1Una molestia grande es innata a todos los hombres; y un pesado yugo abruma a los hijos de Adán, desde el día que salen del vientre materno, hasta el día de su entierro en el seno de la común madre. A great occupation was created for all men, and a heavy yoke is upon the sons of Adam, from the day of their departure from their mother’s womb, even until the day of their burial into the mother of all:2Están con cuidados y sobresaltos de su corazón, en aprensión de lo que aguardan, y del día de la muerte. their thoughts, and the fears of their heart, their imagined expectations, and the day of their end,3Desde el que está sentado sobre un glorioso trono hasta el que yace por tierra, y sobre la ceniza; from him who sits upon a glorious throne, even to him who is humbled in earth and ashes,4desde el que viste jacinto, y trae corona hasta el que se cubre de lienzo crudo, hay saña, celos, alborotos, zozobras y temor de muerte, rencor obstinado y contiendas. from him who wears hyacinth and bears a crown, even to him who is covered with rough linen: wrath, envy, tumult, restlessness, and the fear of death, continual anger and contention.5Aun al tiempo de reposar en su lecho, perturba su imaginación el sueño de la noche. And in the time of rest upon his bed, the sleep of the night changes his knowledge.6Breve o casi ninguno es su reposo, y aun en el mismo sueño esta como en día de centinela, There is little or no rest, and sleep is taken from him, as if on a day of keeping watch.7y turbado por las visiones de su espíritu, y como quien echa a huir al tiempo de la batalla. Mas cuando despierta, y se ve salvo, se admira de su vano temor. He is disturbed by a vision of his heart, as if he had escaped in a day of warfare. In the time of his salvation, he rose up and wondered that there was no fear.8Esto sucede en todo viviente, desde el hombre hasta la bestia; mas en los pecadores siete veces peor. This is so with all flesh, from man even to cattle, but upon sinners it is seven times as great.9Además de esto, la muerte, el derramamiento de sangre, las contiendas, la espada, las opresiones, el hambre, las ruinas y los azotes. Add to this: death, bloodshed, contention, and the spear, oppression, famine, and affliction, and scourges.10Todas estas cosas fueron destinadas para los impíos; y por causa de ellos vino el diluvio. All these things have been created because of iniquity, and it is due to iniquity that the great flood was made.11Todo cuanto de la tierra viene, en tierra se convertirá; así como todas las aguas vuelven al mar. All things that are of the earth shall return to the earth, and all waters shall return to the sea.12Todas las dádivas y las injusticias se acabarán; pero la rectitud subsistirá para siempre. All bribery and iniquity will be wiped away, but faith shall stand forever.13Se secarán como un torrente las riquezas de los injustos, y harán ruido a manera de un gran trueno, en medio de un aguacero. The substance of the unjust will dry up like a river, and will pass away with a noise like loud thunder in a rainstorm.14Al abrir su mano (el injusto) se alegrará; mas al fin los prevaricadores pararán en humo. When he opens his hands, he will rejoice. So will transgressors pass away at the consummation.15No multiplicarán sus ramos los nietos de los impíos; harán solamente ruido como raíces viciadas, que están sobre la punta de un risco. The descendants of the impious will not produce many branches, for they may be compared to dirty roots at the edge of a rock.16Duran como la verdura que se cría en sitio húmedo, y a las orillas de un río, la cual es arrancada antes que toda otra yerba. The weeds, which grow above every water and beside the banks of the river, will be uprooted before all the grass.17La beneficencia es como un jardín amenísimo, y la misericordia jamás perece. Grace is like a paradise of blessings, and mercy continues for eternity.18Dulce será la vida del operario que está contento con su suerte, y halla en ella un tesoro. The life of a worker, when content with what is sufficient, will become sweet, and in it you will find a treasure.19Dan un nombre duradero los hijos, y la fundación de una ciudad; mas será preferida a estas cosas una mujer irreprensible. Sons, and the building of a city, will establish a name, but an immaculate wife will be ranked above these things.20El vino y la música, alegran el corazón, pero más que ambas cosas el amor de la sabiduría. Wine and music rejoice the heart, but the love of wisdom is above them both.21La flauta y el salterio, causan dulce melodía, mas la lengua suave, es superior a entrambas cosas. The flute and the psaltery make a sweet melody, but a pleasant word is above them both.22La gentileza y la hermosura, recrean tu vista; pero más que todo eso, los verdes sembrados. Your eye desires elegance and beauty, but verdant fields are above these things.23El amigo y el compañero se ayudan mutuamente a su tiempo, pero más que ambos la mujer y su marido. A friend and a companion meet one another in time, but above them both is a wife with her husband.24Los hermanos sirven de gran socorro en tiempo de la aflicción; pero la misericordia salva mejor que estos. Brothers are a help in time of tribulation, but mercy will liberate, more so than they will.25Oro y plata mantienen al hombre en pie, pero más que ambas cosas agrada un buen consejo. Gold and silver provide a firm position for the feet, but well-spoken counsel is above them both.26Engrandecen el corazón las riquezas y el valor, pero más que estas cosas, el temor del Señor. Ability and strength lift up the heart, but the fear of the Lord is above these things.27Al que tiene el temor del Señor, nada le falta, y con él no hay necesidad de otro auxilio. There is no loss in the fear of the Lord, and it has no need to ask for assistance.28Es el temor del Señor como un jardín amenísimo; cubierto está de gloria, superior a todas las glorias. The fear of the Lord is like a paradise of blessings, and they have covered it above all glory.29Hijo, no andes mendigando durante tu vida; que más vale morir que mendigar. Son, in your lifetime you should not be indigent, for it is better to die than to be destitute.30El hombre que se atiene a mesa ajena, no piensa jamás cómo ganar su sustento; porque se alimenta de las viandas de otro. The life of him who looks to another man’s table should not be thought of as a way of life. For he feeds his life with another man’s food.31Pero un hombre bien educado y cuerdo se guardará de hacer esto. But a disciplined and well-taught man will take care of himself.32En la boca del insensato será suave el mendigar, mas en su vientre arderá el fuego. Scarcity will seem sweet to the mouth of the imprudent, but a fire will burn in his belly.
