¹¡Oh muerte, cuan amarga es tu memoria para un hombre que vive en paz, en medio de sus riquezas! O death, how bitter is the memory of you: to a man who has peace in his substance,²¡Para un hombre tranquilo, y a quien todo le sale a medida de sus deseos, y que aún puede disfrutar de los manjares! to a quiet man, and to him whose ways are directed properly in all things, and who still has the strength to take nourishment.³¡Oh muerte! tu sentencia es dulce al hombre necesitado y falto de fuerzas, O death, your judgment is good to the indigent man, and to him whose strength has diminished,⁴al de una edad ya decrépita, que está lleno de cuidados, al que se halla sin esperanza y sin paciencia. who is failing due to old age, and who is anxious about all things, and to the unbelieving man who has lost patience.⁵No temas la sentencia de la muerte. Acuérdate de lo que fue antes de ti, y de lo que ha de venir después de ti. Esta es la sentencia del Señor sobre toda carne. Do not choose to dread the judgment of death. Remember the things that occurred before you, and the things that will occur after you. This judgment is from the Lord upon all flesh.⁶¿Y qué otra cosa te sobrevendrá, sino lo que fuere del agrado del Altísimo, sean diez, o ciento, o mil tus años? And what will happen to you is well-pleasing to the Most High, whether in ten, or one hundred, or one thousand years.⁷No se pide cuenta en el otro mundo de lo que uno ha vivido. For death is no indictment of life.⁸Hijos abominables se hacen los hijos de los pecadores, y los que frecuentan las casas de los impíos. The sons of sinners, and those who pass their time in the manner of the houses of the impious, become sons of abominations.⁹Perecerá la herencia de los hijos de los pecadores, y acompañará siempre el oprobio a sus descendientes. The inheritance of the sons of sinners will perish, and continual disgrace will be with their offspring.¹⁰Quéjanse de su padre los hijos del impío, viendo que por culpa de él viven deshonrados. The sons of an impious father will complain, for they are in disgrace because of him.¹¹¡Ay de vosotros, hombres impíos que abandonasteis la Ley del Señor altísimo! Woe to you, impious men, who have abandoned the law of the Most High Lord!¹²Cuando nacisteis, en la maldición nacisteis; y cuando muriereis, la maldición será vuestra herencia. And when you are born, you will be born into a curse; and when you die, your portion will be in a curse.¹³Todo aquello que de la tierra procede, en tierra se convertirá; así los impíos pasarán de la maldición a la perdición. All things that are from the earth shall return to the earth. Similarly, the impious will proceed from a curse unto perdition.¹⁴Los hombres harán duelo sobre sus cadáveres; mas el nombre de los impíos será raído. The grieving of men is in their body, but the name of the impious will be wiped away.¹⁵Ten cuidado de tu buena reputación; porque esa será tuya más establemente que mil grandes y preciosos tesoros. Have concern for your good name. For this will continue with you, more so than a thousand precious and great treasures.¹⁶La buena vida se cuenta por días, pero el buen nombre permanecerá para siempre. A good life has its number of days, but a good name will continue forever.¹⁷Hijos, conservad en la paz mi enseñanza. Pues la sabiduría escondida, y un tesoro enterrado, ¿qué utilidad acarrean? Sons, practice discipline peacefully. For what use is there in either concealed wisdom, or undiscovered treasure?¹⁸Más digno de estima es el hombre que oculta su ignorancia, que el hombre que oculta su sabiduría. Better is the man who hides his foolishness than the man who hides his wisdom.¹⁹Tened, pues, rubor de lo que voy a deciros: Yet truly, have respect for these things which proceed from my mouth.²⁰que no de todo es bueno avergonzarse; ni todas las cosas bien hechas agradan a todos. For it is not good to observe every reverence. And all things do not please all persons in their beliefs.²¹Avergonzaos de la deshonestidad delante del padre y de la madre; y de la mentira delante del que gobierna, o del hombre poderoso; Have shame of these things: of fornication before father and mother, and of a lie before the first leader and the powerful,²²de un delito ante el príncipe y el juez; del crimen delante de la asamblea, y delante del pueblo; of a crime before a ruler or a judge, of iniquity before a congregation or a people,²³de la injusticia delante del compañero y del amigo, en el lugar donde mores; of injustice before a companion or a friend, and of the place in which you live,²⁴del robo, a causa de la verdad y alianza; de comer con los codos encima del pan, y de embrollar el libro de cargo y data; of theft, and of the truth before God, and of the covenant, of reclining to eat bread, and of deceitfulness in giving or receiving,²⁵de no responder a los que te saludan; de fijar tus ojos sobre la mujer fornicaria; y de torcer tu rostro por no ver al pariente. of silence before those who greet you, of looking upon a woman of fornication, and of averting your face from a relative.²⁶No vuelvas al otro lado tu cara para no mirar a tu prójimo. Avergüénzate de defraudar una parte, y de no restituirla. You should not avert your face from your neighbor, nor should you take away a portion and not restore it.²⁷No pongas tus ojos en la mujer de otro, ni solicites a su criada; no te arrimes a su lecho. You should not stare at another man’s wife, nor pursue his handmaid, nor approach her bed.²⁸Con los amigos guárdate de palabras injuriosas; y si has dado algo, no lo eches en cara. Avoid reproachful speeches before friends, and when you give, you should not place blame.
