¹Al que teme al Señor, nada malo le sucederá; antes bien en la tentación Dios le guardará, y le librará de males. No evils will befall one who fears the Lord. Instead, God will preserve him during temptation and will free him from evils.²El varón sabio no aborrece los preceptos y las leyes; ni se estrellará como un navío en la tormenta. A wise man does not hate the commandments and the justices, and so he will not be thrown about violently, like a ship in a storm.³El hombre prudente es fiel a la Ley de Dios, y la Ley será fiel para con él. A man of understanding puts his faith in the law of God, and so the law is faithful to him.⁴El que ha de aclarar una pregunta, debe premeditar la respuesta; y así, después de haber hecho oración, será oído; de ese modo conservará la buena doctrina, y entonces podrá responder. Whoever would resolve a dispute will prepare a word, and so, having prayed, he will be heard. And he will observe discipline, and then he will respond.⁵El corazón del fatuo es como la rueda del carro; y como un eje que da vueltas, así son sus pensamientos. The heart of a fool is like the wheel of a cart. And his thoughts are like a turning axel.⁶El amigo escarnecedor es como el caballo padre, que relincha debajo de cualquier jinete. A friend who is a whisperer is like an untamed horse: he neighs under anyone who sits upon him.⁷¿De dónde viene que un día se prefiere a otro, y la luz de un día a la luz de otro, y un año a otro año, proviniendo todos de un mismo sol? Why does day follow after day, and light follow after light, and year follow after year, in accord with the sun?⁸La sabiduría del Señor los diferenció después de creado el sol, el cual obedece las órdenes recibidas. By the knowledge of the Lord, they were arranged, after the sun was made, in keeping with his command.⁹Dios arregló las estaciones, y los días festivos de ellas, en que se celebran las solemnidades a la hora establecida. And so, the seasons changed, with their feast days. And according to them, they celebrated the feast days, in their hour.¹⁰De estos mismos días, a unos los hizo grandes y sagrados, y a otros los dejó en el número de días comunes. Así también a todos los hombres los hizo del polvo, y de la tierra, de que Adán fue formado; Some of them, God exalted and magnified. And some of them, he set amid the ordinary days. And all men are from the ground, and from the earth, from which Adam was created.¹¹a los cuales distinguió el Señor con su gran sabiduría, y diferenció los caminos de ellos. With a multitude of disciplines, the Lord has distinguished them and diversified their ways.¹²De ellos a unos bendijo, los ensalzó y los consagró, y los tomó para sí; a otros los maldijo y abatió, y los trastornó después de su separación. Some of them, he has blessed and exalted. And some of them he has sanctified and placed close to himself. And some of them, he has cursed and brought low, and he has turned them from their station.¹³Como el barro está en manos del alfarero para hacer y disponer de él, Just as the clay is in the potter’s hand, so as to form and to shape it,¹⁴y pende de su arbitrio el emplearle en lo que quiera; así el hombre está en las manos de su Hacedor, el cual le dará el destino según su juicio. so are all his ways in accord with his dispensation, and so is man in the hand of the One who made him. And he will repay him according to his judgment.¹⁵Contra el mal está el bien, y contra la muerte la vida; así también contra el hombre justo el pecador; y de este modo has de contemplar todas las obras del Altísimo; las veréis pareadas, y la una opuesta a la otra. Good is against evil, and life is against death; so also is a sinner against a just man. And so should you consider all the works of the Most High: two and two, and one against another.¹⁶Yo me he levantado el último, y soy como el que recoge rebuscos tras los vendimiadores. And I awakened at the very end, and I was like one who gathers grapes after the grape-gatherers.¹⁷Pero puse mi esperanza en la bendición de Dios, y llené mi lagar, como el que vendimia. I, too, have hoped in the blessing of God. And I have filled the winepress like one who gathers grapes.¹⁸Observad que no he trabajado para mí solo, sino para todos los que buscan instruirse. Consider how I have not labored for myself alone, but for all who are seeking discipline.¹⁹Escuchadme, oh magnates, y pueblos todos; y vosotros que presidís la asamblea, prestad atención. Listen to me, you great ones, with all the peoples. And incline your ears, you rulers of the Church.²⁰Ni al hijo, ni a la mujer, ni al hermano, ni al amigo, jamás en tu vida les des potestad sobre ti; ni cedas a otro lo que posees, para que no suceda que arrepentido hayas de pedirle rogando que te lo devuelva. You should not give authority over yourself to a son or wife, to a brother or friend, in your life. And you should not give your estate to another, lest perhaps you may regret it, and then you would be begging for the same.²¹Mientras estés en este mundo y respires, ningún hombre te haga mudar de este propósito. While you are still living and breathing, let no one among all flesh change you.²²Porque mejor es que tus hijos hayan de recurrir a ti, que no el que tú hayas de esperar el auxilio de las manos de tus hijos. For it is better if your children petition you, than if you look toward the hands of your children.²³En todas tus cosas mantén la superioridad, In all your works, be pre-eminent.²⁴a fin de no manchar tu reputación. Reparte tu herencia cuando se terminen los días de tu vida, al tiempo de tu muerte. You should not allow a blemish upon your glory. On the day of the consummation of the days of your life, at the time of your passing, distribute your inheritance.²⁵Pienso y palos y carga para el asno; pan y castigo y trabajo para el esclavo. Fodder and a rod and a burden are for a donkey; bread and discipline and work are for a servant.²⁶Trabaja por el castigo, y apetece el reposo; si le dejas sueltas las manos, busca la libertad. He works under discipline, and he seeks rest. Allow his hands to be idle, and he seeks liberty.²⁷El yugo y la coyunda doblan la dura cerviz; así las continuas faenas amansan al siervo. The yoke and the strap bend a stiff neck, and continual labors bend a servant.²⁸Al siervo de mala inclinación azotes y cepo. Envíale al trabajo para que no esté mano sobre mano. Torture and chains are for a malevolent servant; send him to work, so that he may not be idle.²⁹Pues la ociosidad es maestra de muchos vicios. For idleness has taught much evil.³⁰Fuérzale a trabajar, que esto es lo que le conviene; y si no hiciere lo que le mandas, aprémiale con meterle en el cepo; guárdate, empero, de excederte contra carne alguna, y no hagas cosas de gravedad sin consejo. Appoint him to a task. For this is fitting for him. And if he will not be obedient, bend him with chains. But you should do no more than any flesh can bear. Truly, you should do nothing grievous without judgment.³¹Si tienes un siervo fiel, cuida de él como de ti mismo; trátale como a hermano; pues le compraste a costa de tu sangre. If you have a faithful servant, let him be to you like your own soul. Treat him like a brother. For you have obtained him by the blood of your soul.³²Si le maltratas injustamente, se te huirá. If you harm him unjustly, he will turn away and flee.³³Y si él se aparta de ti y se marcha, no sabrás a quién preguntar, ni por qué camino le has de buscar. And then, when he lifts himself up and departs, you will not know whom to ask, or in what way to seek him.
