1Todo amigo dirá: Yo también he trabado amistad contigo. Pero hay amigos que lo son solo de nombre. ¿No es un disgusto a par de la muerte, Every friend will say: “I also am a close friend.” But there is a friend who is a friend in name only. Is this not a grief even unto death?2que el compañero y el amigo se cambien en enemigos? But a companion and friend may turn into an enemy.3¡Oh, perversísima invención! ¿De dónde has salido tú a cubrir la tierra de tal malicia y perfidia? O wicked presumption! From what were you created that you would cover the dry land with your malice and deceitfulness?4Un amigo se goza con el amigo en la mesa, y en el tiempo de la tribulación es su adversario. A companion may rejoice with his friend in good times, but in a time of tribulation, he will be an adversary.5Un amigo se conduele con el amigo por amor de su propio vientre, y embrazará el escudo contra el enemigo. There is a companion who commiserates with a friend for the sake of the stomach, but he will shield himself from the enemy.6No te olvides en tu corazón de tu amigo, y no pierdas la memoria de él en medio de tu opulencia. Do not choose to consult with someone who waits in ambush for you. And hide your counsel from those who rival you.8Todo el que es consultado da su consejo; mas hay consejero que lo da mirando su propio interés. Every counselor offers advice, but some are counselors only for themselves.9Mira bien con quién te aconsejas; infórmate primero de qué necesita; pues también él pensará dentro de sí; Guard your soul from a counselor. And know beforehand what his interests are. For he will form thoughts from his own soul.10no sea que él fije en el suelo una estaca, y te diga: Otherwise, he may set a signpost in the ground, and he may say to you:11“Bueno es tu camino”, y se esté enfrente para ver lo que te acontece. “Your own way is good.” But then he will stand at a distance to see what befalls you.12Vete a tratar de santidad con un hombre sin religión, y de justicia con un injusto, y con una mujer de otra que le da celos; de guerra con el cobarde, de cosas de tráfico con el negociante, de la venta con el comprador, con el hombre envidioso del agradecimiento, Do not discuss holiness with an irreligious man, nor justice with one who is unjust. You should not speak with a woman about her who is a rival, nor with a coward about war, nor with a merchant about exaggeration, nor with a buyer about selling, nor with a spiteful man about giving thanks,13con el impío de la piedad, con el deshonesto de la honestidad, de cualquier labor con el peón, nor with the impious about piety, nor with the dishonest about honesty, nor with the field worker about other kinds of work,14con el jornalero, asalariado por un año, de la obra que en él se puede hacer, con el siervo perezoso del tesón en el trabajo. You should pay no heed to these persons in any matter of counsel.15Trata de continuo con el varón piadoso, con cualquiera que tú conozcas como constante en el temor de Dios, But be continually with a holy man, with anyone whom you know to observe the fear of God,16y cuya alma es conforme a la tuya; el cual si tú vacilas entre tinieblas tiene piedad de ti. whose soul is in agreement with your own soul, and who, when you falter in the dark, will share your sorrows.17Forma dentro de ti un corazón de buen consejo; porque no hay para ti cosa de mayor precio. And establish a heart of good counsel within yourself. For there is nothing of greater usefulness to you than this.18El alma de un varón piadoso descubre algunas veces la verdad, mejor que siete centinelas apostados en un lugar alto para atalayar. At any time, the soul of a holy man declares more truths than seven vigilant watchmen sitting in a high place.19Mas sobre todo has de rogar al Altísimo, que enderece tus pasos en la verdad. But concerning all things, pray to the Most High, so that he may direct your way in truth.20Preceda a todas tus obras la palabra veraz, y un consejo firme a todas tus acciones. In all your works, let a true word precede you, with steadfast counsel before every deed.21Una palabra mala altera el corazón; del cual nacen estas cuatro cosas: el bien y el mal, la vida y la muerte, cosas que constantemente están en poder de la lengua. Hay hombre que es hábil para instruir a muchos, y para su alma no vale nada. A wicked word can change the heart. From the heart four kinds of things arise: good and evil, life and death. And the tongue is continually their ruler. There is a man who is an astute teacher of many, and yet this is useless to his own soul.22Otro es prudente e instruye a muchos, y sirve de consuelo a su propia alma. A man of experience has taught many, and this is pleasant to his own soul.23El que discurre con sofisterías, se hace odioso; quedará defraudado en todas las cosas. Whoever speaks mere rhetoric is hateful; he will be deceived in every matter.24No le ha dado el Señor gracia; porque carece de todo saber. Grace is not given to him from the Lord. For he has been deprived of all wisdom.25Aquel es sabio, que es sabio para su alma; y son loables los frutos de su prudencia. There is a wise man who is wise within his own soul, and the fruit of his understanding is praiseworthy.26El hombre sabio instruye a su pueblo, y los frutos de su prudencia son fieles. A wise man instructs his own people, and the fruit of his understanding is faithful.27Colmado será de bendiciones el varón sabio, y alabado de cuantos le conozcan. A wise man will be filled with blessings, and those who see will praise him.28La vida del hombre se reduce a cierto número de días; mas los días de Israel son innumerables. The life of a man is in the number of his days. But the days of Israel are innumerable.29El sabio continuará en ser honrado del pueblo, y su nombre vivirá eternamente. A wise man will inherit honor among the people, and his name will live in eternity.30Hijo, durante tu vida examina tu alma; y si es mal inclinada, no le des libertad; Son, test your own mind in your life, and if it is lacking, you should not give it authority.31porque no todas las cosas son útiles a todos; ni todos se complacen en unas mismas cosas. For not all things are fitting for all persons, and not every kind of thing is agreeable to every soul.32Guárdate de ser glotón en los convites, ni te abalances a todos los platos; Do not choose to be eager during any feast, and you should not act with excess toward any food.33porque ocasiona enfermedades el mucho comer, y la glotonería viene a parar en cólicos. For in excessive eating there will be infirmity, and gluttony will continue even unto illness.34La intemperancia ha muerto muchos; mas el hombre sobrio alargará la vida. By excessive drinking, many have passed away. But he who abstains will add to his life.
