1Se levantó Elías, profeta semejante al fuego; y sus palabras eran como ardientes teas. And the prophet Elijah arose like a fire, and his word burned like a torch.2Hizo venir sobre ellos el hambre, y fueron reducidos a un corto número los que por envidia le perseguían, porque no podían sufrir los preceptos del Señor. He brought a famine upon them, and those who provoked him in their envy became few. For they could not bear the precepts of the Lord.3Con la palabra del Señor cerró el cielo, del cual por tres veces hizo bajar fuego. By the word of the Lord, he closed the heavens, and he brought down fire from heaven three times.4Así Elías se hizo célebre por sus milagros; ¿Quién ha alcanzado tanta gloria como tú? In this way, Elijah was magnified in his wondrous works. So who can say that he is similar to you in glory?5Tú en virtud de la palabra del Señor Dios, sacaste del sepulcro a un difunto, arrancándoselo a la muerte. He raised up a dead man from the grave, from the fate of death, by the word of the Lord God.6Tú arrojaste los reyes a la perdición, quebrantaste sin trabajo su poderío, y en medio de su gloria los trasladaste del lecho. He threw down kings unto perdition, and he easily shattered their power and boasting from his bed.7Tú oíste en el Sinaí el juicio del Señor, y en el Horeb los decretos de la venganza. He heeded the judgment at Sinai, and the judgments of punishment at Horeb.8Tú ungiste reyes para que castigasen, y dejaste profetas sucesores tuyos. He anointed kings unto repentance, and he chose the prophets who would follow after him.9Tú fuiste arrebatado en un torbellino de fuego sobre una carroza tirada de caballos de fuego. He was received into a whirlwind of fire, into a swift chariot with fiery horses.10Tú estás escrito en los decretos de los tiempos, para aplacar el enojo del Señor, reconciliar el corazón de los padres con los hijos, y restablecer las tribus de Jacob. He is written in the judgments of the times, so as to lessen the wrath of the Lord, to reconcile the heart of the father to the son, and to restore the tribes of Jacob.11Dichosos los que te vieron y fueron honrados con tu amistad. Blessed are those who saw you, and who were adorned with your friendship.12Porque nosotros vivimos solo esta vida; mas después de la muerte no será nuestro nombre como el tuyo. For we live only in our life, and after death, our name will not be the same.13En fin, Elías, fue encubierto por el torbellino, y quedó en Eliseo la plenitud de su espíritu; que mientras vivió no temió a príncipe alguno, ni nadie fue más poderoso que él. Certainly, Elijah was covered by the whirlwind, and his spirit was completed in Elisha. In his days, he was not fearful of the ruler, and no power defeated him.14No le dobló cosa de este mundo; y aun después de muerto profetizó su cuerpo. No word overwhelmed him, and after death, his body prophesied.15Durante su vida obró prodigios, y en su muerte hizo cosas admirables. In his life, he gave great portents, and in death, he wrought miracles.16Mas ni con todas estas cosas se arrepintió el pueblo; ni se apartaron de sus pecados hasta que fueron arrojados de su país y dispersados por toda la tierra, In all these things, the people did not repent, and they did not withdraw from their sins, even until they were cast out of their land, and were dispersed throughout all the earth.17y quedó poquísima gente, y a la casa de David un príncipe. And there was left behind a people very few in number, but with a leader in the house of David.18Algunos de estos hicieron lo que era del agrado de Dios; otros, empero, cometieron muchos pecados. Some of these did what pleased God. But others committed many sins.19Ezequías fortificó su ciudad, y condujo el agua al centro de ella; excavó a fuerza del hierro la peña, e hizo en ella una cisterna para el agua. Hezekiah fortified his city, and he brought water into its midst, and he dug into rock with iron, and he built a well for water.20En su tiempo vino Senaquerib, y envió delante a Rabsacés; el cual levantó su mano contra los judíos, y amenazó con ella a Sión, ensoberbecido de sus fuerzas. In his days, Sennacherib rose up, and he sent Rabshakeh, and he lifted up his hand against them, and he extended his hand against Zion, and he became arrogant in his power.21Entonces se estremecieron sus corazones y sus manos, y sintieron dolores como de mujer que está de parto. Then their hearts and hands shook. And they were in pain, like women giving birth.22Pero invocaron al Señor misericordioso, y extendiendo sus manos las levantaron al cielo, y el Señor Dios santo oyó luego sus voces. And they called upon the merciful Lord. And they spread their hands and lifted them up to heaven. And the holy Lord God quickly heeded their voice.23No se acordó más de sus pecados, ni los entregó en poder de sus enemigos, sino que los purificó por mano del santo profeta Isaías. He was not mindful of their sins, and he did not give them over to their enemies. Instead, he purified them by the hand of Isaiah, the holy prophet.24Disipó el campamento de los asirios, y el Ángel del Señor los exterminó, He threw down the army of the Assyrians, and the Angel of the Lord crushed them.25porque Ezequías hizo lo que agradó a Dios, y siguió con firmeza las sendas de David su padre. Así se lo había recomendado Isaías, profeta grande y fiel delante del Señor. For Hezekiah did what pleased God, and he went with fortitude in the way of David his father, just as he had been commanded by Isaiah, a prophet great and faithful in the sight of God.26En su tiempo volvió atrás el sol, y él prolongó su vida al rey. In his days, the sun went backwards, and he added to the king’s life.27Vio con su grande espíritu los últimos tiempos, y consoló a los que lloraban en Sión. With a great spirit he saw the final things. And he consoled the mourners in Zion.28Anunció las cosas que han de suceder hasta el fin de los tiempos, y las ocultas, antes que aconteciesen. He revealed the future, even the distant future, and hidden things before they occurred.
