¹Quien es misericordioso, da prestado a su prójimo; y el que tiene abierta la mano para dar, observa los mandamientos. He shows mercy who lends to his neighbor, for he keeps the commandments by strengthening him.²Presta a tu prójimo en tiempo de su necesidad; y restituye a su tiempo al prójimo lo prestado. Lend to your neighbor in his time of need, and receive it again from your neighbor in his time.³Cumple tu palabra y pórtate fielmente con él, y en todo tiempo hallarás lo que necesites Keep your word, and act faithfully with him, and then you will find whatever you need in every time.⁴El dinero prestado lo reputan muchos como un hallazgo; y causan molestia a los que los favorecieron. Many have treated a loan like found money, and they offered trouble to those who helped them.⁵Hasta tanto que hayan recibido, besan las manos del que puede dar, y con voz humilde hacen promesas; Until they receive, they kiss the hands of the giver, and they humble their voice in promises.⁶mas cuando es tiempo de pagar piden espera, y dicen cosas pesadas, y murmuran; y echan la culpa al tiempo. But at the time of repayment, they will ask for more time, and they will speak annoying and complaining words, and they will make excuses for the time.⁷Y aunque se hallen en estado de pagar, pondrán dificultades; apenas volverán la mitad de la deuda; y lo que pagan ha de contarse como un hallazgo. Then, if he is able to repay, he will turn away. He will pay barely one half, and he will consider it as if he had found it.⁸Y no siendo así, le defraudarán de su dinero; y sin más ni más se ganará el acreedor un enemigo, But if not, then he will defraud him of his money, and he will have him as an enemy without cause.⁹el cual le pagará con injurias y maldiciones, y por un honor y un beneficio recibido le volverá ultrajes. And he will repay him with accusations and curses, and he will repay him with contempt, instead of with honor and kindness.¹⁰Muchos dejan de prestar, no por dureza de corazón, sino por temor de ser burlados injustamente. Many have refused to lend, not because of wickedness, but because they were afraid to be defrauded without cause.¹¹Sé tú de alma más generosa con el humilde, y no le hagas esperar por la limosna. Yet truly, be more steadfast toward the humble, and you should not delay in acts of mercy toward them.¹²En cumplimiento del mandamiento socorre al pobre, y en su necesidad no lo despidas con las manos vacías. Assist the poor because of the commandment. And you should not send him away empty because of his dire need.¹³Pierde el dinero por amor de tu hermano y de tu amigo, y no lo escondas sin provecho debajo de una losa. Lose your money to your brother and your friend. For you should not hide it under a stone to be lost.¹⁴Emplea tu tesoro según los preceptos del Altísimo; y te rendirá más que el oro. Let your treasure be in the precepts of the Most High, and it will benefit you more than gold.¹⁵Encierra la limosna en el seno del pobre, y ella rogará por ti para librarte de todo mal. Store your alms in the hearts of the poor, and it will obtain help for you against all evil.¹⁶Peleará contra tu enemigo mejor que el escudo y la lanza de un campeón. A good man offers credit for the sake of his neighbor. But one who abandons him to himself will perish in shame.¹⁹El hombre de bien da fianza por su prójimo; mas el que ha perdido el rubor, lo abandona a su suerte. You should not forget the kindness of your benefactor. For he has offered his life on your behalf.²⁰No te olvides del beneficio que te ha hecho tu fiador, pues ha expuesto por ti su vida. The sinner and the unclean flee from such promises.²¹El pecador y el inmundo huyen del que ha salido fiador por ellos. A sinner attributes to himself the goods of his loan. And an ungrateful mind will abandon the one who has freed him.²²El pecador se apropia los bienes del que ha dado la fianza por él, y con corazón ingrato abandona a su libertador. A man offers credit to his neighbor. But when he will have lost respect, he will abandon him.²³Sale uno por fiador de su prójimo; y este, perdida toda vergüenza, le abandona. A wicked promise has destroyed many who had good intentions, and has tossed them like a wave on the ocean.²⁴Fianzas indiscretas han perdido a muchos acomodados, y los han conmovido como olas del mar. It has caused powerful men to travel around, and they have wandered amid foreign nations.²⁵Han trastornado a hombres acaudalados, los han hecho trasmigrar y andar errantes entre gentes extrañas. A sinner transgressing the commandment of the Lord will fall into a wicked promise. And he who undertakes many things will fall into judgment.²⁶El pecador que traspasa el mandamiento del Señor, se enredará en fianzas ruinosas; y el que se mete a muchas empresas, caerá en juicio. Help your neighbor to recover according to your ability, but attend to yourself, lest you also fall.²⁷Sostén al prójimo según tu posibilidad; pero mira también por ti mismo, a fin de que no te precipites. The primary need in a man’s life is water and bread, and clothing, and a house to protect modesty.²⁸Lo esencial de la vida del hombre es agua y pan, y vestido y casa, para tener cubierto aquello que no debe dejarse ver. A pauper’s food under a roof of boards is better than a splendid feast on a sojourn away from home.²⁹Mejor es la comida del pobre, al abrigo de una choza, que banquetes espléndidos en tierra extraña donde no se tiene domicilio. Let yourself be pleased with little instead of much, and you will not hear the reproach of being away from home.³⁰Conténtate con lo que tuvieres, sea poco o mucho, y no tendrás que oír el reproche de ser forastero. It is a wicked life to go from house to house as a guest. For wherever he is a guest, he will not act confidently, nor open his mouth.³¹Es una vida infeliz la del que va hospedándose de casa en casa; pues donde quiera que se hospede, no puede obrar con libertad, ni abrir su boca. He will entertain, and feed, and give drink to the ungrateful, and beyond this, he will listen to bitter words:³²Alguien da hospedaje y de comer y beber a ingratos; y tras esto oirá cosas que le amarguen. “Go, my guest, and set the table, and let others eat from what you have in your hand.”³³“Vamos, huésped, pon la mesa, y da de comer a los otros lo que tienes a mano.” “Depart from the honored face of my friends. For it has become necessary for my house to host my brother instead.”³⁴“Vete afuera, haz lugar a otro más honorable que tú; necesito mi casa; he de alojar a un hermano mío.” These things are grievous to a man having understanding: to take advantage of a household, and to reproach a lender.³⁵Para un hombre sensato estas cosas son pesadas: la increpación del patrón de la casa, y los improperios del prestamista. —
