, his countenance will be cheerful at all times.5De tres cosas tiene temor mi alma; y por la cuarta tiene espanto mi rostro: Of three things, my heart has been afraid, and at a fourth, my face has shown dread:6de la delación de una ciudad, del motín de un pueblo, an accusation made by a city, and the gathering of a mob,7y de la mentirosa calumnia; cosas todas más dolorosas que la muerte. and a deceitful false accusation. All these are more grievous than death.8La mujer celosa es dolor y llanto del corazón; A jealous wife is a grief and a mourning to the heart.9su lengua es un azote que alcanza a todos. In a jealous wife, there is a scourge of the tongue, which communicates with everyone.10Como el yugo de bueyes que está flojo, así es la mujer mala. Quien la toma, cuente que toma un escorpión. Like a yoke of oxen being provoked, so also is a wicked wife. He who has hold of her is like one who has taken hold of a scorpion.11La mujer que se embriaga es una plaga grande; y su ignominia y torpeza no podrán encubrirse. An inebriated wife is a great wrath. And her disgrace and indecency will not be covered.12La deshonestidad de la mujer se conoce en la altivez de sus ojos y en sus párpados. The fornication of a wife will become known by the haughtiness of her eyes and by her eyelids.13Vela atentamente sobre la hija que no refrena sus ojos; no sea que hallando oportunidad, desfogue sus pasiones. So that her daughter will not also turn away, keep a strict watch; otherwise, having found an opportunity, she may enjoy herself.14Séate sospechosa toda inmodestia de sus ojos, y no te maravilles si no hace caso de ti. Be wary of the irreverence of her eyes, and you should not wonder if she might disregard you.15Como un caminante sediento, aplicará la boca a la fuente, beberá de toda agua cercana, se sentará junto a cualquier estaca (de tienda) y abrirá la aljaba a cualquiera saeta hasta que más no pueda. Like a thirsty traveler, she will open her mouth to the fountain, and she will drink from every water nearby, and she will sit down beside every fencepost, and she will open her quiver to every arrow, until she becomes weary.16La gracia de la mujer hacendosa alegra al marido, y le llena de jugo los huesos. The grace of an attentive wife will delight her husband, and will fatten his bones.17La buena crianza de ella es un don de Dios. Her discipline is a gift from God.18Es cosa que no tiene precio: una mujer discreta y amante del silencio, y con el ánimo morigerado. Such is an understanding and quiet wife. For there is no substitution for a well-instructed soul.19Gracia es sobre gracia la mujer santa y vergonzosa. A holy and contrite wife is grace upon grace.20No hay cosa de tanto valor que pueda equivaler a un alma casta. And no amount of money is equal to the value of a soul with self-restraint.21Lo que es para el mundo el sol al nacer en las altísimas moradas de Dios, eso es la gentileza de la mujer virtuosa para el adorno de una casa. Like the sun rising over the world in the high places of God, so the beauty of a good wife is the adornment of her house.22Antorcha que resplandece sobre el candelabro sagrado, es la hermosura del rostro en una edad robusta. Like a lamp shining atop a holy lampstand, so is the beauty of a face in the mature stage of life.23Columnas de oro sobre basas de plata son los pies que descansan sobre las plantas de una mujer fuerte. Like golden pillars upon bases of silver, so are the firm feet of a mature wife upon the soles of her feet.24Cimientos eternos, sobre piedra sólida son los mandamientos de Dios en el corazón de la mujer santa. Like everlasting foundations upon a solid rock, so are the commandments of God in the heart of a holy wife.25Dos cosas contristan mi corazón, y la tercera me provoca a cólera: By two things, my heart is greatly saddened, and at a third, anger overwhelms me:26un varón aguerrido que desfallece de hambre; el varón sabio de quien no se hace caso; a man of war failing because of dire need, and an understanding man treated with contempt,27y el hombre que de la justicia se vuelve al pecado, al cual destina Dios a la perdición. and anyone who crosses over from justice to sin. God has prepared such a one for the spear.28Dos profesiones me han parecido difíciles y peligrosas: el negociante con dificultad se librará de culpa, y el tabernero no estará exento de los pecados de la lengua. Two kinds of things have seemed difficult and dangerous to me: a merchant will not be easily freed from his negligence, and a shopkeeper will not be justified by the sins of his lips.
