1¿Te han hecho simposiarca? Por eso no te engrías; compórtate entre ellos como uno de tantos. Have they appointed you as a leader? Do not be willing to be extolled. Be among them as one of them.2Cuida bien de todos, y después que hayas satisfecho plenamente tu oficio, siéntate a la mesa; Have concern for them, and in this way sit down with them, and when you have explained all your concerns, sit back.3a fin de que ellos te causen alegría, y recibas la corona, como ornamento de distinción, y obtengas la porción de honor que ellos han separado para ti. Then you may rejoice because of them, and you may receive a crown as an adornment of grace, and so obtain the dignity of the assembly.4Tú, el más anciano, a quien toca hablar el primero, Speak, you who are greater by birth. For it is fitting for you5habla sabia y prudentemente; mas no estorbes la música. to speak the first word with careful knowledge. But you should not hinder the music.6Donde no hay quien escuche, no eches palabras al viento; ni quieras fuera de sazón ostentar tu saber. Where no one is listening, you should not pour out words. And do not choose to be extolled improperly for your wisdom.7Un concierto de música en un convite de vino, es semejante a un rubí engastado en oro. A gemstone of garnet is set amid an ornament of gold, and a concert of music is set amid a banquet of wine.8Como esmeralda engastada en un anillo de oro, así es la melodía de los cantares con el beber alegre y moderado. Just as a signet of emerald is set amid a work of gold, so is a melody of music set amid delightful and moderate wine.9Escucha en silencio, y con tu modestia te ganarás la estimación. Listen silently, and for your reverence, good graces will be added to you.10Tú, oh joven, habla si es necesario, a duras penas, en lo que a ti te toque. Young man, speak in your own case only reluctantly.11Preguntado una y otra vez, reduce a pocas palabras tu respuesta. If you have been asked twice, let your response be concise.12En muchas cosas hazte el ignorante, y escucha, ya callando, ya también preguntando. In many matters, be as if you lack knowledge, and listen silently as well as intently.13En medio de los magnates no seas presumido, y donde hay ancianos no hables mucho. In the midst of great men, you should not be presumptuous. And where the elders are present, you should not speak much.14El granizo es precedido del relámpago; así el rubor es precedido de la gracia, y por tu modestia serás bien visto de todos. Lightning goes before a hailstorm, and grace goes before modesty. And so, for your reverence, good graces will be added to you.15Llegando la hora de levantarte no te detengas; vete el primero a tu casa; allí diviértete, allí juega, And at the hour for rising, you should not be lax. Later, be the first to run ahead to your house, and there withdraw, and there take your pastime.16y haz lo que te pluguiere, con tal que sea sin pecar, ni decir palabras insolentes. And act according to your intentions, but not in sin and not in arrogant speech.17Y después de todo eso bendice al Señor que te creó, y que te colma de todos sus bienes. And for all these things, bless the Lord, who made you, and who fills you to overflowing with all his good things.18El que teme al Señor abraza su instrucción; y los que vigilaren en busca de Él, lograrán bendición. Whoever fears the Lord will accept his doctrine. And whoever watches for him diligently will find a blessing.19Quien busca la Ley se enriquece con ella; mas el que obra con hipocresía tropezará en ella. Whoever seeks the law will be filled from the law. But whoever acts with treachery will be scandalized by treachery.20Los que temen al Señor sabrán discernir lo que es justo, y harán brillar sus buenas obras como antorcha. Those who fear the Lord will find just judgment, and they will kindle justice like a light.21Huye de la reprensión el hombre pecador, y halla ejemplos en que apoyar sus antojos. A sinful man will shun correction, and he will find a rationalization in accord with his own will.22El varón prudente reflexiona bien lo que ha de hacer; pero el que no lo es, y el soberbio, nunca temen nada, A man of counsel will not reject understanding. A strange and arrogant man will not be disturbed by fear.23aun después de haber obrado por sí, sin consejo; más sus mismas empresas los condenarán. Even so, after he has acted out of fear and without counsel, he will be rebuked by his own criticism.24Tú, hijo, no hagas cosa alguna sin consejo, y no tendrás que arrepentirte después de hecha. Son, you should do nothing without counsel, and then you will not regret what you have done.25No vayas por camino malo, y no tropezarás en las piedras; ni te arriesgues a ir por senda difícil, para que no expongas a caídas tu alma. You should not go into the way of ruin, and you then will not stumble on stones. You should not commit yourself to a laborious way; otherwise, you may set up a scandal against your own soul.26Cuídate aun de tus propios hijos, y guárdate de tus criados. And be cautious concerning your own sons. And be attentive to those of your own household.27En todas tus acciones sigue el dictamen fiel de tu conciencia; pues eso es observar los mandamientos. In all of your works, trust your soul to faith. For this is the keeping of the commandments.28Quien cree en Dios atiende a sus preceptos, y el que confía en Él, no padecerá menoscabo. Whoever believes God attends to the commandments. And whoever trusts in him will not be diminished.
