1El desvelo por las riquezas consume las carnes, y sus cuidados quitan el sueño. Watching for wealth consumes the flesh, and thinking about it takes away sleep.2Los pensamientos de lo que podrá suceder perturban el sosiego, y la grave enfermedad hace al alma templada. Anticipation in thought distracts the mind, and a grievous infirmity makes the soul sober.3Trabaja el rico para allegar riquezas, y en su reposo se rellena de sus bienes. The rich man has labored in gathering wealth, and in his rest, he will be filled with his goods.4Trabaja el pobre para poder comer; y al fin sigue pobre. The poor man has labored in his lowly way, and in the end, he may still be in need.5No será justo el que es amante del oro, y quien sigue la corrupción, en ella se perderá. Whoever loves gold will not be justified. And whoever pursues consumption will be consumed by it.6Muchos han caído a causa del oro, el resplandor del cual fue su perdición. Many have been caused to fall because of gold, and it became their ruin by its beauty.7Leño de tropiezo es el oro, para los que lo adoran. ¡Ay de aquellos que se van tras el oro! Por su causa perecerá todo imprudente. Gold is a stumbling block to those who sacrifice for it. Woe to those who pursue it eagerly, for all the imprudent will perish by it.8Bienaventurado el rico que es hallado sin culpa, y que no anda tras el oro, ni pone su esperanza en el dinero ni en los tesoros. Blessed is the rich man who is found to be without blemish. And blessed is he who has not gone after gold, nor placed his hope in money or treasures.9¿Quién es este, y le elogiaremos? porque ha hecho cosas admirables en su vida. Who is he? For we should praise him. For he has done wonderful things in his life.10Él fue probado por medio del oro, y hallado perfecto; por lo que reportará gloria eterna. Él podía pecar y no pecó, hacer mal y no lo hizo. He has been tested by it, and has become perfect; he will have eternal glory. He was able to transgress, but he has not transgressed. He was able to do evil, but he has not done evil.11Por eso sus bienes están asegurados en el Señor; y celebrará sus limosnas toda la congregación de los santos. Therefore, his good things are established in the Lord, and the entire Church of the saints will proclaim his almsgiving.12¿Te sentaste en una espléndida mesa? No seas tú el primero en abrir tu boca. Are you seated at a great table? You should not open your mouth over it first.13Tampoco digas: “¡Oh, cuántas viandas hay en ella!” You should not speak in this way: “There are many things that are upon it.”14Mira que es mala cosa el ojo maligno. Remember that a wicked eye is evil.15¿Hay en el mundo cosa peor que semejante ojo? Por eso derramará lágrimas por toda su cara, cuando mirare. What has been made more wicked than the eye? Therefore, when it sees, it will shed tears over the entire face.16No alargues el primero tu mano, no sea que tachado por el envidioso quedes avergonzado. You should not extend your hand first, for then, having been corrupted by envy, you would be ashamed.17En el tomar las viandas no vayas atropellado. You should not press forward at a feast.18Juzga el deseo de tu vecino por el tuyo propio. Understand which things are your neighbor’s and not your own.19Toma como persona moderada de los platos que se te presentan, para que no te hagas odioso o despreciable con el mucho comer. Make use of the things that are set before you, just as a frugal man would. Otherwise, if you eat much, you will be hated.20Muestra tu buena crianza, acabando el primero; y no seas insaciable, a fin de no disgustar a nadie. Cease eating first, for the sake of discipline. And do not eat to excess, lest you offend.21Y si estás sentado en medio de muchos, no alargues primero que ellos tu mano, ni seas el primero en pedir de beber. And if you sit in the midst of many, you should not extend your hand before they do, and you should not be the first to ask for a drink.22¡Cuán poco vino es suficiente para un hombre bien educado! y así cuando duermas no te causará desasosiego, ni sentirás incomodidad. How sufficient is a little wine for a well-taught man! For in sleep, you will not labor because of it, and you will not feel pain.23Insomnio, cólera y retortijones padecerá el hombre destemplado. Worry, and disease, and torment are with an intemperate man.24Sueño saludable gozará el hombre templado; dormirá hasta la mañana y despertará con el corazón alegre. A healthy sleep is with a temperate man. He will sleep until morning, and his soul will be delighted with him.25Y si te has visto forzado a comer mucho, retírate de la concurrencia y vomita; y te hallarás aliviado, y no acarrearás una enfermedad a tu cuerpo. And if you have been coaxed into eating too much, rise up, go outside, and vomit. And it will refresh you, and you will not bring sickness upon your body.26Escúchame, hijo, y no me desprecies, que a la postre reconocerás lo que digo. Listen to me, son, for you should not spurn me. And in the very end, you will discover my words.27En todas tus operaciones sé diligente, y no tendrás ningún achaque. In all your works, be prompt, and then no infirmity will befall you.28Al liberal en distribuir el pan le bendecirán los labios de muchos, y darán un testimonio fiel de su bondad. The lips of many will bless the splendid in bread. For the testimony of his truthfulness is faithful.29Contra aquel que es mezquino en dar pan, murmurará la ciudad, y será verdadero el testimonio que darán de su mezquindad. The city will murmur against the wicked in bread. For the testimony against his wickedness is true.30A los buenos bebedores no los provoques a beber; porque la perdición de muchos viene del vino. Do not choose to provoke those who love wine. For wine has destroyed many.31Como el fuego prueba la dureza del hierro, así el vino bebido hasta embriagarse descubre los corazones de los soberbios. Fire tests the hardness of iron; similarly, drinking wine to inebriation will rebuke the hearts of the arrogant.32Vida tranquila para los hombres es el vino usado con sobriedad; serás sobrio si lo bebes con moderación. Drinking wine in sobriety gives a contented life to men. If you drink it in moderation, you will be sober.33¿Qué vida es la de aquel a quien falta el vino? What is life to him who is diminished by wine?34¿Qué cosa es la que nos priva de la vida? La muerte. What can cheat him of his life? Death.35El vino desde el principio fue creado para alegría, no para embriaguez. From the beginning, wine was created for cheerfulness, but not for inebriation.36Recrea el alma y el corazón el vino bebido moderadamente. Wine taken in moderation lifts up the mind and the heart.37El beberle con templanza es salud para el alma y para el cuerpo. Sober drinking is healthful to mind and body.38El demasiado vino causa contiendas, iras y muchos estragos. Wine taken in excess stirs up conflict and anger, and brings many to ruin.39Amargura del alma es el vino bebido con exceso. Wine taken in excess is bitter to the soul.40La embriaguez estimula al necio a ofender, enerva las fuerzas, y es ocasión de heridas. The effects of inebriation are a stumbling block to the imprudent, diminishing strength and causing wounds.41En un convite en que se bebe, no reprendas al prójimo, ni le desprecies en el calor de su alegría. You should not argue with your neighbor during a banquet of wine. And you should not spurn him in his cheerfulness.42No le digas dicterios, ni le apremies a que te devuelva lo que te debe. You should not speak words of reproach to him. And you should not press him with repeated requests.
